I got this to listen with my kids, and I think I ended up enjoying it more than they did! What a fun, silly, tangential romp of a story. Narrator was excellent and I'm thoroughly glad I listened!

It seems every February I end up reading a witchy story. I fully enjoyed this one! Definitely a cast of characters I want to continue spending time with. The narrator is fabulous, her accent work is impressive, and now I want to listen to more Irish narrators!

This was the first Audible pick to listen with my kiddos and we enjoyed it! It was great for listening in the car on the way to sports practices. They grumbled a bit at first, but didn't make a peep once it was playing. What a charming story! Narration was top notch.

Not a bad listen
Revisado: 02-04-25
I enjoyed the narration and the author did convey well the infuriating experience of free blacks and women of the time. Unfortunately, she tied it all up with a trite little bow at the end, which just felt a bit clunky and lazy. I'm glad I listened, but it's not one I'll jump to recommend. The narrator has a beautiful smooth tone and did well to differentiate characters, so she gets higher marks.

Historia
Isa de Smit was raised in the vibrant, glittering world of her parents' small art gallery in Amsterdam, a hub of beauty, creativity, and expression, until the Nazi occupation wiped the color from her city's palette. The "degenerate" art of the Gallery de Smit is confiscated, the artists in hiding or deported, her best friend, Truus, fled to join the shadowy Dutch resistance. And masterpiece by masterpiece, the Nazis are buying and stealing her country's heritage. So when the unpaid taxes threaten her beloved but empty gallery, Isa decides to make the Nazis pay.

A beautiful listen
Revisado: 09-22-24
My first foray with Ms. Cameron and I think I'll definitely check her other works. The style was lovely and her use of color throughout was a beautiful touch. I was invested in each character. I'm already a fan of Saskia Maarleveld as a narrator so I knew what I was in for there. If she's reading it, I'm likely to enjoy it. Thank you to the author for giving me a peak behind the curtain of the Dutch resistance and art forgery.

Historia
In 1893, there's no such thing as witches. There used to be, in the wild, dark days before the burnings began, but now witching is nothing but tidy charms and nursery rhymes. If the modern woman wants any measure of power, she must find it at the ballot box. But when the Eastwood sisters - James Juniper, Agnes Amaranth, and Beatrice Belladonna - join the suffragists of New Salem, they begin to pursue the forgotten words and ways that might turn the women's movement into the witch's movement.

After eight years on the stage with The Company of Fiends, the glow of the spotlight is starting to wear thin for Hazel Nix. The theater is perfect for a girl like her—one with a secret she keeps even from her more monstrous peers—but playing pretend is only exciting for so long. After so many lovers, on stage and otherwise, Hazel has yet to make a lasting connection with anyone and considers taking her last bow at the company.

Another hot romp
Revisado: 03-06-24
Enjoyed getting back to Ms. Moon's world of sexy monsters. This one was definitely lighter on plot than the first go-round. Battle with the villain very short lived and easy to overcome. Would've liked more back story on the bad guy. And it seems every protagonist needs exactly 5 lovers. But I can't really be too bothered by it. Sex was still great, characters loveable, and super fun to listen to. This narrator is a champ. I may not rush to the 3rd installment, but I'm sure I'll get there eventually 😉

Another historical heroine brought back to life by Ms. Chiaverini. Not as gripping as some of her other books, but still a good read. Narrator was fine, but I probably wouldn't seek her out again.
