Fact based and interesting
Revisado: 11-13-24
There are a lot of facts and insights that you won’t get in school. The discussion of little remembered and less understood figures was enlightening.

Historia
John Plaster’s riveting account of his covert activities as a member of a special operations team during the Vietnam War is “a true insider’s account...this eye-opening report will leave readers feeling as if they’ve been given a hot scoop on a highly classified project” (Publishers Weekly). Code-named the Studies and Observations Group, SOG was the most secret elite US military unit to serve in the Vietnam War - so secret that its very existence was denied by the government.

Historia
Three hours into her new job, Blake Larsen stumbles across her first body. But this is no ordinary murder. The scene is elaborately staged, with the victim's head clinically severed from her shoulders. Blake is certain this isn't the killer's first time. Then, a second woman goes missing, a beautiful young Army wife named Nina Crawford. When the kidnappers—claiming to be ISIS—release a horrific videoed ransom demand threatening to livestream her execution, the attention of the entire country turns to Northern Pines. And a countdown begins. Nina has 48 hours to live.

Historia
The sinking of the German battleship Bismarck - a masterpiece of engineering, well-armored with a main artillery of eight 15-inch guns - was one of the most dramatic events of World War II. She left the port of Gotenhafen for her first operation on the night of 18 May 1941, yet was almost immediately discovered by Norwegian resistance and Allied air reconnaissance. British battlecruiser Hood was quickly dispatched from Scapa Flow to intercept the Bismarck, together with new battleship Prince of Wales.

Great history held back by narration
Revisado: 12-27-23
The facts and story are great. The details on what the leaders and crews were thinking and seeing are excellent. Still, the narrator was bland, mispronounced several words and place names, and was nearly monotonous with the delivery. Too bad it took away from an otherwise excellent book

Historia
The year is 1680, in the heart of the Golden Age of Piracy, and more than 300 daring, hardened pirates—a potent mix of low-life scallywags and a rare breed of gentlemen buccaneers—gather on a remote Caribbean island. The plan: to wreak havoc on the Pacific coastline, raiding cities, mines, and merchant ships. The booty: the bright gleam of Spanish gold and the chance to become a legend. So begins one of the greatest piratical adventures of the era—a story not given its full due until now.

Great story of neglected history
Revisado: 01-30-23
Although the book started off slowly and spent a lot of time on the first adventure it paid off by setting up later stories. The people came to life and there are numerous nuggets of surprising information about the impact these pirates had on the world. I was especially surprised by the naturalist notes and the use of actual pirate records. I can’t wait for a sequel about the period from 1700 on!

Historia
Its code name was “Operation Gold”, a wildly audacious CIA plan to construct a clandestine tunnel into East Berlin to tap into critical KGB and Soviet military telecommunication lines. The tunnel, crossing the border between the American and Soviet sectors, would have to be 1,500 feet (the length of the Empire State Building) with state-of-the-art equipment, built and operated literally under the feet of their Cold War adversaries.

Excellent story of Cold War espionage
Revisado: 12-26-22
Although the story seems to try and make the traitor George Blake a sympathetic person, the fact is he was a traitor. This is a good story and overview of early Cold War treachery culminating in the betrayal of both programs and people as well as countries

Our world has ended five times: It has been broiled, frozen, poison gassed, smothered, and pelted by asteroids. In The Ends of the World, Peter Brannen dives into deep time, exploring Earth's past dead ends, and in the process offers us a glimpse of our possible future. Many scientists now believe that the climate shifts of the 21st century have analogs in these five extinctions.

Melodramatic narration
Revisado: 04-03-19
Although the book has interesting facts and is probably a good read, the audiobook is hard to listen to. The narrator tries too hard to make virtually every sentence dramatic. The end result is a near breathless melodramatic narration that just drives the listener crazy. Because of this the tendency is to make the listener think OMG the world is about to end and it is all my fault! Stop, just stop trying to be dramatic. Please.
