Historia
One of the 20th century's enduring works, One Hundred Years of Solitude is a widely beloved and acclaimed novel known throughout the world and the ultimate achievement in a Nobel Prize-winning career. The novel tells the story of the rise and fall of the mythical town of Macondo through the history of the Buendía family. Rich and brilliant, it is a chronicle of life, death, and the tragicomedy of humankind. In the beautiful, ridiculous, and tawdry story of the Buendía family, one sees all of humanity, just as in the history, myths, growth, and decay of Macondo, one sees all of Latin America.

Historia
First published in 1873, The Gilded Age is both a biting satire and a revealing portrait of post-Civil War America - an age of corruption when crooked land speculators, ruthless bankers, and dishonest politicians voraciously took advantage of the nation's peacetime optimism. With his characteristic wit and perception, Mark Twain and his collaborator, Charles Dudley Warner, attack the greed, lust, and naiveté of their own time in a work that endures as a valuable social document and one of America's most important satirical novels.

Very enjoyable book. I love Twain and this collaboration is entertaining and funny. I am astonished that it’s never been made into a movie. Great characters and storylines. The narration is superb.

Historia
After Tova Sullivan’s husband died, she began working the night shift at the Sowell Bay Aquarium, mopping floors and tidying up. Keeping busy has always helped her cope, which she’s been doing since her eighteen-year-old son, Erik, mysteriously vanished on a boat in Puget Sound over thirty years ago. Tova becomes acquainted with curmudgeonly Marcellus, a giant Pacific octopus living at the aquarium. Marcellus knows more than anyone can imagine but wouldn’t dream of lifting one of his eight arms for his human captors—until he forms a remarkable friendship with Tova.

Historia
"Dr. Livingstone, I presume?" So goes the signature introduction of New York Herald star journalist Henry Morton Stanley to renowned explorer Dr. David Livingstone, who had been missing for six years in the wilds of Africa. Into Africa ushers us into the meeting of these remarkable men. In 1866, when Livingstone journeyed into the heart of the African continent in search of the Nile's source, the land was rough, unknown to Europeans, and inhabited by man-eating tribes.

Very disappointing.
Revisado: 07-07-23
After reading London and Sarum by Rutherford, I was really excited to read New York. My expectation was that he would start at the very beginning (as he did with London) with, say, the indigenous people and work his way through time. He did not. He started with the Dutch. Then, although the title of the book is New York, referring to NYC, it really is not. It is the story of Manhattan. New York City is comprised of 5 boroughs and they each share in NY's rich history. Speaking of rich, the story starts out with a variety of diverse characters - which is fitting for a city such as New York that has always been a rich tapestry of cultures. But, eventually he seems to poop out and ends up with story focused on NY "blue bloods." I think he forgot he was not in London anymore. It became trite and formulaic. The narrator seemed to give up, too. As we near the final third of the book, his accents were terrible and, slightly insulting. As I say, I was very disappointed.

Loved the writing, not sure about narrator or story
Revisado: 08-04-20
I am loving my return to classics. This one though.........? Tolstoy is a phenomenal writer who can mine, examine, and describe the innermost thoughts and emotions of a person like no other. I enjoyed another look at the lives of the Russian aristocracy. But, it’s an odd, diverging narrative with series of flawed characters. I’d recommend for a great book club read. Dense and chewy for discussion. Narrator was okay. I was annoyed by her flat accent and a couple of mispronunciations.

Historia
The mutiny on HMS Bounty, in the South Pacific on 28 April 1789, is one of history's truly great stories - a tale of human drama, intrigue and adventure of the highest order - and in the hands of Peter FitzSimons it comes to life as never before. Commissioned by the Royal Navy to collect breadfruit plants from Tahiti and take them to the West Indies, the Bounty's crew found themselves in a tropical paradise. Five months later, they did not want to leave.

Historia
"Call me Ishmael." Thus starts the greatest American novel. Melville said himself that he wanted to write "a mighty book about a mighty theme" and so he did. It is a story of one man's obsessive revenge-journey against the white whale, Moby-Dick, who injured him in an earlier meeting. Woven into the story of the last journey of The Pequod is a mesh of philosophy, rumination, religion, history, and a mass of information about whaling through the ages.
