Historia
In 1941, with London burning in the Blitz, a group of hedonistic English nobles partied shamelessly in Kenya. Far removed from falling bombs, the wealthy elites of "Happy Valley" indulged in morphine, alcohol, and unrestricted sex, often with their friends' spouses. But the party turned sinister in the early hours of a January morning for Josslyn Hay, Lord Erroll, who had been enjoying the favors of the beautiful young wife of a middle-aged neighbor. Hay was found dead, a bullet in his brain.

Sooooo boring!
Revisado: 05-27-24
I can’t believe I listened to this all the way to the end. First of all, the narrator droned monotonously, never showing a hint of interest in the topic. (Apparently he was as bored as I). Furthermore, the people chronicled were a bunch of upper class wastrels with a juicy murder thrown in for good measure. Yet this author managed to reduce what should have been a sure-fire page turner into unremitting dullness. One of the worst books I have ever listened to. Don’t waste your time!

Historia
Alex Morrow is not new to the police force - or to crime - but there is nothing familiar about the call she has just received. On a still night in a quiet suburb of Glasgow, Scotland, three armed men have slipped into a house, demanding a man who is not, and has never been, inside the front door. In the confusion that ensues, one family member is shot and another kidnapped, the assailants demanding an impossible ransom. Is this the amateur crime gone horribly wrong that it seems, or something much more unexpected?

WHAT????
Revisado: 01-07-24
This novel is indescribable. Was it a police procedural? A detective story? A multi-character psychological exploration? Who knows. Apparently not the author. This was a complete mish-mash of genres and fragments of plots that never came to any kind of resolution. One of the worst books I have ever listened to. To top things off, the narrator spoke in an unrelenting monotone that made it almost impossible to stay awake. Do not choose this title!

Set my teeth on edge!
Revisado: 08-23-23
Boy, did the narrator do an injustice to this novel! The story is suspenseful and well-plotted, the characters quite well developed. Overall, this should have been a really enjoyable listen. But the narrator completely spoiled it. The main male characters are either Israeli or Arab and they are all voiced with incredibly annoying -- and uniformly menacing -- accents. Not only was this tiresome and unpleasant but it was difficult to distinguish who was speaking to whom. Even worse, the way the female protagonist is voiced makes her sound both shrill and slightly inane -- not at all the way she was written. I will never listen to another book read by this narrator.

Historia
Anna Hart is a seasoned missing persons detective in San Francisco with far too much knowledge of the darkest side of human nature. When tragedy strikes her personal life, Anna, desperate and numb, flees to the Northern California village of Mendocino to grieve. She lived there as a child with her beloved foster parents, and now she believes it might be the only place left for her. Yet the day she arrives, she learns that a local teenage girl has gone missing.

Very disappointing
Revisado: 03-14-23
It hardly seems possible that the author of The Paris Wife and Circling the Sun -- two excellent books -- could have produced this painfully disjointed novel. The plot, such as it was, meandered hither and yon and most often seemed to be merely an excuse for a lecture on the horrors of child abuse, abduction, and the psychosis of child molesters and abductors. There was zero character development. Rather the characters served simply as a means to convey all the author's insights on the topics listed above. These are all important and worthy topics but the heavy-handed method of conveying the information made for a ludicrous story and a thoroughly unpleasant reading experience.

Historia
In this award-winning Audible Studios production, Trevor Noah tells his wild coming-of-age tale during the twilight of apartheid in South Africa. It’s a story that begins with his mother throwing him from a moving van to save him from a potentially fatal dispute with gangsters, then follows the budding comedian’s path to self-discovery through episodes both poignant and comical.

An important story for our times
Revisado: 06-24-20
Trevor Noah has written a tour de force! He relates what is often a heartrending account of growing up in apartheid (and post-apartheid) South Africa and still manages to find (a lot of) humor in the insanity of racial categorization. This book will make you cry AND laugh -- sometimes at the same time. Noah is a master story teller with an important message. This is a perfect book for a family to listen to together. Highly recommended!!

When Wynn and Jack decide to canoe the Maskwa River in Northern Canada, they anticipate long days of leisurely paddling and picking blueberries and nights of stargazing and reading paperback Westerns. But a wildfire making its way across the forest adds unexpected urgency to the journey. When they hear a man and woman arguing on the fog-shrouded riverbank and decide to warn them about the fire, their search for the pair turns up nothing and no one. But: The next day, a man appears on the river, paddling alone. Is this the man they heard? And, if he is, where is the woman?

Historia
Littleport, Maine, has always felt like two separate towns: an ideal vacation enclave for the wealthy, whose summer homes line the coastline, and a simple harbor community for the year-round residents whose livelihoods rely on service to the visitors. Typically, fierce friendships never develop between a local and a summer girl - but that’s just what happens with visitor Avery Greer and Littleport resident Sadie Loman. Each summer for almost a decade, the girls are inseparable - until Sadie is found dead.

Historia
When a woman unexpectedly loses her lifelong best friend and mentor, she finds herself burdened with the unwanted dog he has left behind. Her own battle against grief is intensified by the mute suffering of the dog, a huge Great Dane traumatized by the inexplicable disappearance of its master, and by the threat of eviction: Dogs are prohibited in her apartment building. While others worry that grief has made her a victim of magical thinking, the woman refuses to be separated from the dog except for brief periods of time.

Worst book ever!
Revisado: 05-25-19
This strains my faith in National Book Award winners. Rather than a novel, it is more a meditation on loss, which could be quite moving if it were stripped of the (seemingly) hundreds of references to thoughts on the subject by (apparently) brilliant but arcane writers -- favorites of the narrator if unknown to me. The result is tediious and pretentious, a "novel" that only an English or philosophy professor could love.

Celeste Ng is a brilliant novelist. She writes with incredible grace and empathy about about families and especially about young people. This book embraces its characters with all the flaws that make us human. PLUS this is a riveting read with great suspense. The narrator is also marvelous. Don’t miss this outstanding book.

Historia
A single mother turns up dead at the bottom of the river that runs through town. Earlier in the summer, a vulnerable teenage girl met the same fate. They are not the first women lost to these dark waters, but their deaths disturb the river and its history, dredging up secrets long submerged. Left behind is a lonely 15-year-old girl. Parentless and friendless, she now finds herself in the care of her mother's sister, a fearful stranger who has been dragged back to the place she deliberately ran from - a place to which she vowed she'd never return.

A bridge too far.
Revisado: 11-25-17
After reading the marvelous Girl On a Train, I had high expectations for Hawkins’ next outing. But this plot has too many weird turnings. And it just left me feeling oddly creepy throughout — not in a good way. Can’t say more without being a spoiler. But I don’t recommend this title. ( however, the narrators were excellent, the one saving grace).
