Historia
For his whole life, Thordric has been told that his magic is dangerous, and that he must never use it. All over Dinia, half-wizards are treated the same, their magic labelled as dangerous and uncontrollable. But when High Wizard Kalljard dies under mysterious circumstances, it falls to young Thordric to solve the case. The only trouble? The deed was done by magic, and though Thordric is a half-wizard, he has never fully used his powers. To prove himself right and find the person responsible, Thordric has to learn how to control his own powers.

A great way to open a series
Revisado: 09-01-19
I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.
I'll try to write my review without giving spoilers.
The first thing that the book shows you is that the world has a type of racism problem. Mainly it's views on wizards and half-wizards. These problems go as far as they can go in our own world and I would even say that some people in our own world might react to people of a certain race the way that the people in this world react to half-wizards.
I liked the story, how it was written, the line that it followed. There is one part that I'm not exactly sure of, namely how the person knew what to teach the main character (that's the best I can do without spoiling things), because to me it seemed like a macguffin that they just happened to know what to teach for the main character to be able to solve the case.
I thought that the ending was just a little bit too neat for my taste. But it may be that this ending improves in my opinion depending on where the rest of the series is taken.
Overall I really enjoyed listening to this audiobook and I was actually a bit sorry that it was only 4 hours and 40 minutes.

Historia
Scarlett has never left the tiny island where she and her beloved sister, Tella, live with their powerful - and cruel - father. Now Scarlett's father has arranged a marriage for her, and Scarlett thinks her dreams of seeing Caraval, the faraway once-a-year performance where the audience participates in the show, are over. But this year Scarlett's long-dreamt-of invitation finally arrives. With the help of a mysterious sailor, Tella whisks Scarlett away to the show. Only as soon as they arrive, Tella is kidnapped by Caraval's mastermind organizer, Legend.

A world of magic
Revisado: 11-21-18
When I got an audible subscription for my birthday I asked my friends for recommendations. One of my friends told me about this book and when I read the blurb I was sold. When I got around to listening to it, however, it started in a way that did not remind me of the blurb at all. There was constant talk of this Caraval and the set up was great. But there were times when I was listening to it that I thought that the main character Scarlett was almost whiny because she had heard these tales of Caraval from her grandmother and she was constantly going 'Is this it? I thought it would be so much more.' After a while that really started to bug me.
But I LOVE stories with multiple layers and getting to see those layers unravelled at the ending was extremely satisfying. I also really liked that though there was an epilogue that hinted at a next book, the story in itself was finished and you could read this by itself without reading the rest of the series. So often book one is just a set up to get you to read the rest of the series and then the other books have to be read as well and you don't get any kind of conclusion until the very end. And I really love that if you want, you can just read this story by itself and still be satisfied. I do know that at a later date I will re-read this book and marvel at all the different things going on that you only pick up on at a second or third read through.

Wow. Just wow. Where’s the next book?
Revisado: 11-01-18
I absolutely loved this book. I had forgotten that it was the first book in a series and when it became obvious that at least one more book would follow I became super excited where the story was going to go. It was rather obvious that the book would end with them going through the portal, and I had sort of hoped for a look at Earth at the end. Some of the bits were a bit... pedestrian or something? Like the schooldays which did not seem to add much, yet. Maybe in later novels the explanation of those spells will come in handy. But overall I loved the story and I cant wait to read the next.

What a disappointment
Revisado: 10-09-18
I was given this free review copy at my request and have voluntarily left this review.
When I saw this book and read the synopsis, I thought that this could be a very interesting book. What illumination was lost? How can Christian help?
And then I started listening. I took the book forever to get to a place where I felt like the story had really begun. To a point where if I hadn’t agreed to review the book I would have put it away. And then when the story got underway there was still very little steam to propel me forward and push me to get to its conclusion. I had to force myself to keep listening to the end, just hoping that it would be worth it.
What irked me the most, was the way that the author tried to create tension. There is nothing wrong with having tension for a little while by not giving information. It becomes problematic, however, when it is the sole means of tension building. When the information was finally given, I didn’t get a sense of new tension. Because it was, again just about missing information.
And then the way that everyone kept information from Christian simply because they were not the ones who were supposed to tell him. It just got really annoying.
And then the way that it was introduced in the book that it was only book 1, felt like I had just read an almost meaningless prologue.
I know for sure that I will not come back for book 2.

Historia
The circus arrives without warning. No announcements precede it. It is simply there, when yesterday it was not. Within the black-and-white striped canvas tents is an utterly unique experience full of breathtaking amazements. It is called Le Cirque des Rêves, and it is only open at night. But behind the scenes, a fierce competition is underway - a duel between two young magicians, Celia and Marco, who have been trained since childhood expressly for this purpose by their mercurial instructors.

To listen is to dream
Revisado: 09-10-18
I have the Night Circus in paper form, and now in audible form. Both versions allow me to dream away to a magical mystical place. I had never before heard the accents of the Burgess’ sisters or of Widget and Poppet. But thanks to this speaker they came alive more than ever.
