The author has a fantastic way of describing characters in an aching, poetic-yet-grounded way that I can't get enough of.

Also, the performance is brilliant. The narrator's ability to subtly adjust each character's voice is incredibly engaging.

I'm buying the next book RIGHT NOW! 😆

Novik explores both the hero archetype as well as the evil witch archetype in a hilarious and humanizing way while our characters fight for their lives. I loved it.

This story is brilliant and nuanced and heartbreaking and visceral. I won't sugar coat it, this book hurt to read. It was also thrilling and addictive and EXACTLY what I look for in fiction.

There were times when the plot thickened and circumstances got impossibly worse for our protagonists and I had to stop listening because I was so immersed, so deep in the characters that I was feeling it like MY life was the one falling apart. Like I was the one who couldn't take another fracture to the heart. I had to step away and collect myself and let my body know that we were safe, that our world wasn't ending, even if it seemed like it was for these characters.

Sometimes, I have trouble with sequels introducing new characters because I just want to get back to hearing about the characters I already know and love. Ellis does a masterful job of making her new characters so grounded and real and relatable that you are immediately pulled into their orbit. Nikola in particular was absolutely riveting.

In this series, Ellis makes a stylistic and thematic choice that absolutely blows me away every time I notice it. She weaves the fallibility of translation (particularly around nuanced cultural differences) into the narrative and mystery. Certain word choices that Ampersand (and his translation algorithm) makes give you one impression, and then as the story unfolds you begin to realize what he really means in the context of our culture, which creates a natural mystery and tension while adding gorgeous complexity to the story.

Thank you for all of the work and dedication and openness that has gone, and continues to go, into this series. You have my deepest gratitude and respect.

It's so good, you guys. it rides the wave of character-driven sci-fi so well, I couldn't stop listening. I wound up staying up into the wee hours just to finish it!

I've seen some people complain about the narrator's performance and I think she did an absolutely stellar job. She completely submerges you in the story with her dynamic narrating style, speeding up and talking frantically when characters are afraid, adding inflections where warranted. There were only three scenes in the entire story where I would have given her critique. on, and they were minor at that.

Her portrayal of Ampersand's voice is phenomenal and keeps you eerily aware of how alien he is. The whiny-ness that some complained of is literally just the narrator portraying a scared young adult accurately (to real life and the book) during the inciting incident.

I think my favorite thing about the book was how realistic the emotional responses felt. I think our author did a fantastic job of capturing how someone might react if something like this went down.

What a fantastic story. Quite the ride :-)

I started reading Naomi Novik's work when I read Uprooted. Then Spinning Silver. By then I was hooked on her writing style and excellent characterization. So when I found her other books, I bought them, even though I'm not generally a fan of stories that involve major wars.

This book is just as delightful as her other works. The characters are fantastic, the battles are thrilling and she doesn't linger too long on political aspects that can get boring in other war stories.

I unabashedly trust Naomi Novik to take me on an adventure with her stories. The way she weaves theme, plot, and character into the very fabric of her story is nothing short of delightful.

The characters in this book were wonderfully wrought. It took a little time to warm up to Oran, but he, Grim and Blackthorn were so enjoyable, especially with all of their complexities and flaws.

Highly recommend. It's sort of told as a medieval mystery, with plenty of character development to go along.

This book was a struggle for me to finish. But, let's start with its good points.

The world building was very interesting. I really enjoyed the author's conception of demons and witches. She created some fun side characters and she did hook me with an enticing mystery that kept me listening, despite disliking other aspects of the book.

Now the bad news. Others said that Harkness describes things too much. I agree. It reads like a middle draft that an editor never saw. When we're in a diner and are told every conceivable thing that happens before our hero gets her food, with no character/plot development in sight, it's hard not to yawn.

Others also said that it reads like an intelligent Twilight. While more complex, the story is a little TOO like Twilight. We still follow two love-sick people around in a fairly toxic relationship, pledging their love despite having only known each other a few weeks and putting literally everyone else in danger.

We are given a main character who is over-powered, has no real flaws except things like stubbornness and messy hair, and is super inconsistent, which I think speaks to either rushed editing or a debate in the author's mind. Our hero is supposed to be fiercely independent, yet submits to her new mate like it's 1953, only questioning him when it's plot convenient. If her 'love vs ideal' dilemma was explored, I'd have understood, but it's barely addressed.

I won't get the next book, despite this ending on a cliffhanger. Good world building, but not much else to my taste.

This book was lovely. The writing style was a little different, but enjoyable. The characters were memorable and the story intriguing. The reading was done with Irish accents that really helped drop you right into the story. I definitely recommend it.

I wasn't prepared for how much I would like this book. Novik writes in a short, unadorned style that still reads like poetry. Somewhere between Hemingway and Dickenson with an Eastern European twist.

The performance caught me off guard at first, since it's read in a heavy Russian/Polish accent. It almost bothered me until I fell into the rhythm of it and recognized that it allowed me to absorb the world more fully.

If you like modern fairytales, you'll enjoy the subtle twists in this book and if you like traditional fairytales you will like how old and beyond time this story feels. It's old in ambiance and modern in ideal.

This book is genuinely spellbinding, no pun intended.
