Historia
For centuries, the vineyards at Château Renard have depended on the talent of their vine witches, whose spells help create the world-renowned wine of the Chanceaux Valley. Then the skill of divining harvests fell into ruin when sorcière Elena Boureanu was blindsided by a curse. Now, after breaking the spell that confined her to the shallows of a marshland and weakened her magic, Elena is struggling to return to her former life. And the vineyard she was destined to inherit is now in the possession of a handsome stranger.

Captivating story and narrator
Revisado: 07-14-24
This world was easy to fall into. It felt realistic despite there being magic. My biggest annoyance was how as a reader it seemed obvious who the “bads” were, but not to the characters. That being said, some books are easy to figure out, this one wasn’t easy to guess the motivations as to why the antagonist did what they did. I was hooked through the end and look forward to continuing the series.

I can’t get into this
Revisado: 07-03-23
I wanted to love it, the reviews seemed like it would have everything that I love: magic, mystery, family but I just can’t get into it. It is too slow, it jumps all over the place, it takes so long to get to the point that I have given up before I reached it. After trying to push through with this one over a period of years, I’ve only made it a quarter way into the book. I’m just going to chalk it up as not for me. Maybe it gets better, but I can’t sit through it long enough to find out.

Enjoyable listen
Revisado: 07-03-23
This was a fairytale that felt kind of familiar, yet new. Fairytales always have some sort of darkness that the characters have to deal with and even as they were figuring out and dealing with the situations, the main characters didn’t seem helpless nor did they wait around for someone to save them. The resolution felt a little fast and I got to the end not wanting it to end, I wanted it to continue so I would know what is next for the wives. It feels like they have more story to tell.

I thought it would be thrilling, but it was a bit of a dud
Revisado: 10-02-22
I was thinking this would be a fun type of mystery that would take them all over Paris discovering and unearthing interesting things, and it ended up being too much back story and not enough mystery. There were no real stakes and though I felt for the main characters domestic situation and how it put her on the path to make the decisions she did, I think it could have been more of a back Burner story to the mystery but the mystery itself felt more of an after thought to all of the other family drama. I had such a hard time finishing this, I fell asleep several times and don’t know if it was the performance or the content, but in the end this one was just not for me.

Fun take on a known story
Revisado: 08-18-22
I enjoyed how characters that I am familiar with were put in a new story. Die hard fans may not love this take, but it was fun to see how the characters were used and reimagined.

Historia
Cecilia Bassingwaite is the ideal Victorian lady. She's also a thief. Like the other members of the Wisteria Society crime sorority, she flies around England drinking tea, blackmailing friends, and acquiring treasure by interesting means. Sure, she has a dark and traumatic past and an overbearing aunt, but all things considered, it's a pleasant existence. Until the men show up.

I loved this
Revisado: 06-20-22
It is witty and very enjoyable, the ridiculously proper juxtaposed to their criminal life style is a formula for great fun. I especially loved learning all the places a gentleman doesn’t murder a lady. I hope we see these characters again.

I loved this
Revisado: 04-17-22
I bought this on a whim during one of the sales and, on a trip to London I picked it as my travel listen. Without realizing it, I picked a hotel that is located where the murder takes place. The amount of detail and history that was given made my trip amazing as I tried to find out what was written on the horse’s bum (unfortunately gated off at the moment, so I didn’t solve that one 😜) and I felt like any moment I could see the characters walk around the corner. I suspect that, even if I were not listening to this in Covent Gardens I would have been just as enthralled. I look forward to diving deeper into this series.

A fun story but ending is too rushed
Revisado: 11-23-21
Overall I enjoyed the series. The characters were interesting and made you want to root for them. I especially enjoyed oh no who, with only 2 phrases said so much. Without giving spoilers, I would say that the ending was too abrupt. It felt like they spent so much time on the cyphers and puzzles that the ending seemed rushed and logically didn’t make sense (unless they’re in a paradox), like there could have been a whole other chapter or book between chapters 36 and 37 to better explain it.

I loved this book, very relatable
Revisado: 04-11-21
This was the first time I got to know a main character and thought, that could be me, on so many levels. I recently lost someone that I love and I didn’t expect to find an expression of that loss here. The advice given to this character on the issue of death at times felt like it was talking directly to me, and it was what I needed to hear at a point where I was ready to hear it, and I didn’t expect to find that here. I also didn’t expect to find such an honest and real expression of being a BlPOC. Growing up in the south, I have been through many similar experiences, and the exhaustion of being the only minority somewhere and being made to feel like you don’t belong, getting judged as less than, or a charity case and having to eat back words of frustration and take the abuse so as not to be seen as a problem...it was so real, and it made this story more realistic. It added layers and texture to a trope that is done over and over again ( outsider finds out about magic and ends up being special) and made it a bit more fresh. I loved the world building and the possibilities that this world could take (exploration of different magical cultures) and while I felt the story was predictable, I enjoyed seeing the characters’ growth and development. While I really enjoyed the narrator as the main character, I didn’t feel she had enough variation in other characters to tell some of them apart. I kind of think this would be better as a multi-narrator (where each has a few characters they speak for, not the chapter by chapter way) production.

Great story, good cultural bridge
Revisado: 03-28-21
I think this was a great story that introduces a culture and history in a way that was easy to get lost in. The characters are believable, for the most part, and it makes you want to know more about the myths and fairytales of other cultures. I also found the commentary of Mexico’s development and impact of other cultures really interesting.
