Historia
Julia Fox is famous for many things: her captivating acting, such as her breakout role in the film Uncut Gems; her trendsetting style, including bleached eyebrows, exaggerated eyeshadow, and cutout dresses; her mastery of social media, where she entertains and educates her millions of followers. But all these share the trait for which she is most famous: unabashedly and unapologetically being herself. This commitment to authenticity has never been more on display than in Down the Drain. With writing that is both eloquent and accessible, Fox recounts her turbulent path to cultural supremacy.

Excellent, honest, amazing
Revisado: 10-24-23
I can’t believe everything that Julia Fox has been through. She bravely shares it all with the listener, making all of us “weirdos” feel part of the family. It is very well-written and performed.

A sweet story about friendship
Revisado: 06-15-23
I was surprised how invested I got into the boy and Willie the ghost’s friendship. The subplot was also interesting and I definitely wanted to know how it ended

Historia
Camellia Beauregard is a Belle. In the opulent world of Orleans, Belles are revered, for they control beauty, and beauty is a commodity coveted above all else. In Orleans, the people are born gray, they are born damned, and only with the help of a Belle and her talents can they transform and be made beautiful. But it's not enough for Camellia to be just a Belle. She wants to be the favorite - the Belle chosen by the queen of Orleans to live in the royal palace, to tend to the royal family and their court, to be recognized as the most talented Belle in the land.

Captivating

I found this book and performance to be creative and captivating. The kingdom’s obsession with physical beauty is a mirror to our own society’s growing preoccupation.

Historia
Kate Burns grows up wanting attention from her Ma, but her Ma wants only money and Kate learns how to get both. She and her childhood friend, Lacey, run kissing lessons for cash in the janitor’s closet of Fenbrook High, and just like that, they find themselves in the sex work industry. From there, they go on to work at The Purple Panther, a strip club in Auckland. When Ma dies of cancer, Kate discovers that the men her Ma was always inviting over to their home were, in fact, clients. Ma was no stranger to sex work either.

Very engaging
Revisado: 11-25-22
This book hooked me right away and held my attention the whole way through. In my experience, this was one of the only books that centers sex work as a choice and not something to pity. I would read another book just on the stories of the other workers at the Hop.

Historia
Jennette McCurdy was six years old when she had her first acting audition. Her mother’s dream was for her only daughter to become a star, and Jennette would do anything to make her mother happy. So she went along with what Mom called “calorie restriction." She endured extensive at-home makeovers while Mom chided, “Your eyelashes are invisible, okay? You think Dakota Fanning doesn’t tint hers?” She was even showered by Mom until age sixteen while sharing her diaries, email, and all her income. In I’m Glad My Mom Died, Jennette recounts all this in unflinching detail.

Excellent memoir
Revisado: 08-31-22
Jeanette McCurdy created an unflinching and insightful memoir about her abusive mother, eating disorders, and unwanted childhood stardom. She was able to analyze her mother’s actions and motivations like few can. Though McCurdy has left acting, her acting shines through with the reading of her book. Highly recommended.

Soon after they set sail, the friends run into the captivating Savannah, who hitches a ride aboard the HMS Pogue when the weather worsens and her boyfriend leaves her stranded.

Kept me listening!
Revisado: 06-05-22
I thought this book would be a frothy teen story that I could fall asleep to. But I quickly got ensnared in the story and characters. It was far more than a light teen story. I hope there is more in the series.

Historia
It’s easy to be yourself when who and what you are is in vogue. But growing up Black and gay in America has never been easy. Before Billy Porter was slaying red carpets and giving an iconic performance in the celebrated TV show Pose; before he was the Tony Award-winning star of Broadway’s Kinky Boots; and before he was an acclaimed recording artist, actor, playwright, and all-around diva, Porter was a young boy who didn’t fit in.

Historia
After a long and eventful life, Allan Karlsson ends up in a nursing home, believing it to be his last stop. The only problem is that he's still in good health, and in one day, he turns 100. A big celebration is in the works, but Allan really isn't interested (and he'd like a bit more control over his vodka consumption). So he decides to escape. He climbs out the window in his slippers and embarks on a hilarious and entirely unexpected journey, involving, among other surprises, a suitcase stuffed with cash.

Boring
Revisado: 04-30-22
I really gave this book a chance but it continued to be boring. I enjoyed the parts set in present day with the expanding band of fleeing criminals. But all of Alan’s flashbacks were so tedious. I can’t understand how there is a sequel to this already bloated book.

I expected more
Revisado: 04-14-22
Leah McSweeny is known for being straightforward and honest. So I expected more (hopefully juicy) details from this book. Often, it felt like she glossed over serious events without providing any detail. Like the bad relationship that lead her to start drinking again. There was zero mention of the $10 million lawsuit brought (then dropped) by Supreme over her shirt. It seemed like she sprinkled in enough details to feel she had been honest in the book.
I think of memoirs like Andre Leon Talley or Angie Dickinson, who dropped major morsels throughout. While I appreciated her thoughts on modern feminism, sexuality, and being a woman business owner, the book left me kinda meh.
