Historia
Told with grace and deep understanding, as well as humor, Mia Farrow's exquisitely written memoir goes beneath the surface of her amazing life, with all its drama, success, and pain, and exposes the inner workings of a mind and spirit for whom truth, compassion, and faith are essential.

Why the shift?
Revisado: 06-01-24
I read this book when it was first released and then got the audibook because Mia was credited as the narrator. Like all of her performances, her narration is stellar. And then the shift. The new narrator introduces herself but the speech pattern is so poor, I did not get the name - even after playing it 7 times. My guess is that Mia did not want to recount that part of her story...? I just wish there had been some warning - like a credit for the co-narrator or some sentence from audible in the description that another narrator finishes the book, et cetera. While the new narrator does an awful job, the story is so well written I still recommend it. After reading this book, Woody's book, and seeing the HBO documentary - I lost one of my icons. I admired Woody's movies, books, and enjoyed his talent as a musician - that fell away for me. As a survivor of sexual abuse by a family member, this story resonates more than I can describe. my respect and admiration is what fell away for me. I tried to watch Manhattan and the two Rose movies and I felt nothing but anger and shame. I am glad (maybe that is the wrong word) that Mia was able to share this story.

Historia
Adam Binder has the Sight. It’s a power that runs in his bloodline: the ability to see beyond this world and into another, a realm of magic populated by elves, gnomes, and spirits of every kind. Years after his brother Bobby had him committed to a psych ward, Adam is ready to come to grips with who he is, to live his life on his terms, to find love, and maybe even use his magic to do some good. Hoping to track down his missing father, Adam follows a trail of cursed artifacts to Denver, only to discover that an ancient and horrifying spirit has taken possession of Bobby’s wife.

What is not to love in this amazing story?
Revisado: 11-02-23
The vivid description and relentless attention to detail in White Trash Warlock pulls the reader into an utterly original, supernatural world that exists just beyond our own dull, human senses. I was captivated from the start with the vulnerability that that author lyrically weaves throughout the piece. As if while getting to know Adam Lee Binder, we are getting a glimpse into the psyche of Daivd R. Slayton. In a writing master class, Margaret Atwood said that our own life experiences are valid and well worth sharing. After reading David’s bio, I think he brings the reader to the Guthrie he experienced. The raw power of that transports the reader, eyes wide shut, into Adam’s complex world. I spent many years of my youth in Lawton, Oklahoma. Like Adam, I cannot say that I miss that town, but this work produced a sense of wistfulness for those Canary yellow elbows at dinner and exploring the red dirt fields for arrowheads and other treasures. I also appreciate that David writes about a minority within the gay community that is largely absent in this genre. I appreciate that a gay man is writing about a gay male hero whose experience of love and sexuality exists beyond a gratuitous sexual encounter on the first night. That mirrors my own romantic life as a gay man, and, I am sure, I am not alone in that. I look forward to reading more about Adam Lee Binder and exploring the other amazing worlds that David R. Slayton creates.

Historia
Beau was devastated. After the worst day of his life, Caleb, the kindhearted and beautiful man he loved, had left him for good. Beau was now at the end of his rope - and the bottom of his last bottle. With trouble following him everywhere he went, he guessed it was only a matter of time before he turned into his messed-up dad, alone and yearning for a love he foolishly let slip through his fingers.

oh the plosive consonants
Revisado: 08-20-22
Poor narration of a pretty good story. The narrator was excruciatingly pedantic and provided no rhythm or levels to the story. The quantum leap ending is quite odd. Banner's work is impressive and always entertaining.

Historia
I'm not really good at making friends. That's simply a fact. I'm happy enough if I can just get through the school day, avoid eye contact with anything that breathes, and make it home where my family can continue ignoring my existence and I can play video games in peace. But then he crashes into my life like a tidal wave. The hot new senior at Spruce High. The bad boy everyone can't stop talking about.

The good and the bad
Revisado: 09-18-21
Great story about Spruce, Texas. The performer who voiced Toby to life is great. The same cannot be said for the performer who voiced Van - pedantic and breathy are the kindest adjectives I can write. Despite that, it was great to visit Spruce again and I look forward to more from Daryl.
