Historia
Britain's Special Air Service - or SAS - was the brainchild of David Stirling, a young, gadabout aristocrat whose aimlessness in early life belied a remarkable strategic mind. Where most of his colleagues looked at a battlefield map of World War II's African theater and saw a protracted struggle with Rommel's desert forces, Stirling saw an opportunity: Given a small number of elite, well-trained men, he could parachute behind enemy lines and sabotage their airplanes and war matériel.

Engrossing, does an excellent job of detailing the story of the origin and history of the SAS. The losses at war’s end are exceptionally painful to learn. Well told.

This was the first Riley Rose work I’ve listened to. The concept is clever to say the least and the author weaves her story into the original very well. Erotic? Found myself laughing too much to go there. An enjoyable listen.

Craig Childs bears witness to rock art of the Colorado Plateau—bighorn sheep pecked behind boulders, tiny spirals in stone, human figures with upraised arms shifting with the desert light, each one a portal to the open mouth of time. With a spirit of generosity, humility, and love of the arid, intricate landscapes of the desert Southwest, Childs sets these ancient communications in context, inviting listeners to look and listen deeply.

I will be in this area a few months from now. The friend who will be my guide has traveled these places for more than 50 years, introducing the young to its mysteries. For him it is a place of solace, his chosen therapy from the memories of our generations war. Listening to Childs work has increased my desire to be among the signs of “the Old ones.”

A story that has more twists and turns than you can imagine. Tragic in so many ways but this is a story that will stay with you for a long time. I think that is about as much of the story as I will tell, but worth the listen... many times over.

Johnnie Rico never really intended to join up—and definitely not the infantry. But now that he’s in the thick of it, trying to get through combat training harder than anything he could have imagined, he knows everyone in his unit is one bad move away from buying the farm in the interstellar war the Terran Federation is waging against the Arachnids. Because everyone in the Mobile Infantry fights. And if the training doesn’t kill you, the Bugs are more than ready to finish the job.

Well worth the listen.
Revisado: 11-13-24
Have been a fan of Heinlein for decades, hey I'm old. I had watched the original 1997 film and enjoyed it but wouldn't have rated it as excellent. Listened to this recording, not initially expecting it to different than then the movie. In many ways it's a coming of age story about a mobile infantry trooper, Johnny Rico. Buried in it, Henlein provides a critique of society of the 1950's as well as alternatives to government, politics and the military. Some have criticized the work in terms of mysogny, militarism and politics. I found the story to be interesting; forcing me to at least consider beliefs contrary to my own. Worth the listen.

A much deeper look into the air war in Europe
Revisado: 11-01-24
I have always been fascinated by military aviation, primarily the air battles during WWII. At 76 I've had an opportunity to review many tales but I would say that I honestly learned much new material listening to this book. It provides a deeper look at why the Allies elected to send these young men to the targets that the "brass" chose. Also a view from the Axis side that usually gets overlooked.
The loss of so many pilots and aircrew is deeply sobering in terms of young lives lost and the numbing fear the flyers experienced. . What was new for me was the close look at the experiences of German civilians, particularly during the latter part of the war. Literally Hell on earth for everyone. Mr Barrett's narration was always excellent, but I have never enjoyed listening to narrators trying to use accents of languages that are not native for them. It's a trivial issue but it was the main reason I did not give this work 5s across the board.

Historia
The daughter of a Chinese mother and a Japanese father, Gail Tsukiyama uses the Japanese invasion of China during the late 1930s as a somber backdrop for her unusual story about a 20-year-old Chinese painter named Stephen who is sent to his family's summer home in a Japanese coastal village to recover from a bout with tuberculosis. Here he is cared for by Matsu, a reticent housekeeper and a master gardener. Over the course of a remarkable year, Stephen learns Matsu's secret and gains not only physical strength, but also profound spiritual insight.

The heart of a Samurai
Revisado: 10-26-24
Five years ago I took up the study of Iaido, a 400 year old Japanese sword art. Thus the title easily caught my eye, even though I had a hunch that the work would not be about the sword. My teacher will occasionally treat us to talks he calls, "Coffee with Sensei; an attempt to relate some of the teaching of this art to our current lives.
I found this to be true of this work. No action, no pulse pounding fights but rather what I would call a look at the "soul" of a warrior. I rather think that the devotion, dedication and compassion that Matsu and Sochi share well illustrates that of the Samurai. The younger, Stephen and Keiko enhance the telling with their own tale of first love and loss.
No happy endings, but no tragic ones either. I do feel that I understand some of what my Sensei has tried to teach we iaidoko (students) lucky enough to work with him a little better. A great "read," enhanced by the narrator David Shah.

How Many Times??
Revisado: 09-24-24
I’ve worked in health care for 38 years and as I read this work I found myself thinking “how many times in those years have I worked beside a nurse veteran, neither of us knowing that there were two vets in that room?”
The description of a FNGs arrival in country was spot on and took me back to my own memories: sights, smells, humidity and fear. We men saw the horrors of war episodically; the nurses day after day. That it took so many years to recognize their contributions and trauma is one of the great tragedies of our war.
Some have criticized the 2nd half of the book. The criticism focuses on Frankie. I more focus on how her “sisters” stood beside her through it all, just as male vets stand beside each other. She made some terrible decisions, yes. But tell me, how does a society or parents prepare a young woman or man for war? When we returned we were not, nor will ever again be the boys and girls we were.

What is Western Civilization? According to Professor Noble, it is "much more than human and political geography," encompassing myriad forms of political and institutional structures - from monarchies to participatory republics - and its own traditions of political discourse. It involves choices about who gets to participate in any given society and the ways in which societies have resolved the tension between individual self-interest and the common good.

Historia
Anthony Fauci is arguably the most famous–and most revered–doctor in the world today. His role guiding America sanely and calmly through Covid (and through the torrents of Trump) earned him the trust of millions during one of the most terrifying periods in modern American history, but this was only the most recent of the global epidemics in which Dr. Fauci played a major role. His crucial role in researching HIV and bringing AIDS into sympathetic public view and his leadership in navigating the Ebola, SARS, West Nile, and anthrax crises, make him truly an American hero.

A Hero in So Many Ways
Revisado: 08-05-24
Listening to Dr Fauci relate the experiences of his life one gets the impression that this is both a great as well as a humble man. His narration was, for me, as interesting as the story of how he and his fellow researchers sought to understand the contagions that arouse over the decades of his service to this country and mankind. Educational and enjoyable.
