Historia
Ask anyone about the significance of the year 1492, and you're almost certain to hear something about Christopher Columbus and the discovery of the New World. But there is also a perspective on 1492 far different than the one most of us know-one that is more complete and complex. A 1492 when there was no country called Spain and no language called Spanish.

Good but with some issues
Revisado: 12-30-24
My initial reaction wasn't very good. The early chapters sounded like a Marxist approach to interpretation of history, from the point of view of a class struggle, which I don't find interesting. It also had one important factual inaccuracy, saying that Catalonia was one of the three kingdoms united under the King of Aragón (y Valencia). Catalonia was never a kingdom, but a loose alliance of nobles, led by the Count of Barcelona. This is not a trivial point, considering the current political separatist movements in the region, and their attempts to rewrite history.
I was tempted to stop listening but I am glad I didn't. the course took a turn for the better, with interesting observations about the Jewish and Muslim people in Spain, presenting various points of view for us listeners to explore and get to our own conclusions, without being pushy. Also the lectures about the arts were a good presentation.

Know the past, better understand the present.
Revisado: 11-15-22
This course has helped me gain a significantly better understanding of some of the issues being debated about current Supreme Court decisions. The professor presents his political views right from the start and openly notes how that influences the course, but overall I felt it was presented quite fairly. This course was created several years ago and that results in many important decisions and events of the XXI century not being covered but, on the other hand I think that it is a benefit the distance from current relativism, where seeking and respecting the truth seems to be sadly missing from many areas of public discourse.

Poorly edited, repetitive and poorly structured
Revisado: 10-25-22
Some interesting points but:
Too slow. Using audible's speedup is a must..
Too repetitive, it is not necessary repeating the same ideas several times to make a point.
Poorly edited, sometimes a sentence or word is said twice, as if the reader is not happy with how it came out the first time and re-read it, then forgot to edit out the first reading. There is also what seems to be a section from an unrelated (fiction) book mixed in (is it something from an older, unrelated recording session, or did Audible seriously messed up when downloading?)
Poorly structured, doesn't stay on topic and often starts talking extensively about a very marginally related topic.
Strangely mixes shallow sections where it doesn't explain much about the main topic with "side notes" that have much more detail than needed.
Sometimes the books almost feels as if the creator expects to gain something by making them longer, when actually it's just making the book worse.
If you get it on sale and have plenty of free time it may be ok, for those interesting moments, but in general I probably wouldn't recommend it. There are many books that are a better use of time and money

Everything we now know about the universe - from the behavior of quarks to the birth of galaxies - has come from people who've been willing to ponder the unanswerable. And with the advent of modern science, great minds have turned to testing and experimentation rather than mere thought as a way of grappling with some of the universe's most vexing dilemmas. So what is our latest picture of some of the most inexplicable features of the universe? What still remains to be uncovered and explored by today's scientists?

Does not feel like a course
Revisado: 04-10-18
A course normally gives you tools for understanding an area of knowledge and then it may set you on a path to solve some of the unknown questions in the field.
This feels more like an audio book about unsolved questions. It barely "teaches" enough to understand why they're good questions, and it definitely does not provide knowledge or tools to allow the student the means to attempt to solve any of the questions. After finishing it, I didn't feel like I had learned much.
Entertaining? Yes (if you like popular science) A great course? Not really

Mix of great and not so much
Revisado: 05-12-17
Having heard BBC's version of HHGTTG I had high expectations for this audiobook. Unfortunately I don't think it came close. It does have great gems of humorous wit but it also felt too verbose at times. The performance was clear, and being able to listen to the intention of the author is always a plus, but I felt it conveyed less excitement than other audio books I've got from Audible

Ray Kurzweil, the bold futurist and author of the New York Times best seller The Singularity Is Near, is arguably today’s most influential technological visionary. A pioneering inventor and theorist, he has explored for decades how artificial intelligence can enrich and expand human capabilities. Now, in his much-anticipated How to Create a Mind, he takes this exploration to the next step: reverse-engineering the brain to understand precisely how it works, then applying that knowledge to create vastly intelligent machines.

I quite liked how the mind was analyzed from a biochemical, algorithmic and metaphysical perspectives
The narration (performance) starts a little dull but don't give up, it then picks up.
If you are interested in Artificial intelligence and/or the human mind, this book belongs in your library.

Interestingly organized
Revisado: 10-21-16
I liked this course, presenting books focused on what we can learn from them, more than the literature. It is very interesting how it is organized in a non-chronological order. The topics flow very well from one book to the next. The only thing I didn't like was how fiction works were presented as a retelling, at times it felt like "books XYZ summarized and re-novelized for the person with no time to read them". The lesson I found most interesting was the one on Lord Acton, ironically "the best book never written"
