Michael Kelly needs to read to me

Joyland reminded me more of The Body (aka Stand By Me) than Salem Lot, It, or The Shinning. Most of Stephen Kings books left me still terrified 30 years later. I am still afraid to look directly into sewer drains just in case a creepy clown is staring back at me.

Joyland, like The Body, is just a good story about growing up, told like only a good story teller can, but with a dash of creepy. If you are expecting to be scared to death this is not the one for you, but if you like The Body, you will love this.

So lets talk about the narrator...

Dear Michael Kelly

Can you read to me every night? Seriously, I like House of Cards, but if Doug is actually dead, audio books narration is your new career.

Xoxo

There is no reason to review the contents of this book. Everyone knows what it is about. This review is for the narrator in particular. I liked the narrator. She doesn’t do that weird slurry “s” thing that drives me crazy. She is very good at keeping me awake (no monotone) and she dose accents/voices pretty well. My only problem with her is that they should have picked someone else. She is probably my age (I just had the 12 anniversary of my 29th birthday). Those in my age range are super cool, full of life wisdom, and incredible awesome. But…. Katniss is 17, and although she is super cool, she is not 29 + 12. I eventually grew used to the age of the narrator, and if you can get past that then it is still a simple story of love of family and friends.

I want more of Earl and Duke!

One of the best decisions I have made in my “reading” life is when I started following another member in the listener page section. She never steers me wrong!

This book was no exception. Gil’s All Fright Diner was short but packed full of so much fun it was hard to get out of the car. Don’t let the name scare you off. I wouldn’t put this is the horror section; more of the comedy (see zombie cows). The “scary” characters are not the stereotypical vampires and such. The little world that Martinez paints, where Vampires, Werewolves, Ghost and Ghouls are just hanging out with the rest of us, is so intriguing that my only regret is that this is not a series. I would love to follow Earl and Duke around for a few more stories. I like the new supernatural rules the author puts in the stories, like ghost not being able to leave the cemetery, and ghouls. I would like more of this world.

The narrator brings the story alive with his character voices. I look forward to finding more of his narrations.

If you could sum up The Martian in three words, what would they be?

Funny, Nail-biting adventure (yes I cheated)

What other book might you compare The Martian to and why?

There are no books like this one. May be Simon Pegg the actor, meets Apollo 13 the Movie, meets the Futuristic Technical Guide on how to stay alive when you are f**ked. Simon Pegg is hilarious to me. He could just say "hi" and I would laugh. The comedy in this book is also right up my ally. From page one I laughed. Who starts a book with "I’m pretty much f**ked."? I laughed and laughed out loud, (in my car, with the windows rolled down) at the things Mark "wrote" in his journal. Andy Weir must have my kind of sense of humor. Apollo 13 Movie gave me cold chills. This book did the same. The incredible anticipation of Mark's work all going to crap was terrifying at times. The technical aspect of everything... I have no idea if what he was doing would actually work or not, and honestly I don't care if it would have or not. The fact that I BELIEVED it would says a lot about the writing of Mr Weir.

Which character – as performed by R. C. Bray – was your favorite?

I like them all. Mark of course was the best.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Probably when he was finally able to make contact with earth.... Between fitful laughter, I found myself chewing my nails, while cold chills ran up my arms.

Any additional comments?

If you don't like the F bomb you should not read this book. I, however, am very familiar and friendlily with the F word and would have used it more than Mark.

If you don't like 7th grade humor... avoid as well. (see paraphrased example below)
Houston: "Also, please watch your language. Everything you type is being broadcast live all over the world."Mark: "Boobies"

Almost 4 stars but for Teela

First, I love Tom Parker/Grover Gardner reading anything! He brings such life into anything he reads. His different voices for the characters, is distinguishable, but not oddly so. I find some narrators try to make the voices so different that it is distracting or seems like they are trying too hard. Especially when attempting different genders. Parker/Gardner lulls me into the story like no other.

Despite my 3 stars I actually liked the story of Ringworld. Audible should break down rating into “story” and “characters”. The story I enjoyed. A little adventure in space… What could be better?

I should always consider the publication year when I read books (or never consider anything by B V Larson). Sometimes, not frequently, I run into what I like to call the “Madmen” phenomena: Stories set, or written in a time where women who are just there to be pretty and have “relations” with the men. This story was a bit like that.

Spoilers ahead:

Poor pitiful Teela too unadventurous to have ever left her world, falls in “love” , and like a puppy, follows a man across the universe. Then her naiveté puts her in danger constantly (you know, because she is a silly women) and her over-dramatic behavior has her crying all the time (SUCK IT UP), and her feeling are hurt constantly. What this!.... she falls in “love” again in a mere week! Silly women and their unformed brains, unable to be in anyway alone or independent! We should use them as chattel! At the end did she grow as a person?...NOPE! She again decides to follow a random man on his adventure. I would have just as soon left her out.

Everyone else I liked… Louis was a little “madmen” for having a 20 year old girl-friend. Plus I would have thought he would have better taste than the insipid, whinny little Teela. Nessus and Speaker where interesting counterpoints to each other. I enjoyed their argument quite a lot.

All in all, not a bad read.

Would you try another book from Marie Lu and/or Mariel Stern and Steven Kaplan ?

Yes, but only if I don't have anything I think I would like better.

Would you recommend Legend to your friends? Why or why not?

Only if they are tweaking for a young adult fix before the Hunger Games or Divergent movies come out.

Which scene was your favorite?

Escaping from the Army Base and the whole decoy brother incident.

If this book were a movie would you go see it?

Probably, just because I often like to see how other interpret the scenes, characters, and emotions.

Any additional comments?

Kind of like Insurgent, this book had a bit too much "I'm not listening to nobody" (a phrase I hear much too often, yes incorrect grammar and all). Granted, not as much as Insurgent, but almost enough for me not to like the main characters. I will read the others just so I can find out what will happen but I will read everything else I have first.

Would you consider the audio edition of Childhood's End to be better than the print version?

Why do you always ask this? Of course I do or I would have read it rather than listened. I can't read and drive or read and clean my house.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Karellen. He was like a wise old grandparent.

Which scene was your favorite?

Karellen explaining how human history has always had the overlord image as evil because their image seeped backwards through time. I actually had to stop the book and ponder that for a bit.

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

I would. If you read them all then why not finish.

If you’ve listened to books by Charlaine Harris before, how does this one compare?

Well the first few Sookie Stackhouse books were good. The rest were just alright. This one is just alright.

Did Johanna Parker do a good job differentiating all the characters? How?

She always does a good job.

If this book were a movie would you go see it?

Yes... I love Eric.

Any additional comments?

I don't get why everyone was so mad. It ended the only way it could.

Would you listen to Love Minus Eighty again? Why?

No, but that is because I have about 40 in my wish list. But if my wish list was completed and I would.

What did you like best about this story?

The love stories. I was surprised I became so involved with them.

What about the narrators’s performance did you like?

The were good. I like how they each did their own person. Good concept.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes. I couldn't wait to start it again. I would even listen to it while I was running.
