Historia
In the canton of Yarrowdale, at the very edge of the Empire’s reach, a Treasury officer has disappeared into thin air—vanishing from a room within a heavily guarded tower, its door and windows locked from the inside. To solve the case, the Empire calls on its most brilliant and mercurial detective, the great Ana Dolabra. At her side, as always, is her bemused assistant Dinios Kol. Ana soon discovers that they are investigating not a disappearance but a murder—and one of surpassing cunning, carried out by an opponent who can pass through warded doors like a ghost.

Don't skip the author's note at the end!!
Revisado: 04-19-25
A stunning story of deceit and betrayal and the expert nosing out of the crimes and criminals by the team of Ana and Din. The side characters were fully fleshed out and contributed much to the main plot. RJB has once again stunned his readers with a magnificent story. The narrator Andrew Fallaize has it all: The unique voices, proper timing, and an excellent all around voice. I hope there will be a continuation of this series with Andrew as the narrator. Highly, highly recommended!

But the ghosts of past wars have followed her there, and soon she begins to wonder what happened to the souls in the afterlife when the gods were defeated by her people, the Polis. Do the dead sleep soundly in the land of death?

Riveting story

impossible for me to stop listening to the City
of Blades, so I lost sleep and it was worth it. Bennett has an extraordinary imagination and world building talent. He has an acute understanding of motivation and the ability to vividly portray action and dialogue.
I have only one small quibble with the performance: an occasional lack of passion when passion was most needed, otherwise excellent timing and unique voices, I will happily listen to more recordings by Alma. I highly recommend the entire series of The Divine Cities.

The investigation is assigned to Eve Ronin, the youngest homicide detective in the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, a position that forces her to prove herself again and again. This time, though, she has much more to prove. Bones don’t lie, and these have a horrific story to tell. Eve tirelessly digs into the past, unearthing dark secrets that reveal nothing about the case is as it seems.

I enjoyed this production. I doubt the police characters were realistic but I have no way of knowing, nevertheless the portrayals of them were intriguing. The narrator is excellent.

Fiercely loyal to his friends and comrades, Ewan Mostyn is the toughest in a group of younger sons of nobility who met as soldiers and are now trying desperately to settle back into peaceful Society. Ewan trusts his brawn more than his brains, but when he's offered a job watching the Duke of Ridlington's stubbornly independent daughter, he finds both are challenged. Lady Lorraine wants none of her father's high-handed ways, and she'll do everything in her power to avoid her distressingly attractive bodyguard - until she lands herself in real trouble.

pleasant and easy to listen to
Revisado: 01-11-25
A very simple story read by a very good narrator. A bit of a cliche yet I could easily get past that and enjoy the plot. There were several strange repeats of lines and at first I thought my attention had wandered, but no, the narrator does repeat (just a few) lines.
For those listeners who prefer to avoid graphic sex, you may want to give this a mess. The sex isn't coercive or bizarre, actually fairly tame for modern romances.

tremendous!
Revisado: 12-21-24
I absolutely loved this story and its occult aspects. The characters were very well drawn in the usual Joy Ellis fashion (such a talent!) and the dialogue was realistic. I found the reader to be very good except that she would gasp after a few sentences and I find this very distracting in any reader. I realize it's a common fault but I also know that it's easily avoided. I do wish there were more books in the series. Highly recommended!

Sophy Hadlow does not want to return for another London Season. Her own debut into Society was marred by self-consciousness and her cringing embarrassment every time she was announced as ‘The Lady Sophronia Hadlow’. Yet, much to her dismay, Sophy is back in London to oversee the debut of her younger sister and their wild cousin, Susan Tyneham, who risks ruining both her own and her innocent cousin’s chances of marriage.

Excellent in all ways, engaging characters and plot. There are, perhaps, a few trite tropes but Holloway weaves them better clothing. Addis voices each character in different and suitable tones. 5 stars all around.

Historia
In Daretana’s greatest mansion, a high imperial officer lies dead—killed, to all appearances, when a tree erupted from his body. Even here at the Empire’s borders, where contagions abound and the blood of the leviathans works strange magical changes, it’s a death both terrifying and impossible. Assigned to investigate is Ana Dolabra, a detective whose reputation for brilliance is matched only by her eccentricities. Rumor has it that she wears a blindfold at all times, and that she can solve impossible cases without even stepping outside the walls of her home.

Absolutely terrific!
Revisado: 07-16-24
This story! What a fascinating world, I was entranced the entire time and didn't want the book to end. Superb characterization and a perfect narration made this a joy to listen to. Bennett is among my absolute favorite writers.
I'm so glad the producer chose this narrator, Andrew managed all the voices with great ease and was always easy to understand, he avoided several pitfalls: Reducing volume at the endings of sentences and falling into a rhythmic pattern. (I do wish that better narrators were chosen for Bennett's other books.)
I've already placed a pre-order for the second book in this series and happily anticipate its arrival.
