Pretty long
Revisado: 06-08-25
I love Chernow’s books, including this one, but thought this one got a little longer than it needed to be. Twain had a complicated and, I think, sad life and was a complex man who treated many of those around him poorly. This biography made me like him a little less than I did before reading the book. It’s worth a read for the simple fact that it shows how much a man’s public image can differ from the private life he’s leading.
The reader quoted Twain using a voice that sounded like what I suspected he would, and I did enjoy that.

I had always wanted to know more about the Habsburg empire during this period in time. This book gives a mostly factual and interesting description from the perspective of one of the participants.

I find myself no longer wanting to drink any alcohol! This is coming from a social drinker who occasionally had two or three drinks at parties just to feel a little buzz.

Spanning the years 1900 to 1977, The Covenant of Water is set in Kerala, on South India’s Malabar Coast, and follows three generations of a family that suffers a peculiar affliction: in every generation, at least one person dies by drowning—and in Kerala, water is everywhere. Long but really got into it by the end..a very worthwhile read (listen)
Revisado: 10-05-24
The story was hard for me to get into at first but I became totally obsessed with it by the end. I highly recommend it. The writing is beautiful, the characters are very interesting and realistic, and the medical conditions and treatments are nicely woven into the story.

Funny and serious at the same time
Revisado: 09-05-24
I have read or heard most but not all of the scientific concepts discussed here. The almost gossipy aspects of the circumstances surrounding publication and acceptance of key concepts is what held my interest the most here. Some of the material is becoming dated but I still think it’s worth a listen.

After three long years of scrimping and saving to buy tickets for their passage to America, Roald and Ingeborg Bjorklund, along with their son, Thorliff, finally arrive at the docks of New York City. It was the promise of free land that fed their dream and lured them from their beloved home high above the fjords of Norway in 1880. As they join the throngs of countless immigrants passing through Castle Garden, the Bjorklunds soon discover that nothing is as they had envisioned it.

For a younger audience
Revisado: 07-22-24
I love historical fiction and have ancestors that were farmers who homesteaded and settled in ND. However, this book just didn’t do much for me. I think maybe it was written for sixth graders. The characters are opaque, the conversations and events are G-rated to the point of becoming uninteresting. The reading sounded like a computer voice performed it. It just didn’t keep my interest and I eventually abandoned it a little over half way through.

Set in the mountains of southern Appalachia, Demon Copperhead is the story of a boy born to a teenaged single mother in a single-wide trailer, with no assets beyond his dead father’s good looks and copper-colored hair, a caustic wit, and a fierce talent for survival. Relayed in his own unsparing voice, Demon braves the modern perils of foster care, child labor, derelict schools, athletic success, addiction, disastrous loves, and crushing losses.

A peek into a troubled life
Revisado: 06-18-24
It took a little time getting into the speaking style, but once in, I could not stop listening to this story. As sad as the overall story was, there was a lot of humor in the observations and descriptions made by the main character. I found myself very much interested in his life - but glad it wasn’t my life.

Historia
On January 28, 1742, a ramshackle vessel of patched-together wood and cloth washed up on the coast of Brazil. Inside were thirty emaciated men, barely alive, and they had an extraordinary tale to tell. They were survivors of His Majesty’s Ship the Wager, a British vessel that had left England in 1740 on a secret mission during an imperial war with Spain. While the Wager had been chasing a Spanish treasure-filled galleon known as “the prize of all the oceans,” it had wrecked on a desolate island off the coast of Patagonia.

Unexpected ending

It’s an amazing story with many twists and turns but I just didn’t care much for the narrator. It is a complicated story to tell, with so many ships and men, so this had me starting to doze off during the first chapters. By the end, though, I could not stop listening.
