Historia
Compiled by intrepid journalist Neve Pride, this archive of recordings spans the months after dragons emerged on earth, chronicling the communities that sprang up amid the destruction, the scientists, military leaders, and experts searching for a defense, and those steadfastly seeking the missing. Neve and her young daughter Bex travel among the wreckage speaking to those left behind and surviving, against all odds. Neve records everything for history, and in the hopes of locating a clue as to where the dragons came from and how one might stop them.

Slow and focused on virtue signaling and not dragons.

Interesting concept but bland execution of the story.
Revisado: 04-03-25
The performers did their best but it was not a riveting story, unfolding as it did as a series of memories. This should have been a companion piece to an action novel.

Historia
Sixteen-year-old Odile vies for a coveted seat on the Conseil. If she earns the position, she’ll decide who may cross her town’s heavily guarded borders. To the east, the town is twenty years ahead in time. To the west, it’s twenty years behind. The towns repeat in an endless sequence across the wilderness. When Odile recognizes two visitors she wasn’t supposed to see, she realizes that the parents of her friend Edme have been escorted across the border from the future, on a mourning tour, to view their son while he’s still alive in Odile’s present.

Great story, innovative use of time travel
Revisado: 03-16-24
First of all, I typically worry about genre novels, written by non-genre authors. Rest assured, you are in good hands. This is an interesting and novel take on time travel it will be familiar enough that you can follow the issues if you are a sci-fi, fan, but novel enough that you will be intrigued. The main character is interesting, it feels as if she is held at arms length from herself, almost throughout the entire novel, she feels strange and isolated. It made me able to view her from a distance, and I liked her, even though I knew that she was odd. I enjoyed very much her object of affection even if he was not very well flushed out. Some of the other characters had flashes of real interest, Edme’s best friend, and at times, Jo. I found the world building good, but more of a broad sketch than a detailed dive. The writing was wonderful. The first part of the novel was a bit of a slog, but by the end I was breathless with anticipation. Recommended.

Amusing. Helpful. More fun than it should have been.
Revisado: 02-13-24
Really enjoyed David Mitchell’s take on English Monarchical history—he gives a short discussion of all those who ruled England through Elizabeth I, and both clarifies and simplifies what can be a very tangled subject. He does it with erudition and wry humor. He is clearly not a royalist but he is also clearly a man who is fascinated by his country’s history. This is a very nice primer /entry way to those who would like to have a little more background on Britain.

Dang it, it was so beautiful
Revisado: 11-21-23
I am so angry that Pat Rothfuss is such a good author that I can’t be angry that he didn’t give me Doors of Stone. I want that book so much, and this is not that book—-this is a tender book of joy and mischief and terror and beauty. The prose is magical. Bast is wonderful. Rike is so incredible. I love this. Get it, read it. Love it.

Revisado: 11-20-23
Enjoyable continuing saga of the life and times of a loveable libertarian badass. Jake is morally on the edge, uninterested in your opinion, and happy to fight for your freedom to be a jerk. He hates slavers, loves freedom, and just wants to do his best to get stronger. His friendship with Villie is very enjoyable. I appreciate the no harem-ness and no squicky sex.

Dated in a non charming way, bad performance
Revisado: 10-13-23
I was really looking forward to digging into a McBain book. Maybe this wasn’t the best one to start with. Maybe I was on an off day. Who knows but I really did not enjoy this virtually actionless conversational “investigation”. The narrator was plain awful, and the writing was painful. In particular, the writing for the little “5” year old girl was much more like writing for a weird 16 yo girl. Just say no unless you like tepid pointless stories.

Glad it’s over. It ended well but didn’t need to be this long.
Revisado: 07-14-23
I loved the first 7-8 books in this series-absolutely loved them….but they started to become a grind at the end. This last book was unnecessary, and the story should have wrapped up 2 books ago, but I’m glad I stuck with it. Had a nice emotional closure point at the end, and I still liked the series as a whole quite a lot. Farewell, system.
