Historia
The narrator of Atwood's riveting novel calls himself Snowman. When the story opens, he is sleeping in a tree, wearing an old bedsheet, mourning the loss of his beloved Oryx and his best friend Crake, and slowly starving to death. He searches for supplies in a wasteland where insects proliferate and pigoons and wolvogs ravage the pleeblands, where ordinary people once lived, and the Compounds that sheltered the extraordinary. As he tries to piece together what has taken place, the narrative shifts to decades earlier. How did everything fall apart so quickly?

Depressing
Revisado: 02-04-25
(Audiobook review) A dystopian story about a dark future involving genetic engineering. The book is pretty depressing. Margaret Atwood must have a pretty pessimistic outlook on life. Story is told in two separate timelines jumping back and forth. Anyways, I dunno how I feel about this book. Mixed?

Historia
Ensign Andrew Dahl has just been assigned to the Universal Union Capital Ship Intrepid, flagship of the Universal Union since the year 2456. Life couldn’t be better…until Andrew begins to pick up on the facts that (1) every Away Mission involves some kind of lethal confrontation with alien forces; (2) the ship’s captain, its chief science officer, and the handsome Lieutenant Kerensky always survive these confrontations; and (3) at least one low-ranked crew member is, sadly, always killed.

Silly fun
Revisado: 01-08-25
(Audiobook review) Wil Wheaton narrates it! A silly spoof on the Original Star Trek series. It is not actually Star Trek, but clearly a parody of it. Light fun. Gets pretty ridiculous as the story goes on.

Winner of the 1961 Hugo Award for Best Novel and widely considered one of the most accomplished, powerful, and enduring classics of modern speculative fiction, Walter M. Miller’s A Canticle for Leibowitz is a true landmark of 20th-century literature—a chilling and still-provocative look at a postapocalyptic future.

Post-apocalyptic monks
Revisado: 12-10-24
(Audiobook review) Takes place 600 years after a nuclear holocaust. Follows monks of some religious order discovering items from before, and trying to figure out their purpose. There is a cute moment where they find a "Fallout Shelter", and assume a "Fallout" is some kind of monster. The story kinda reminds of Isaac Asmimov's "Foundation" story, in regards to exploring the fall of civilization and the rebuilding afterwards, but on a smaller scale. Side note: lots of Carholic church stuff and Latin phrases.

poetic and whimsical
Revisado: 11-19-24
(Audiobook review) Whimsical and poetic writing style. Kinda reminds me of "The Once and Future King", or maybe a Wes Anderson movie (at least in the beginning - the second half gets a bit more somber). Not really my cup of tea, personally, but charming.

Ocean's Eleven
Revisado: 11-05-24
(Audiobook review) Story about a thief/con man, and friends. They do some cons, have adventures, etc. It kinda reminds me of Ocean's 11. Takes place in a medieval or renaissance Venice-like city, with canals and Italian sounding names. The city sometimes feels like its own character as well. Some magic, but fairly light. Good story.

Wil Wheaton!
Revisado: 08-27-24
(Audiobook review) I got this on a whim, cuz it had a picture of a cat, and I've read other John Scalzi books. Very fun! The author has a sort-of sarcastic, stream-of-conscience writing style that I imagine could be off-putting for some, but I enjoyed it.
And Wil Wheaton narrating was awesome!

Historia
Narrator Dan Stevens ( Downton Abbey) presents an uncanny performance of Mary Shelley's timeless gothic novel, an epic battle between man and monster at its greatest literary pitch. In trying to create life, the young student Victor Frankenstein unleashes forces beyond his control, setting into motion a long and tragic chain of events that brings Victor to the very brink of madness. How he tries to destroy his creation, as it destroys everything Victor loves, is a powerful story of love, friendship, scientific hubris, and horror.

over 200 years old
Revisado: 08-14-24
(Audiobook review) Wow, over 200 years old. Old English-ey language, with silly words like "countenance" and "fortitude". A bit overly dramatic and sensitive, with long sentences. But kinda interesting just to hear such a different style of writing. Audiobook seems a good way to just power through some sometimes obtuse language. It definitely feels like it was written by a woman, and it sometimes feels like I am listening to "Pride and Prejudice" or "Little Women".
So dramatic - it is like an "emo" book. Everyone complains about their feelings. The poor monster is all sad and alone, and just wants love. Yeah, this book does not meet the expectations set by popular culture.
Overall, although I'm sure this book was great in it's time, it doesn't really hold up well 200 years later.

Satisfying conclusion
Revisado: 07-27-24
(Audiobook review) A pretty satisfying conclusion to this whacky series. Side observation: The author has a weird way of non-chalantly handling some major events in the story. "So-and-so died." Wait, what!?

Historia
For years, Glen Cook's Black Company series has built a major audience among fantasy fans. Told from the "worm's-eye" view of the soldiers and functionaries who fight in the trenches of vast sorceress wars, this epic has riveted a generation of readers. If the Joseph Heller of Catch-22 were to tell the story of The Lord of the Rings, it might read like the Black Company books.

Time jump, new characters
Revisado: 04-29-24
I was surprised to discover that the book starts out with a big time jump - about 14 years. And now the main character is Sleepy. The ending of the previous book was a bit unclear to me, so the start of this one clarified things a bit.
I was surprised how much I enjoyed this story, based on my declining interest in the previous books. Hard to say why. Maybe because I liked Sleepy?
