Historia
Moving to America in 2008, Finnish journalist Anu Partanen quickly went from confident, successful professional to wary, self-doubting mess. She found that navigating the basics of everyday life - from buying a cell phone and filing taxes to education and childcare - was much more complicated and stressful than anything she encountered in her homeland. At first she attributed her crippling anxiety to the difficulty of adapting to a freewheeling new culture. But as she got to know Americans better, she discovered they shared her deep apprehension.

Persuasion is not a result of repetition
Revisado: 09-05-20
I was so excited to begin reading this book. My Norwegian ancestry was likely a subliminal factor but my curiosity about Finnish education was the main reason for my interest. With only a few chapters to go, however, I am not sure I will finish the book. For one, It has been monotonous and repetitive throughout. More importantly, however, I’m disappointed that the author seems to selectively chooses which arguments to refute (typically the low hanging fruit) and then misses some obvious arguments that may not support her conclusions. The reader is left to wonder if those arguments were considered at all or if they were intentionally left unaddressed. With these apparent flaws in the analyses, it was hard for me form an alliance with the author. And again, the repetition that just spirals around and around..... Perhaps addressing the points more fully and fairly, regardless of the outcome, would build credibility with readers and show self confidence on the part of the author.
Instead, I’m left feeling that I’m missing the full data needed to draw my own conclusions.

First celebrated for her voice, she became one of the most talked-about women in the world, whether for music and fashion, her relationship struggles, or as a walking blonde joke. But now, instead of being talked about, Jessica is doing the talking. Her audiobook shares the wisdom and inspirations she’s learned and shows the real woman behind all the pop-culture clichés. Open Book is an opportunity to laugh and cry with a close friend, one that will inspire you to live your best, most authentic life, now that she is finally living hers.

Authentic and transparent. She speaks from her heart and sounds like a friend.

Her journey was relatable despite her fame. Her courage to tell the truth and not hold back makes her memoir more meaningful and worthy compared to the typical celebrity “tell-all.” Still breaking new ground, I hope others follow her lead. She has a beautiful voice and her songs are fabulous.

Painful!
Revisado: 03-19-19
The book starts out well enough. I’m easily engaged and begin to understand the characters’ points of view and the general plot. However, at about the 10th chapter, The story became unbearable. The protagonists’ choices are not logical and she continues making the same mistakes over and over again. It’s like watching a scary movie and thinking why is the person going outside alone in the dark when she hears a disturbing noise?

Historia
From the creator of the blog Renegade Mothering, Janelle Hanchett's forthright, darkly funny, and ultimately empowering memoir chronicling her tumultuous journey from young motherhood to abysmal addiction and a recovery she never imagined possible. Pregnant at 21 by a man she'd known three months, Janelle Hanchett embraced motherhood with the determined optimism of the recklessly self-confident. After giving birth, she found herself bored, directionless, and seeking relief in wine, which she justified as sophisticated and going well with chicken.

Heartbreakingly Honest, Insightful and So True
Revisado: 03-17-19
I don’t write many reviews but feel compelled to for this book as I wonder why it is not in the window of every book store I pass. I feel riveted having just ended the most profoundly tragic journey, followed by a triumphant defeat. This book will stay with me. So many I read do not.
The writer shares with intimate detail, what it is to be human. She shows us what we are all facing. This is a story about the lives of those in our nation. It’s about our community, our neighbors, our friends, our family, our children, and our partners. It’s about us. It is our story whether we chose to see it or not. It is a story as old as time and yet it is even more relevant today—right now... at this moment.
In the end, we learn there isn’t anything we can do to help struggling addicts. For the author, it wasn’t the shame or mother’s guilt that paved the way to sobriety. Rather, it was a purely conscious desire to live and it surfaced only when her odds of continuing to live and use were gone. We understand this when the author is standing in line to buy red Solo cups at a liqueur store. Another addicts journey is not your own.
There are many heroes that surface in the pages of this memoir. Some show the meaningful ways to help children and others hurt by addicts. Perhaps more importantly, these heroes show us there is nothing we can do to make an addict want of achieve sobriety. Other heroes are those who have been on the same path to sobriety and are willing to share their journey to help others. Now, the author, Janelle Hanchett is one of those heroes.

If you could sum up Masterminds in three words, what would they be?
Amazing! Spectacular! Unbelievable!
What was one of the most memorable moments of Masterminds?
This is my son's 3rd book by Korman. He first read 'Ungifted' a few years ago and then recently decided to read it again. He loved it all over again. So I then bought him 'Schooled' and he read it straight through and wanted to retart it again right away. I decided to look for more Korman books after that and he picked this one. In my 10 year old's own words, "The book is amazing." "The adventure is spectacular --and you won't believe what happens in the story!" He woke up very early this morning to continue reading. At about 8:00 am. he came bounding into my bedroom to tell me an unbelievable plot twist! -Very exciting!! He can't wait to start the second book in this series.
What does the narrators bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
The multiple voices help to make the story more vivid in my son's imagination.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
Best story ever!

Great for the Whole Family!

We thought I our 9 year old son might be is a little old for this but we played it on a car ride anyway. It turns out, the whole family was listening and laughing. We loved it!
