Perfect Story, Perfect Performance
Revisado: 02-19-25
Part poem, part nightmare, this book will live with you a long time. Painful, beautiful, impossible. The characters belong with Addicus Finch and the Old Man of the sea. Layer upon layer of consistency and contradiction. I dare you not to love them.
Edoardo Balletini was my favorite Sleep Story narrator on the Calm ap. His crafted, smooth voice put me to sleep every time, so I wanted more. I never could have guessed at the range of his talent—conversations of 3-4 people in All the Colors where none of them are ever muddled or confused; Sammy’s drunk, stentorian baritone; Patch’s 13-year-old quaver.
What a gift this audiobook is. I hope you find unwrap it.

Historia
An unexpected death on a lonely road outside of Utah’s Bears Ears National Park raises questions for Navajo Tribal Police officers Jim Chee and Bernadette Manuelito. Why would a seasoned outdoorsman and well-known paleontologist freeze to death within walking distance of his car? A second death brings more turmoil. Who is the unidentified man killed during a home invasion where nothing seems to have been taken? Why was he murdered? An illicit business, a fossilized jaw bone, hints of witchcraft, and a mysterious disappearance during a blizzard add to the peril.

What a Disappointment
Revisado: 12-27-24
Ridiculous plot. Unbelievable characters. Faulty police procedure. And our beloved Navajo cops shoot culprits instead of using their wisdom and skill to bring bad guys to Justice.
With each new story, Anne Hillerman further corrupts her father’s creation. She plops blobs of research in the middle of boring scenes and repeats herself over and over to stretch out her thin and unbelievable plots. Chee and Bernie have real issues to deal with in this story, but end up victims of Hillerman’s convoluted narrative.
Speaking of narrative, the reader is as horrible as the book. She speeds and garbles the words, then reads haltingly with no regard for phrasing, and has no skill for characterization. My fifth grade teacher could do this much better.
I enjoyed the father’s creation, but cannot stomach another of the daughter’s. I’ll miss Leaphorn, Chee and Bernie.

Best When the Veil is Thin
Revisado: 10-15-24
Longmire is at his best when The Old One’s (et al.) help him out. The stories are richer, the connections to Nature deeper, the poetry more poignant.
It was a relief to have very little of Vic Moretti this time, too. I loved her sass in the beginning, but ever since she and Walt crossed the line she’s just strident and generally useless as a cop. Johnson destroyed the lovely sexual tension the characters enjoyed and turned Walt into one more middle aged lothario agonizing over schtuping a woman half his age. He deserves better. And so does Vic. I can only hope Johnson addresses this problem in future installments, because I love Walt.

Disappointing Performance
Revisado: 04-10-24
It’s always hard when a new reader takes over a long series. I try to be accommodating, but Elliott Hill didn’t do his research. And we already know the Audibles’ directors don’t either.
His Fitz is lovely, so that saved the books in this trilogy for me. But the dialogue is weirdly paced, stunted and jerky, so everyone sounds like a mistake. Worse, the over-the-top, foppish, Monty Python accent of the Farseer Nobles made me want to bite someone. After getting to know Dutiful and Ketrikan in the second series as complex, thoughtful souls, this mismatch made me mourn them. And why in the world would Lant speak through gritted teeth? Ugh!

Historia
Bounty hunter Stephanie Plum is back. The brassy babe in the powder blue Buick has been given the unpopular task of finding Mo Bedemier, Trenton's most beloved citizen, arrested for carrying a concealed weapon, gone no-show for his court appearance. Once again, the entire One for the Money crew is in action, searching for Mo, tripping down a trail littered with dead drug dealers, leading Stephanie to suspect Mo may be in over his head.

Too Many Stupid Characters
Revisado: 03-11-24
I know Stephanie’s not the sharpest tack, but this is too much. And she surrounds herself with characters even more brainless than herself. It’s unbearable. Plus, there’s not nearly enough of Joe Morelli. And Evonavich can’t seem to think of anything to do with the Plum family besides dinner and whining.
While the narrator has always done great New Jersey accents, I’ve never cared for her shouting pace. With all the other irritants in this third installment, I can’t recommend it. Nor will I try #4.

Historia
In telling the story of how I came to be cast as Atticus Finch, I think back to the young actor I used to be. I imagine the older me and the younger me sitting on a bench in Central Park. I imagine our conversation. The first season of Alive & Well Enough wraps up with “The End,” a song I recorded years ago with my Circle Rep friend and fellow songwriter Jonathan Hogan about looking back on a life spent telling stories.

Anything You Need is Here
Revisado: 03-04-24
It’s hard to write about something that moved me, is still moving me, as much as Alive & Well Enough. The surprise of Jeff’s music—hilarious, poignant, spot-on—made me shout out loud. A lot. I’m sure my neighbors wonder what exactly I’m doing here in my bedroom.
And the stories he chose to tell that carried no stink of “memoir.” And how those two elements twined around each other to offer up a man who had learned a few things in his 60+ years. Boy howdy! I’m sure glad I got to meet him.

Join David as he encounters his eccentric Aunt Betsey, faithful Peggotty and the villainous Uriah Heep, and as he falls in love with Little Em'ly, Dora and Agnes. And then there is old school friend James Steerforth: dashing, daring and seductive. This dramatisation explores the complexities and intimacies of that relationship beyond anything possible in Dickens' day, in an adaptation giving fresh life and vividness to this beloved tale.

Finest Performances You’ll Never Hear
Revisado: 03-03-24
What an array of talent! Richard Armitage is deliciously evil, HBC and Toby Jones delightful, but the Sound Engineer fell asleep because you can’t hear them! The conceit of placing characters speaking from a distance farther away from the microphone didn’t work. Add loud sound effects (clomping shoes, street noise) and you get a one-sided conversation!
The story also needed another good edit. The titillating adaptations didn’t make much sense, though they did perk up the constant traveling to and fro and dragging pace. Clearly the hot-shot Executive Producer phoned in his advise.
On the bright side, we got all those stellar performers for free! Just don’t try to multi-task while listening to this one. You need both hands free to keep adjusting the volume.

Historia
Chava is a golem, a woman made of clay, who can hear the thoughts and longings of those around her and feels compelled by her nature to help them. Ahmad is a jinni, a restless creature of fire, once free to roam the desert but now imprisoned in the shape of a man. Fearing they’ll be exposed as monsters, these magical beings hide their true selves and try to pass as human - just two more immigrants in the bustling world of 1900s Manhattan. Brought together under calamitous circumstances, their lives are now entwined - but they’re not yet certain of what they mean to each other.

My Second Wish Granted
Revisado: 10-08-23
A review shouldn’t just gush, so I’ll try to control myself. Here are the things I enjoyed about Helene Wecker’s second book:
1. The relationship between Golem & Jinni is so complex. It made me laugh at times as it is the most HUMAN and realistic love story I’ve ever read.
2. The rich interweaving of cultures, history, myth and settings. Wecker creates a complete world in lush detail. It is easily accessible unlike other created worlds I’ve read, a mark of her exceptional storytelling.
3. The slow progression of story. I got impatient mid-way, but the pace is deliberate. We need to see how all the characters change over time, how they create the crucible that brings them to Part 3. If you get irritated, try to relax. The payoff is worth it.
4. George Guidall’s artistry as a performer. I trust him completely, so I’m never yanked out of the story by false notes. He gives voice to all the complexities of character, brings the perfect touch of humor or pathos. He can load one word with tears.
5. The story isn’t over. I look forward to a third wish granted in the next installment.

Historia
Helene Wecker's dazzling debut novel tells the story of two supernatural creatures who appear mysteriously in 1899 New York. Chava is a golem, a creature made of clay, brought to life by a strange man who dabbles in dark Kabbalistic magic. When her master dies at sea on the voyage from Poland, she is unmoored and adrift as the ship arrives in New York Harbor. Ahmad is a jinni, a being of fire, born in the ancient Syrian Desert. Trapped in an old copper flask by a Bedouin wizard centuries ago, he is released accidentally by a tinsmith in a Lower Manhattan shop.

Chaos Theory in Practice
Revisado: 07-22-23
I love Wally Lamb. I love how layered and convoluted his stories are, how damaged his characters. With George Guidall’s outstanding performance, I held my breath through each convolution, bifurcation, and twist in the maze. This book is life-changing.
One suggestion: tighter editing of the Lizzie Poplar story. Long and not always relevant.
