The ninth novel in the thrilling Empire sequence leads Centurion Marcus Aquila and the Tungrians to the battlefield that was one of Rome's most disastrous defeats. The Tungrians have no sooner returned to Rome than they find themselves tasked with a very different mission from their desperate exploits in Parthia.

Increasingly Disappointed
Revisado: 10-30-21
Reading the series up to this book, I find myself many pages ahead of the text due to its obvious nature. And, yet, the author saw the necessity of including a detailed overview of the period and Legion makeup rather than its skillful incorporation in the novel itself as most authors of the period do. Frankly, after reading fiction and non-fiction of the period for over forty years, the series has become tiresome and stilted. His perchance of killing off interesting characters, which he probably thought would enhance and increase tension, generally detracted from the flow of the series. For example, in the case of his wife, landed with an author's splat rather than ratcheting up the intensity. Why, well simply stated, one of the first rules of 'authorship' is, "don't betray readers with superficial connivance at the cost of pacing or in the misplaced name of poorly chosen character development.
Enough, I'll leave it to you to discover while I move on to another less used formula prescriptive author.

EXCELLENT!!!

Exceptional read and the narrator remains the best in the business. The complexity of the plot line gave pause as it should and the beating peaks and valleys gave a complete fullness of the narration. Truly a joy. Thank you guys.

Rome, AD 68. Nero has committed suicide. One hundred years of imperial rule by the descendants of Julius Caesar has ended, and chaos rules. His successor, Galba, dismisses the incorruptible Germans of the Imperial Bodyguard for the crime of loyalty to the dead emperor. Ordering them back to their homeland, he releases a Batavi officer from a Roman prison to be their prefect. But Julius Civilis is not the loyal servant of empire that he seems.

Wasted read for my time
Revisado: 12-29-20
The narrator's too quick transition was as bothersome as his sameness of characte voices. Had wished the author had settled on a single protagonist to center the 'story.'

Historia
Thrilling, authentic, and action packed, this novel introduces soldier hero Marcus Valerius: a centurion stationed on Hadrian's Wall in the second century during a revolt against the Roman Empire. Marcus Valerius Aquila has scarcely landed in Britannia when he has to run for his life - condemned to dishonorable death by power-crazed emperor Commodus. The plan is to take a new name, serve in an obscure regiment on Hadrian's Wall, and lie low until he can hope for justice.

Of all the Roman Era, Legion centered novels I've read or listened to, this one is by far on the bottom my list. Why? The ugly "T" above says it all including a narrator as exciting as a buried Sparta.

From page one on the author gave us not one surprise and followed a well worn formula. The historical side of the equation was pleasantly informative however. Worth the read? As noted, a mixed bag.

Tender Branson, the last surviving member of the so-called Creedish Death Cult, is dictating his life story into the flight recorder of Flight 2039, cruising on autopilot at 39,000 feet somewhere over the Pacific Ocean. He is all alone in the airplane, which will crash shortly into the vast Australian outback. But before it does, he will unfold the tale of his journey from an obedient Creedish child and humble domestic servant to an ultra-buffed, steroid-and-collagen-packed media messiah.

Set up a suicide watch!
Revisado: 01-06-12
This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?
If you just on the edge of deciding if you are going to kill yourself or not, listen to the first 20 pages and your next trip is off the bridge.
What was most disappointing about Chuck Palahniuk’s story?
No hint of hope in those first 20 pages.
How did the narrator detract from the book?
The narrator did a good job. My negative view is directed at the author.
What character would you cut from Survivor?
The POV, first person character.
Any additional comments?
I just couldn't go on after listening to the first 20 pages. It was just too morbid; a real turn-off pager. There is no defense of this type of story line. Even starting with the plane and setting up the reader to find out about what happened to that character didn't work. After the first pages, you are hoping that the character does himself in even sooner and the hell with waiting for the plane. The writing itself was passable, but nothing to ever consider rising a purchase with this author again. Sorry, fella, but it was just too much of a turn-off.
