The second book in a series often doesn't live up to the promise of the 1st one. This was predictable and formulaic. Hopefully the next one is better.

Maybe Cartmel's skills as a script doctor could be put to better use. I'm hoping the next in the series cuts down on the repetition of facts in evidence. Such as [a person walks into a room holding a book] person #1: "What's that?" person #2: "What?" #1 "In your hand" #2 "Oh you mean this?" #1 "Yes that." #2 "Oh. Its a book." I'm sure that plays well in a TV episode, especially if both characters are mind-alteringly beautiful, hip and sexy, but it's tedious in a book. Better editing would yield a better story, told in 11 hours.

Cartmel introduces us to the wonderful world of the audiophile, which isn't too far different from a bibliophile's. Searching for a mint pressing of old vinyl isn't that far from seeking a rare book. We've all been in bookshops that are similar to the record shops Cartmel creates, so we should be able to relate. Audio is just the same. *And* it has equipment!

I may try the next in the series... it'll depend on whether I miss the characters enough.

Repetitive Romance with a Touch of Crime

Galbraith needs an editor. I understand this book is over 650 pages in hardback. There's enough story for 400. There's very little crime fiction in this book, the preponderance is romance. Even the romance gets stale after a while. Galbraith sets up several situations and introduces side characters that go nowhere and don't contribute to the story. Any number of authors could have interwoven these multiple plots without getting bogged down with romance that doesn't rise above the level of teenage angst, especially in a book of this length. I looked forward to this book. Next time I'll wait and read a few reviews before I purchase.

Any additional comments?

I hated this book the first time I listened to it. I put it aside and only when I was stuck for something to listen to did I go back. I still hate the way the author writes, changing a well known phrase with another word in an effort to dress it up. It just grates and pulls me out of the story.

But once the action gets going there's no stopping it. Bombs, explosions, high-tech ordinance, supernatural marksmanship and heros that don't feel pain. What's not to like?

What made the experience of listening to Involuntary Witness the most enjoyable?

A trend in crime fiction seems to be endless musings over simple details of life. Carofiglio goes down that path, too. Yet he makes these musings meaningful rather than pulling you out of the story by wondering what polishing every little detail has to do with moving the story forward. Guido is a man who lives a flawed existance and still manages. I enjoyed being introduced to his world. And the crime in question is topical. I'd have rated it 4.5 stars overall if that was possible.

What about Sean Barrett???s performance did you like?

I've listened to several books by Sean Barrett. His voice and reading truly adds to this story. His sense of worldliness comes through turning what could be a whiny yarn into musings of a man who has lived a full yet flawed life.

Lose the Music

Total
4 out of 5 stars

Revisado: 10-10-05

My low score is for the audio production. Music swells and fades between chapter breaks and it can be distracting and annoying. Sometimes, depending on where you are lisening to the book, the ambient noise in addition to the music can drown out the narration, making you have to scroll back to hear the story once the noise has stopped, suspending your involvement in the story. The producers should be aware that the listener isn't always in a locale where one can hang on every word.

Otherwise the story is vintage Connelly, full of twists and turns that keep you riveted.
