Historia
In this brilliant book, Isabel Wilkerson gives us a masterful portrait of an unseen phenomenon in America as she explores, through an immersive, deeply researched narrative and stories about real people, how America today and throughout its history has been shaped by a hidden caste system, a rigid hierarchy of human rankings. Beautifully written, original, and revealing, Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents is an eye-opening story of people and history, and a reexamination of what lies under the surface of ordinary lives and of American life today.

Parenting can be such an overwhelming job that it's easy to lose track of where you stand on some of the more controversial subjects at the playground (What if my kid likes to rough house - isn't this ok as long as no one gets hurt? And what if my kid just doesn't feel like sharing?). In this inspiring and enlightening book, Heather Shumaker describes her quest to nail down "the rules" to raising smart, sensitive, and self-sufficient kids.

Priceless Message for Parents
Revisado: 09-28-21
My family has been fortunate enough to experience the School for Young Children first hand throughout the preschool years of both of our sons. Heather's book stays true to the SYC philosophy and the narration adds to the modeling of examples in this book. If you are someone who wants to honor your kiddos, model healthy attachment and emotional regulation as well as open communication, this book is for you!!! I can't recommend this book enough. It's been over a decade since my kids were at SYC and this early childhood approach has is still yielding positive results for our kids!

Historia
In her mesmerizing fourth work of fiction, Sue Monk Kidd takes an audacious approach to history and brings her acclaimed narrative gifts to imagine the story of a young woman named Ana. Raised in a wealthy family with ties to the ruler of Galilee, she is rebellious and ambitious, with a brilliant mind and a daring spirit. She engages in furtive scholarly pursuits and writes narratives about neglected and silenced women. Ana is expected to marry an older widower, a prospect that horrifies her. An encounter with 18-year-old Jesus changes everything.

Beautiful story of the power of women
Revisado: 09-02-21
There were a few parts that felt a little inaccurate to the time and place but all and all, this was a very compelling story. As a woman, it felt validating to here a story about Jesus that explored what sort of intimate relationships he may have had and the equality and respect he likely would have had with the women in his life. The main character honors the value of the feminine aspects of a higher power, not as a threat to the masculine God but as part of the same whole that is often undervalued. The narrator was enjoyable to listen to as well and this added to the books resonance.

Awkwardly worded and difficult to follow
Revisado: 07-02-21
I couldn't finish this book. The wording was so strange that I couldn't understand what the author was trying to say. It sounds like it was written by someone who does speak English fluently; that or there is some glitch with a robotic narrator. I really don't know how this got all the 5 ratings. It makes me wonder if Audible faked the reviews.

good nuggets of wisdom
Revisado: 06-10-21
There are gems of wisdom throughout this talk. The examples seem kind of antiquated and stereotypical but if the reader can put that aside, there is very insightful information from someone with both personal and professional experience with long term committed relationships. Part 3 was a little cringy but stick with it bc Part 4 is really interesting!

English anthropologist Andrew Bankson has been alone in the field for several years, studying the Kiona river tribe in the territory of New Guinea. Haunted by the memory of his brothers' deaths and increasingly frustrated and isolated by his research, Bankson is on the verge of suicide when a chance encounter with colleagues, the controversial Nell Stone and her wry and mercurial Australian husband, Fen, pulls him back from the brink. Not a fan
Revisado: 05-04-21
In all honesty, I couldn't get through it. The narration was syrupy and the story was not interesting. Also, there was a part were the main character references a "hermaphroditic" statue and refers to it as disgusting- so insensitive. In another part, a dark-skinned female slave who had presumably impregnated by rape, is spoken of as running away and "abandoning" her child with no concern for how she was being treated.

Historia
Every day we experience the uncertainty, risks, and emotional exposure that define what it means to be vulnerable or to dare greatly. Based on 12 years of pioneering research, Dr. Brené Brown dispels the cultural myth that vulnerability is weakness and argues that it is, in truth, our most accurate measure of courage. Brown explains how vulnerability is both the core of difficult emotions like fear, grief, and disappointment, and the birthplace of love, belonging, joy, empathy, innovation, and creativity.
