If you want to understand John Fetzer

If you want to understand John Fetzer, specifically, then this a great book. If you want to understand the culture of 80s and 90s New Age / Spiritualism, particularly of a midwestern variety, this is also a great book for that. At times this felt cultish, and at times scientific, but pushing the boundaries of science. At times the story seemed to lose connection with reality, and at times it appeared to capture an understanding of the universe that few people on this planet even dare to explore. If you’re upset with the bounded constraints of traditional religion, you’ll like this book. If you enjoy exploring alternative things (culture, healing, planes of existence, etc.) then you’ll like this book. If you’re hyper-rational and only believe what you can concretely know, you will probably not like this book. I read it as a historical chronicling of one man’s pursuit to understand himself, his spirituality, the universe, as well as to be understood by the world, and it was a very good book for that intent.

A really important topic. Quite well researched, and I really enjoyed listening to the multiple voices included, from several different backgrounds and areas of the country. If I have one criticism it is that this is not a millennial issue. Most of what the writer describes also applies to the Forgotten Generation (Gen X), and probably more. The focus on millennials makes me feel invisible while also burned out.

I kept waiting for this book to reach the level of the author's last work, "Give and Take". I really like that book. The conversations in this one were very good. The last conversation was well worth the wait. But, I feel that the author placed too much importance on the power of story to convey a concept. An interview is not the same thing as a story. A great story is like a great comedy act, reworked, refined, and polished over time. An interview is more like improv comedy. It is never going to have the same level of polish and impact. The interviews were hard to follow at times. I have also become very suspicious of “availability bias“. Too many times when we interview people who succeeded, we get examples of what help them succeed, not what can help others succeed. This book felt way too much like that. Adam Grant's previous book knew this very well and presented the data and the stories very well, which is why I was surprised that he did not do enough of that with these interviews. That’s why this audio feels like a step on the way to a book. I am glad that it was a free monthly audible original release. And I do, however, look forward to reading any book that may come out of this by Adam Grant.

A really good story. Fantastic insights! A great place to find a lot of modern leadership techniques in one place. For some industries this will be revolutionary. The only reason I did not give this five stars is because for some industries this is a confirmation of the evolution that we have already gone through, just in a new place. I do not wish to diminish the power of what he was able to accomplish, though, In such a difficult culture as in the military.

What worries me about this book is that the real work required in implementing this kind of recommended program is covered in three words, “Six months later...“ This book is told in a narrative form about a fictional person in a fictional company dealing with a fictional situation. In contrast to books such as “The Goal“ or “The Phoenix Project“, this does not convey a real life situation, but attempts to describe a dream scenario that the author hopes you can bring about trying these ideas. Being a person who coaches people on a daily basis on how to introduce positive psychology in the workplace, it isn’t done by passing out cards with five rules on them. These are great ideas to used personally on self analysis, but is not a system to be rolled out at a company.

A very important book! The layout of the book is a little lost in audio version, as most of it is broken down one state per chapter. In print I noticed my friends could pick a chapter based on state and read. Going straight through was a little repetitive at times, and it's super important to get to the last three chapters which capture the core learning of the writer. So if you get bored, skip to the last three chapters!

65% biography of Steve Case. 35% a great case for understanding why government is going to play a much larger role in the next wave of technology advancements.

This is the research I wish I could do. My thanks to Gary Taubes! Lays out the case, and the history, and tells you exactly how your body works, so you can make your own choices.
