Matheson has the power to construct a plausible reality, set up our expectations, and then put the pedal to the metal and run us down. We are caught in the headlights, unnerved and frozen, until the inevitable strikes, and we've been dragged a quarter mile down the road. Then he turns around for another pass. The most memorable stories: the one about the guy who gets angry all the time; the one about the bed-ridden lady (excellent reader!); and the one about the new guy in the neighborhood.

This is the best non-fiction book I have experienced. The story is in turns funny, heart-breaking, terrifying, and encouraging. The author has a tremendous ability to present facts and events in a non-judgemental way, but simultaneously, to draw in the audience and reveal to us the deeper meaning of what was going on. The events are extreme, beyond anything most of us will ever endure, but the author and narrator combine to create an experience that I feel I have shared.

The narrator is probably the best in the business; his voice is recognizable from all of the major documentaries on TV. Like the author, his understated delivery frees the listener to experience the story.

As for the story itself, it is amazing. I don't think there is anyone who can listen to this audio book and not be in awe of Louis and his incredible life, and how he ends up. I have listened to a couple hundred audiobooks, but this one made me a better person. Get it for yourself.

This is one of the best books I've read or heard. The narrator expertly evokes the powerful emotions of fear, agony, and revenge that the author so brilliantly penned. The crafting of the tale (and the tales within the tale) is very clever and nuanced. The listener is drawn into the time and place of the action and then swept away by the engulfing currents of horror and rage felt by Frankenstein and his monster. The vivid descriptions of the benighted landscapes, humane (and inhumane) characters, and horrifying murders are unparalleled. I recommend this recording over any horror flick, if you are looking for an intelligent horror story that will stay with you for the rest of your life.
