The planet of Kiln is where the tyrannical Mandate keeps its prison colony, and for inmates the journey there is always a one-way trip. One such prisoner is Professor Arton Daghdev, xeno-ecologist and political dissident. Soon after arrival he discovers that Kiln has a secret. Humanity is not the first intelligent life to set foot there. In the midst a ravenous, chaotic ecosystem are the ruins of a civilization, but who were the vanished builders and where did they go?

Historia
When unforeseen circumstances during an innovative—and unsanctioned—commercial asteroid-mining mission leave two crew members stranded, those who make it back must engineer a rescue, all while navigating a shifting web of global political alliances and renewed Cold War tensions. With Earth governments consumed by the ravages of climate change and unable to take the risks necessary to make rapid progress in space, the crew must build their own next-gen spacecraft capable of mounting a rescue in time for the asteroid's next swing by Earth.

A promising sequel ruined
Revisado: 07-02-23
I was looking forward to this after recently rereading the first book in the series. Delta V had a few references to climate change but nothing over the top, just a nod to the prevailing orthodoxy. This book however, is packed full of top tier doomsday cult scaremongering. Suarez appears to have fallen for the most hysterical and least scientifically sound climate predictions. One more book in my library ruined by commie gobbledygook.

That is, until Jamie makes a delivery to an old acquaintance, Tom, who works at what he calls “an animal rights organization”. Tom’s team needs a last-minute grunt to handle things on their next field visit. Jamie, eager to do anything, immediately signs on. What Tom doesn't tell Jamie is that the animals his team cares for are not here on Earth. Not our Earth, at at least. In an alternate dimension, dinosaur-like creatures named Kaiju roam a warm and human-free world.

Picks a side on every conspiracy theory
Revisado: 09-27-22
I was enjoying it until they got to the point where he tells us which of all the current alternative theories about the nature of our world are true and which are false. Seems like a dumb choice for a lightweight book like this because you're guaranteed to annoy 80% of your audience. This is the kind of mistake you only make when you live in a bubble in which every one of your friends holds exactly the same political views as you. Weak.

It dawned on me one day that most of the scare stories in the media today are based on things that are either invisible, like CO2 and radiation, or very remote, like polar bears and coral reefs. Thus, the average person cannot observe and verify the truth of these claims for themselves. They must rely on activists, the media, politicians, and scientists - all of whom have a huge financial and/or political interest in the subject - to tell them the truth.

Historia
An AI overseer and a human crew arrive on a distant planet to salvage an ancient UN starship. The overseer is unhappy. The crew, well, they're certainly no A-team. Not even a C-team on the best of days. And worse? Urmahon Beta, the planet, is at the ass-end of nowhere. Everybody expects this to be a long, ugly, and thankless job. Then it all goes disastrously wrong. What they thought was an uninhabited backwater turns out to be anything but empty.

Not original, bad narrator choice
Revisado: 03-19-21
I have enjoyed Nathan Fillion as a TV actor and he has a good reading voice, but he is a terrible choice to narrate an audio book. He is far too dramatic to maintain the consistent emphasis and volume level that is required for comfortable listening. Stop acting and read the book please. He's probably too famous to take direction from the people who put out this book.
When they say that this book is "perfectly crafted for sci-fi fans of The Martian, Red Dwarf, and We Are Legion (We Are Bob)," they mean that it is a straight ripoff with no original ideas. I am a fan of all three but I thought this was thin, weak, dumb and confused. Not recommended.
It doesn't help that the author is one of those global elite hangers on that would probably love to shove all of us into machine consciousnesses. Probably written for him by some hack. Real sci fi authors do not take their inspiration from cheesy tv shows and books that were only written 5 minutes ago.

If you've wondered how we did not see the economic collapse coming, Ha-Joon Chang knows the answer: We didn't ask what they didn't tell us about capitalism. This is a lighthearted book with a serious purpose: to question the assumptions behind the dogma and sheer hype that the dominant school of neoliberal economists-the apostles of the freemarket-have spun since the Age of Reagan.

Revisado: 01-27-20
23 tried old straw men you've heard over and over again. As far as I can tell, there is not one original thought in this book. The first chapter entirely refutes the premise of the book. Every question is begged, every refutation is simply an empty assertion. History is ignored, facts are swept under the rug. If you want to understand what happened in '08, read Meltdown by Tom Woods, which smashed this book before it was even written.

Good story but. ..
Revisado: 05-31-18
this guy just can't write. The story is good and I listened all the way to the end of the third book, but I wish I hadn't. This is the worst written story I have ever read. Almost every other word in this series is redundant, unnecessary, tautological and not needed. Not every verb needs an adverb, not every noun needs an adjective. The dialogue is extremely clunky and unnatural. I thought it would get better but it doesn't. If you've ever read a good book, this is not for you. If you're 12 and never read a book before then you won't know any better. Note to the author, if you're going to include economics in your book, read Economics in One Lesson first or you'll come off as a complete knob.

Epic story buried under pile of steaming socialism
Revisado: 08-09-17
TLDR, Bernie Bros will love this book.
The 100 biggest welfare queens in the history of our species travel to Mars, with trillions of dollars of equipment plundered from the hard working people of Earth, to rule over it as their own private fiefdom. While living in the lap of luxury, paid for by the hard work of others, they group together to heap scorn on those same working stiffs. They continue sucking on the teat of their governments, remaining completely ignorant of the work which had to be done to pay for their holiday, droning on endlessly about the need to use resources efficiently, while having no idea of the function of profits. The author is very knowledgeable about Mars, but has obviously not bothered to read about any of the groups which actually tried to start socialist commonwealths in remote lands. *Spoiler alert* they all quickly instituted private property and free trade or starved to death.
Concepts the author is completely wrong about:
Capitalism
Profit
Investment
Employment
Sustainability
Economics
Justice
Fairness
Malthusianism
etc etc
