Historia
No one knows us quite the same way as the men and women who sit beside us in department meetings and crowd the office refrigerator with their labeled yogurts. Every office is a family of sorts, and the Chicago ad agency Joshua Ferris brilliantly depicts in his debut novel is family at its strangest and best. The characters in Then We Came to an End cope with a business downturn in the time-honored way: through gossip, secret romance, elaborate pranks, and increasingly frequent coffee breaks.

Historia
Welcome to Black Spring, the seemingly picturesque Hudson Valley town haunted by the Black Rock Witch, a seventeenth century woman whose eyes and mouth are sewn shut. Muzzled, she walks the streets and enters homes at will. She stands next to children's bed for nights on end. Everybody knows that her eyes may never be opened or the consequences will be too terrible to bear.

A great listen for Halloween
Revisado: 10-20-18
This was a compelling ghost story. Gets a bit slow toward the end of part 1, but picks up with a flourish in part 2. Only negatives are the way characters are built up only to be summarily discarded in part 2.

Wonderfully voice acted
Revisado: 04-18-18
The voice actors on the book were really top notch and helped to bring out the main storyline. Really enjoyed this ecological sci fi series.

Historia
When Norm Macdonald, one of the greatest stand-up comics of all time, was approached to write a celebrity memoir, he flatly refused, calling the genre “one step below instruction manuals.” Norm then promptly took a two-year hiatus from stand-up comedy to live on a farm in northern Canada. When he emerged he had under his arm a manuscript, a genre-smashing book about comedy, tragedy, love, loss, war, and redemption. When asked if this was the celebrity memoir, Norm replied, “Call it anything you damn like.”

It’s not what you think it is - it’s better!
Revisado: 02-04-18
The book starts off pretty plausible, but then the stories become wilder and zanier and you begin to realize that this is all a fun work of fiction. Very well done and ably performed by he great Norm Macdonald.

Tim and his friends find out the hard way that you shouldn't question the game master, and you shouldn't make fun of his cape. One minute, they're drinking away the dreariness of their lives, escaping into a fantasy game and laughing their asses off. The next minute, they're in a horse-drawn cart surrounded by soldiers pointing crossbows at them.

Kind of a dumb story, but will some real laughs
Revisado: 01-06-18
There wasn’t much in the way of story here. Several friends get sucked into a game of “DND” by a mysterious stranger and get into some amusing situations as they try to learn the rules of he game and figure out their character abilities. The downside is that there wasn’t much plot here and the story kind of wrapped up abruptly without ever having given the characters a goal. Laughs come especially through the superb voice acting that really brings each character and it’s quirks to life.

Takes a while to get going, but worth it in the end
Revisado: 11-20-17
Wasn’t sure if I’d like this book after listening for a couple of hours. At first, there’s not much conflict or foreshadowing as the author establishes character relationships. It’s hard to see where the story is going. It quickly becomes clear, though, so stick with it for a superb finish. The voice actor does a wonderful job with the various characters and accents.

Historia
In a steel-and-lead-encased bunker 20 feet below the basement level of his house, a soldier waits for his final orders. On the surface, a plague ravages the planet, infecting over 90% of the populace. The bacterium burrows through the brain, destroying all signs of humanity and leaving behind little more than base, prehistoric instincts. The infected turn into hyper-aggressive predators, with an insatiable desire to kill and feed. Someday soon, the soldier will have to open the hatch to his bunker, and step out into this new wasteland, to complete his mission....

Serviceable zombie/survival story but not a lot new
Revisado: 09-28-17
The author does a great job at keeping the momentum going, but there’s not enough character development for me to feel that invested in the story and characters. For example, the kid that Lee rescues in the beginning of the book and who had an interesting back story, is rarely mentioned after his key scene even though he’s along for the ride for the second half of the book. I enjoyed this one but definitely won’t be investing in the rest of the series.
There are also a lot of concepts borrowed from other similar books: the fast not undead zombies (28 days later), pack/herd behavior (Cell).

We were prepared for an earthquake. We had a flood plan in place. We could even have dealt with zombies. Probably. But no one expected the end to be quite so…sticky…or strawberry scented. Yahtzee Croshaw ( Mogworld, Zero Punctuation Reviews) returns to audiobooks with a follow-up to his smash-hit debut: Jam, a dark comedy about the one apocalypse no one predicted.

A rare miss for Croshaw
Revisado: 08-02-17
I immensely enjoyed Mogworld and Will Save the Galaxy for Food, so I was eager to pick up Jam to see what else was in store from this usually fun to read author/narrator. Jam was rather disappointing. The premise was fun, and there are plenty of interesting characters, but the plot never seems to really go in any direction and the interesting characters are written out as soon as you get to know them or completely change their demeanor toward the end. The end was also disappointing. No real conclusion and it didn't feel like the time invested in listening had any payoff at all. Since (I think) this was one of his earlier books, I encourage readers to check out later works where the author hones his storytelling and narrating toward hilarious ends - especially Mogworld.

Great performances, but there weren't a lot of surprises here. The banana slicer and Haribo sugar free gummy bears reviews have been Internet famous for some time. It still was a cute mashup of various product reviews and some were very clever. Could have done without some of the songs.

Not your usual survival story
Revisado: 07-05-17
I love post-apocalyptic stories and was eager to listen to this one. The problem with this book is that there is very little conflict or real hardship faced by the characters and it tends to get a bit boring as a result. This is a tale of highly competent and - for the most part -likeable and resilient people who band together after a flu pandemic. While there are stories of personal tragedy, almost everyone moves past it quickly and are eager to start their new lives. Any negative characters quickly disappear from the story without much fanfare. Towards the end, the reader has to endure repeats of the same conversations and topics as new characters enter the group and need to be brought up to speed. It all gets a bit tiring toward the end as the characters move toward the inevitable conclusion.
