Historia
It was the end of World War II. FDR's New Deal had redefined American politics. Taxes were at an all-time high. The bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki had created a fear of total annihilation. The rise of secret government agencies and sanctions on business had many watching their backs. America's sense of freedom was diminishing... and many were desperate to take that freedom back.

This is by far my favorite videogame novel
Revisado: 06-01-23
It serves beautifully as a prequel expanding your knowledge on Rapture and the Bioshock games (with even a little glimpse at Bioshock 2 I hadn't caught reading it the first time as I knew nothing about it) from the point of view of several key characters on both sides of the fence. I really enjoyed the Audio narration as well.
There are audio files in the game that appear word for word here in the novel which is something I loved. We got to see their mindset leading up to making the file and why they even were in the first place. Actually that was a common complaint I saw, that the files were in the book at all, so while it's a big hit for me I understand why it wouldn't be for other.
Another couple of big complaints I saw were about the portrayal of Andrew Ryan himself and the audiobook narration. For Ryan it seems a lot of reader found him to be a characature and not very human. Weirdly enough I had the opposite. I don't know if it was from reading it the month it came out and then again here in the middle of 2023, but Ryan felt spot on. A billionaire "self made" man that can't stand his government so went off and effectively made his own country to run it his way. He reads, feels, and very much is a Politician. He'd never call himself that, and he'd be highly offended, but he is and is highly hypocritical in the way he acts, speaks, and thinks. I see people like that daily in the news now. Talk just like him, and are just as hypocritical, speaking in endless circles when they get caught instead of answering.
For the audiobook narrator there were a lot of comments on his accents for characters being cartoonish and over the top. Maybe it's because I've been listening to audiobooks exclusively for years now, it's just easier for me, that I didn't find him over the top at all. The accents came and went over character but overall I didn't find them distracting. Sander Cohen, a notorious character, wasn't even nearly as campy as I expected based on the Audible reviews. He didn't have the best voices for each character but I didn't find it a fault.

I just didn't like it
Revisado: 02-01-23
As a romantic retelling I expected most of what I got from this novel, and while I did expect things to go certain way I have to admit I was very disappointed with this book by the time the end of it came. There just felt like too much going on without enough book to fill it.
I don't think I could return to these particular characters, as I don't really like them after everything. The world building we got was very interesting and I might give a chance to another book but also I'm not really keen to jump into one.
For me, the moment Arlo changed his mind and did a 180 on his situation was when I started not enjoying the experience. The first half painted an interesting picture the last half didn't complete.
the performance was fine but Incan't tell if all the growling in the audio was from the narrator or Audible's messed up app experience. either way it took me out

Enjoyable detective series
Revisado: 03-31-21
I wanted to rate these 4 stars but if my review says 1 I don't know why. The stars are red and won't allow me to edit them? Hopefully I can figure that out so it can be fixed.
I got this set on a whim from a sale and ended up thoroughly enjoying all three books with one general exception.
The books are out of order which the reviews totally warned me about and I rudely ignored. it should go The Narrows, Echo Park, and then The Overlook. Echo Park (my favorite of the books) should be second, but it plays first. This ended up really hurting my perception of a certain character who has a strong opinion at the end of Echo Park that nearly ruined my experience with The Narrows because I was so angry with them afterward! Especially when the real first book showed them doing the exact same type of behavior they were mad at the MC for doing. it didn't ruin the books for me, but boy was I mad.

Historia
It is freezing in the churchyard, even before the dead arrive. Every year, Blue Sargent stands next to her clairvoyant mother as the soon-to-be dead walk past. Blue herself never sees them - not until this year, when a boy emerges from the dark and speaks directly to her. His name is Gansey, and Blue soon discovers that he is a rich student at Aglionby, the local private school. Blue has a policy of staying away from Aglionby boys. Known as Raven Boys, they can only mean trouble. But Blue is drawn to Gansey, in a way she can't entirely explain.

wonderful
Revisado: 11-23-20
I adored this. I never heard of this series while it debuted, but recently in 2020 after seeing fanart pop up on artist pages. I'm pleased with the writing and the story itself. I highly recommend this series to any fans of magic themes.
Patton's performance is wonderful, the times he uses for each main character are easy to follow lending the main cast their own voices. toward the end I could not stop listening, I was so charmed.
