Historia
In a world devastated by nuclear war with humanity on the edge of extinction, aliens finally make contact. They rescue those humans they can, keeping most survivors in suspended animation while the aliens begin the slow process of rehabilitating the planet. When Lilith Iyapo is "awakened", she finds that she has been chosen to revive her fellow humans in small groups by first preparing them to meet the utterly terrifying aliens, then training them to survive on the wilderness that the planet has become. But the aliens cannot help humanity without altering it forever.

Master management of the conflict.

There are a lot of books out there with an interesting premise. There are a lot of books out there with interesting characters. There are a lot of books out there with gripping writing that immediately pulls you into the story and never lets you go.
This book has all three.
I'm starting to realize that one of my favorite things in a story is reasonably intelligent characters who are doing the best that they can with a crazy situation. They'll make mistakes and some of them might have even been avoidable. But when they make a mistake you understand the character enough that can see why that made the choices that they did.
Lilith, the main character of this novel, is probably one of my favorite protagonists for these reasons. She's intelligent and level-headed as they come.
Even the Oankali, the alien race in the book, fit into this mold. I think that's what makes them so relatable and so interesting. Although they are superior to human beings in every way, even with their vast knowledge they still make choices that seem right at the time but later turned out to be mistakes.
I think that's what I love most about this book. That the trauma and the tragedy seem both avoidable and entirely inevitable at the same time. I think that's a mark of fantastic writing.

Historia
A world with no hunger, no disease, no war, no misery: Humanity has conquered all those things and has even conquered death. Now Scythes are the only ones who can end life - and they are commanded to do so in order to keep the size of the population under control. Citra and Rowan are chosen to apprentice to a scythe - a role that neither wants. These teens must master the "art" of taking life, knowing that the consequence of failure could mean losing their own.

Thoroughly Entertaining

It's been a while since a book pulled me in this quickly. I've seen people post some negative reviews about how some of the plot points are a bit contrived and cliched. That's probably true. But once I started reading, I didn't care. This isn't a book that will surprise you with all of its clever plot twists and subverted conventions. At the same time, I wouldn't go so far as saying it is the book equivalent of a popcorn movie.
Either way, I had a blast reading it.

Historia
Breakfast of Champions (1973) provides frantic, scattershot satire and a collage of Vonnegut's obsessions. His recurring cast of characters and American landscape was perhaps the most controversial of his canon; it was felt by many at the time to be a disappointing successor to Slaughterhouse-Five, which had made Vonnegut's literary reputation.

Twelve Pointed Asterisk Drawing
Revisado: 01-12-16
Any additional comments?
Best part is John Malkovich's description of the drawings. I did that thing where you are listening to something funny in a quiet room and you laugh, but then when the laugh is half-way out you realize that you are in a quiet room and so you stifle the laugh, and the combined pressure turns into a loud laugh-sneeze that blows snot out of your nose and coats everything in your immediate vicinity.

Why do only a few people get to say "I love my job?" It seems unfair that finding fulfillment at work is like winning a lottery; that only a few lucky ones get to feel valued by their organizations, to feel like they belong. Imagine a world where almost everyone wakes up inspired to go to work, feels trusted and valued during the day, then returns home feeling fulfilled. This is not a crazy, idealized notion. Today, in many successful organizations, great leaders are creating environments in which people naturally work together to do remarkable things.

Entertaining and informative
Revisado: 02-09-15
Simon Sinek has the uncommon ability to weave narrative and distill complex arguments in a way that is engaging and thought provoking.
Even if you don't agree with everything he says you have to concede that he has a valid point.

Which scene was your favorite?
"There Will Come Soft Rains" is a classic story.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Absolutely
Any additional comments?
Great bit of Sci-fi. Bradbury is a master craftsman weaving together multiple narratives into one whole picture of the planet mars.
