Historia
It seems like any other day. You wake up, drink a cup of coffee, and head out. But today, when you open your front door, waiting for you is a small wooden box. The contents of this mysterious box tells you the exact number of years you will live. From suburban doorsteps to desert tents, every person on every continent receives the same box. In an instant, the world is thrust into a collective frenzy. Where did these boxes come from? What do they mean? Is there truth to what they promise?

Thought provoking
Revisado: 06-17-24
The framework of story was interesting and thought provoking. The narrator was clear and had great vocal variety for the story. I thought some author? biases showed through the story and with little story or justification for the bias. The bias is not a bad thing but because I didn't agree and there was no new perspective or explanation, it did impact the entertainment of the story to me

Retreat
Revisado: 12-02-22
The narrator's performance added to the story for me. A young woman travels to her father's home village to understand his leaving. She meets a villager who tells the story of her father and unravels a different and richer perspective. Many pearls of wisdom are dropped along the way. If I was reading this book, it would have lots of highlights for phrases to ponder further. The book started slow for me but then I had trouble stepping away from it. I took away a star for this, my trouble with sorting names and because I didn't always appreciate the daughter's part of the story. These ara all on me;I will definitely look for more books by the author and narrator. Thank you for sharing your talents! I would have loved to have listened to this book out camping or hiking. There are lots of things to reflect on.

Historia
Lydia Quixano Pérez lives in the Mexican city of Acapulco. She runs a bookstore. She has a son, Luca, the love of her life, and a wonderful husband who is a journalist. And while there are cracks beginning to show in Acapulco because of the drug cartels, her life is, by and large, fairly comfortable. When Lydia’s husband’s tell-all profile of Javier, the jefe of the newest drug cartel that has gruesomely taken over the city, is published, none of their lives will ever be the same.

Writer and narrator perfect match
Revisado: 10-11-22
Thw author is a talented story teller using many adjectives and adverbs that provoke all senses. The narrator made this even more rich with her pace and inflections. I enjoyed the story and continued to look forward throughout the telling. I would love to hear a group respond to how the title American Dirt impacts the overall story.

Historia
Texas, 1921. A time of abundance. The Great War is over, the bounty of the land is plentiful, and America is on the brink of a new and optimistic era. But for Elsa Wolcott, deemed too old to marry in a time when marriage is a woman’s only option, the future seems bleak. Until the night she meets Rafe Martinelli. By 1934, the world has changed; millions are out of work and drought has devastated the Great Plains. Elsa must make an agonizing choice: fight for the land she loves or leave it behind and go west, to California, in search of a better life for her family.

Conversation
Revisado: 04-05-21
This books creates entry points into conversation around so many topics to include dustbowl, immigration, parent child dynamic, what courage is, suppression as an individual and as economic class or gender and how politics plays into that, outward implications of self talk, grit and when it becomes a hindrance,...and more. Then at the end is an author note about what is happening in the world as she was putting book out and an insightful conversation including the author and reader. The combination of all these things made this an enjoyable and value added read for me.

Historia
The irascible A. J. Fikry, owner of Island Books - the only bookstore on Alice Island - has already lost his wife. Now his most prized possession, a rare book, has been stolen from right under his nose in the most embarrassing of circumstances. The store itself, it seems, will be next to go. One night upon closing, he discovers a toddler in his children’s section with a note from her mother pinned to her Elmo doll: I want Maya to grow up in a place with books and among people who care about such kinds of things. I love her very much, but I can no longer take care of her.

interesting and winding story of a book seller
Revisado: 07-27-17
I found this story easy to become involved in. Scott Brick is an excellent narrator with a hypnotic voice ( in a good way). AJ is a book store owner. The narrative wraps throughout his life and those around him. Not surprisingly, but definitely enjoyable, there are many references to books & quotes outside of this book.
SPOILER alert but may be useful for some: there are a couple car accidents, suicide, adoption, extramarital affairs, cursing,

Good family listen
Revisado: 03-27-16
Where does Collection rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
I have not listened to many short stories before and think I may enjoy listening more than reading them.
What did you like best about this story?
Between the narrator and the story, it was easy to get involved in the story and feel like we were there observing.
What about Evelyn Eibhlin’s performance did you like?
I think the narrator's tone and inflection really added to the story. It was easy to get lost in the story.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Yes but it ended too soon. My kids said they would rate it 5 stars but I wanted there to be a little more of a wrap up.
Any additional comments?
The story outlines a family visit to another family's home. The families have different financial situations. The story led to lots of good talking points for our family. Hearing that the stories are based loosely on true stories made me have more questions.
