I am richer, at 53, professionally (literature professor) and personally (last read Edith Hamilton in middle school) for having listened to this re-telling of the heroes stories. I had already listened to Mythos. Troy next!

Not since I read Edith Hamilton's renderings of these myths as a middle schooler have I been so enthralled by Greek mythology. I'm a middle-aged professor of the humanities now and will be using my revived (and new!) knowledge of the Greek myths in my teaching. Fry has done us a huge service by creating this engaging, enjoyable, humorous, and humane version of the Greek myths. Andbif you have'nt seen his Treaty of Westphalia skit, search YouTube ASAP and enjoy!

Incredible. I wish everyone I know would listen to this important book. Along with Abigail Shrier's _Irreversible Damage_, Helen Joyce's book has crystalized my unease with gender identity ideology into a coherent understandingvof the history of how we got here and the consequences of where we find ourselves. As a US university professor of the humanities, I am now more knowledgable about the gender identity ideology that permeates my workplace and am empowered to figure out my own beliefs about sex and gender outside the ideology that I'm being fed at work and in my "left" media diet. I can't recommend this well-researched and -written book highly enough. And it's such a delight to have the author read it. Joyce has a lovely voice and a nautral, not performative, reading style and is much, much better than many professional audiobook readers! I was sad when the book ended, which is not something I can always say at the end of an audiibook. In interviews, I've heard Joyce explain the hurdles in the publishing industry that she had to clear to get the book into print through a reputable publishing house AND the fact that no audio book agency would pick up the audio rights. Her son helped her record this book. Congrats to both. And a huge "thanks."

I highly recommend this important history. i have a much clearer understanding of the forces that led to the Holocaust. Having visited the US Holocaust museum in DC, Dachau, and Yad Vashem in Israel and having read several histories of the Shoah, I came to this book thinking I had pretty clear knowledge of what led up to the Shoah. However, I gained new insights from this book. Everyone should read it, particularly if you THINK you know the history of the Holocaust.

As others have noted, this is not only a history of the Silk Road(s). It is a history of the area of the world known as, and the rest of the world's engagement with, the "Silk Road." I got a nice refresher course on European/American colonialism in the Middle East, the Iran/Iraq war, and the Iran/Contra affair from the 1980s, for example, none if which I associated with the Silk Road, per se. I am in no position to speak about the lack of inclusion of China and India in this history, as others better equipped than me have noted. I'll take their word that there's more to the story on those fronts. The author does address China's rise in the conclusion, but the books publication date of 2015 means there's not a single criticism of China's ethnic cleansingvof the Uighars. The author validates China's crackdown on Muslim "terrorists" in the western provinces withoutvbatting an eye. again, 2015 perspectives. And the cloncluding thesis that the Silk Roads will rise again due to vast oil, natural gas, and coal reserves looks different in our 2021 Covid pandemic and climate change world. All in all, a valuable "read" (listen). I learned a lot. The voice reader contributed well, but was on the edge of overacting foreign accents. Unseemly, these days, for a British reader to puy on an Indian accent. And he does a terrible American accent. Comes out almost as Irish! Those American "R"s trip people up.

Informative and moving narratuve of a lesser-known element of WWII--escape systems from Vichy/occupied France into putative neutral Spain over the Pyrenees. As a scholar of mountains, I was especially intrigued by this harrowing tale. The reader got the job done without intruding into or distracting from the narrative.

Brilliant book. A history told through stories, so prepare to appreciate its storytelling qualities, but don't expect a straight "history." Not every story captured me, but the vast majority did, and I learned something from each and every one of them. And I surely know more about Paris than I did before. (I've listened to several histories of Paris, so I'm not a novice). One story in this collection is a script, with camera directions, for a "movie.", It's one of the most poignan and important in this impressive and creative history. If those last two adjectives strike you as oxymorons, I challenge you to give this book a chance. Now I'm longing for the "story history" of Rome, London, Venice, Moscow, Madrid, Barcelona, etc. Get busy, people!
