Historia
From an acclaimed Harvard professor and one of Time’s most influential people, this paradigm-shifting audiobook shows how almost everything we think we know about aging is wrong, offers a front-row seat to the amazing global effort to slow, stop, and reverse aging, and calls listeners to consider a future where aging can be treated.

An advertisement for Sinclair's Research
Revisado: 02-28-25
This book has some good information, but most of it is speculation on what would happen if we found a magic potion that allowed us to live longer. Sinclair's lab is working on it, but the potion hasn't been found yet.

Historia
When Michael Lewis first met him, Sam Bankman-Fried was the world’s youngest billionaire and crypto’s Gatsby. CEOs, celebrities, and leaders of small countries all vied for his time and cash after he catapulted, practically overnight, onto the Forbes billionaire list. Who was this rumpled guy in cargo shorts and limp white socks, whose eyes twitched across Zoom meetings as he played video games on the side?

A well-told nuanced story
Revisado: 10-16-24
The media likes to put Sam Bankman-Fried in a simple slot, a scam artist. The whole story is much more complex. Michael Lewis happenedd to be present while the tale was developing and got the inside scoop. The book originally appeared before SBF was sentenced. An extra chapter was added a year later. In the extra chapter, we learned that no one lost any money, but SBF still was sentences to 25 years with out the opportunity of parole. What a story.

First published in 1962, Silent Spring can single-handedly be credited with sounding the alarm and raising awareness of humankind's collective impact on its own future through chemical pollution. No other book has so strongly influenced the environmental conscience of Americans and the world at large.

Still a Must Read
Revisado: 10-16-24
I worked in the environmental lab field for most of my career and often heard about this book. In 2024, I finally took the time to listen to it. It's still great. The stories are well told and the science is well explained. Rachel Carson is still great. Take the time to listen to this book. You might get a longer life span in return.

An Important Book
Revisado: 10-16-24
We finally have a scientific way of tracing our blood line. Dr. Reich's lab should get an award for developing the technique. And now, his lab should get an award for having applied the technique to thousands of samples, from ancient Neanderthals to modern people. The stories that are generated should be taught to all of us to break down our tribalism. Everyone should read this book.

Highly Useful
Revisado: 10-12-24
This audible book works. Karen gets to your motivation center with her words and performance. Her personal approach gave me motivation to view each day's issues as opportunities to have fun. I'm laughing more and eating better. My listening library contains lots of biography, finance, and health titles. (like "Ben Franklin", "Going Infinite", and "How Not to Age") "Chronic Pleasure" breaks that mold. It's value lies at a fundamental level. Without appealing to religion or pseudoscience, it gives you techniques for enjoying the rest of your life. I'm amazed that an audible book can do that.

Historia
We've decided by consensus that consensus is good. In In Defense of Troublemakers, psychologist Charlan Nemeth argues that this principle is completely wrong: left unchallenged, the majority opinion is often biased, unoriginal, or false. It leads planes and markets to crash, causes juries to convict innocent people, and can quite literally make people think blue is green. In the name of comity, we embrace stupidity. We can make better decisions by embracing dissent. Dissent forces us to question the status quo, consider more information, and engage in creative decision-making.

Revisado: 03-20-24
Troublemakers are people that resist group thinking. This book summarizes a lot of research that shows how group thinking develops and how it is resisted. The studies are well selected and presented.

Historia
Jennifer Sey was on track to become the first woman CEO of Levi Strauss & Co. As the President of the Levi's brand, she was widely celebrated as a versatile and inspirational leader who had helped save the iconic brand from bankruptcy. Formerly a self-described "left of left of center" progressive, she was beloved as the embodiment of the company's "profits through principles" ethos.

Thank you Jennifer Sey
Revisado: 04-28-23
As a big consumer of medical literature, I was well aware of the lack of evidence for school closures and most of the tactics of the lockdown. This book skips the medical statistics and tells Jennifer Sey's personal story with emphasis on sociology and herd behavior. Jennifer Sey is the perfect person for this because she was the marketing manager of a "fashion" company. Part of the reason this book is so good is that it is her own personal story. Still, the themes will resonate with everyone, even older, white male liberals like me

I enjoyed the story, but wanted more science
Revisado: 02-09-23
Isaacson is a great author and this is an important story. I greatly enjoyed listening to it. That being said, I had misgivings that the story skipped a lot of important details while promulgating a rah-rah attitude for science and CRISPR. The general attitude of the story was that science will save us. It failed to mention ordinary epidemiology, medicine, and clinical trials. For instance, it is very enthusiastic for the PCR test labs that were created at Berkeley and Harvard, but fails to mention how they were validated. It fails to mention the Nobel-Prize-winning inventor of PCR that cautioned against using the PCR technique for disease diagnoses. The story is very enthusiastic about the mRNA vaccines but fails to mention the lack of validation. It fails to mention the Nobel-Prize-winning discover of HIV who cautioned against the mRNA vaccines. In skipping these facts, the book misleads the reader.

Historia
The bumper-sticker directive to ‘follow the science’ was actually an evasion of responsibility. It let people off the hook for their bad decisions in a crisis. Was New York Governor Cuomo’s executive order sending COVID-hospitalized patients back to nursing homes to infect other vulnerable nursing home patients ‘following the science’? Relative to the total nursing home population, Governor Cuomo contributed to a larger percentage of nursing-home deaths - especially when compared to the states without such a policy.
