Move along - no coherent story line to see here
Revisado: 04-10-25
If you enjoyed Book 1 as much as I did, sorry, maybe Book 3 will be better.
Subtitle for this volume should be Everybody dies at least once and we don't know why, but you can bet if there are any characters you get attached to, they will be dead by the end of the book. I shouldn't say the book has no story line, it has dozens of story lines but none of them make any sense. In short this volume is a string of random incoherent scenes, random decisions, baffling goals and planning, and irrelevant firefights. Did I mention the irrelevant firefights? Maybe the author is just throwing stuff against the wall to see if anything sticks so he can use it in the next book.

Historia
Captain Keyes is loved by the public but hated by Command. He captains the UHS Providence, an aging supercarrier and the last human ship not dependent on dark tech - technology humanity has used to rule over the galaxy since barely defeating the Ixa in the First Galactic War. Dominance has come at a cost. Over the decades, old allies have grown resentful, and when dark tech itself fails, Captain Keyes’ predictions start coming true: those old allies are now enemies.

hours of watching the bully win
Revisado: 02-21-25
I cant finish this book. Thinly disguised diatribe about corporate greed and control of government that pretty well matches some of our current globalist west problems. But thats not the problem. The ‘good guys/girls’ just keep on losing. Every scene for hour after hour is just failure after failure. I feel like Im watching the school yard bully just keep on pounding the weak and taking their lunch money and getting away with it over and over and over again! I read these things to get away from reality not just see more of the back stabbing politics and greed I can see in real life and the ‘bad guys’ perpetually winning. The story is depressing. Im guessing eventually the ‘good’ prevail but there are just too many hours of misery till you get there. Another thing this story is guilty of is something I have seen a lot of lately in all kinds of books but are really pronounced in this story. The characters are supposed to be professional naval officers, marines etc but they behave more like petulant middle schoolers. If you really like stories where the main characters are constantly beaten and demoralized and cant win no matter how hard they try, this might be a book for you. But I cant finish it.

Don't waste your credits
Revisado: 07-28-23
This may not be the worst book I have ever tried to read, but it's at least a really good contender for the honour. I never understand how books so bad can have all the good reviews they get. This is a book written for the school kid who really likes low quality TV Science Fiction shows. The plot doesn't make any sense. The behaviour of the characters is ridiculously unbelievable. The author either intentionally wrote this story for ten year olds, or he really doesn't know how things work and how people behave.

Colonel Joe Bishop made a promise and he's going to keep it; taking the captured alien starship Flying Dutchman back out. He doesn't agree when the UN decides to send almost 70 elite Special Operations troops, hotshot pilots, and scientists with him; the mission is a fool's errand he doesn't expect to ever return from. At least, this time, the Earth is safe, right? Not so much.

Not as good as book one. If you read book one this is pretty much more of the same. If you missed book one just be aware the series is not serious sci-fi but what I would call a comedy/parody of a space “opera”.

Historia
George Orwell was more than just a writer. He was a political and social sage who valued, above all else, individual freedom. His works aren’t just entertainment - they’re cautionary tales and red flags of warning. And if we ever hope to understand threats to freedom and how to stop them, we must learn from them. In these 24 lectures, learn how the man born as Eric Blair forged himself into a writer of international importance and renown.

One of the best of the Great Courses
Revisado: 12-01-21
WOW, I have dozens of the Great Courses and this is one of the very best I have read. The author brings Mr. Orwell to life in a way I have never seen any other author come close to accomplishing. If you have any interest in Mr. Orwell and his work, do not pass up this course. If you don't have much interest in Mr. Orwell and his work, do not pass up this course, this course will change your mind.

Less "Grey Man" and more "keystone kops"
Revisado: 03-03-20
I don't know where to start with this review. The story line was completely unbelievable. The characters' behaviours and reactions were ludicrous. I could not finish the book and gave up about the time the "hero" "McGyvered up" an IED from the teacup of gun powder of a couple dozen 9mm pistol cartridges disassembled and tossed in a shoe with the empty cartridges and primers and supposedly ignited by firing a 9mm round into the mess. Gunpowder burns. It does not explode stuffed in a shoe, even if you could get lucky and ignite it that way. That's just silly. Perhaps even more annoying was finding the "elite" grey man every few pages practically naked and running away. At his array of caches and safe houses he was able to re-equip from time to time, but somehow proceeded to lose his mountains of equipment within a few paragraphs and ending up naked in the snow with a pocket knife. Ok, I am exaggerating a bit, but not by much. I guess sooner or later in the story the grey man does go on the offensive, but by the time I gave up, I never saw him take the offensive even when fully equipped and with reasonable odds. He special talent seemed to be in losing his equipment and running away. I was really surprised and disappointed at how bad this book was after reading all the good reviews of this series.

Disappointing followup to Book One
Revisado: 02-25-20
I enjoyed book one in this series more than any new authors I have tried lately. I was really looking forward to Book Two. I guess Victor suffered brain damage and became incompetent and sloppy as a result of his injuries in Book One, because he was not the man he was in book one. Maybe the author was trying to do more in depth character development, sprinkle in a basket full of named characters so numerous that I couldn't keep track of who was who, and maybe spice up some plot lines, but it did not work for me. Victor seems to have just abandoned ALL his rules and basic cautions, and the book is a hodgepodge of failures and incompetence, really dumb decisions and inconceivable behaviours, and throughout most of the book I could almost hear the strains of Yakkity Sax playing in the background as another gun was dropped or another attempt at something ALMOST worked. I finally made it through the book by fast forwarding through a good bit of the worst parts. I have not decided if I will take a chance on book three or not. Maybe Victor's brain damage will heal before the next book. I really enjoyed Book One and wish this would have been as good.

Best book in this genre I've found in a long time!
Revisado: 02-22-20
This was my first experience with this author and I found this book to be pretty much exactly what I enjoy in this genre. This book was action from beginning to end. The author did not spend a lot of time on character development. He did not complicate things with an unending list of named characters and intricate plots, but that's not what I look for in these stories. If you are looking for action without a lot of the intricacies of relationships and endless political intrigues this book is a good choice. I'm looking forward to getting started with book 2.
