Historia
This is the story of the rise to national power of a desperately poor young man from the Texas Hill Country. The Path to Power reveals in extraordinary detail the genesis of the almost superhuman drive, energy, and ambition that set LBJ apart. It follows him from the Hill Country to New Deal Washington, from his boyhood through the years of the Depression to his debut as Congressman, his heartbreaking defeat in his first race for the Senate, and his attainment, nonetheless, at age 31, of the national power for which he hungered.

Truly Outstanding
Revisado: 11-05-14
What did you like best about this story?
This is how political biography should be done.
What does Grover Gardner bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
Perfect narration.
What’s the most interesting tidbit you’ve picked up from this book?
I loved learning about the personality and character of LBJ. Astonishingly ruthless.
Any additional comments?
If you love American history, you'll love this audiobook. I'm now into volume 3 of this series. When I started it, I didn't think it would hold my attention, but it grabbed me immediately and I was surprised to discover what a cliff hanger it was! There were times I just could not stop listening to see how things would turn out.
The sheer volume of research that went into this book is enough to give it five stars, but the riveting storytelling and perfect narration make it a rare gem.

Are you seeking a deeper understanding of consciousness? Are you interested in meditation or currently practicing meditation? The Buddha and the Quantum is about the connection between meditation and physics. Many books show parallels between consciousness and physics; a few of these attempt to explain consciousness in terms of the physics of everyday experience. This is the only book that explains physics and the everyday world in terms of consciousness alone.

Enlightening and engaging
Revisado: 10-24-12
If you could sum up The Buddha and the Quantum in three words, what would they be?
An enlightening and engaging perspective on consciousness and physics.
Any additional comments?
Few books deal well with physics and consciousness. The more spiritually oriented books tend to get the science wrong. The more scientifically oriented books can be hard for a non-scientist to follow. This book didn't have those issues. Very well done and I learned quite a bit.

Awful
Revisado: 04-23-12
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
I've generally enjoyed the Mitch Rapp books. They're not brilliant literature -- they're mindless "political suspense." They're usually entertaining enough to help pass the time in a cardio workout or a long commute. This one, however, was really BAD. I never finished part 1.
A lot of time was devoted to summarizing the plot of the previous book (which was good), excruciating details of people in one meeting after another, lots of explaining mid east political issues.... at the six hour mark, it was still all "set up" and no action.
Also, Mitch's girlfriend (who of course doesn't want him to be in the occupation he's in) is completely ridiculous.
I realize one doesn't listen to these kinds of audiobooks because they're plausible. But come on... all she does is gripe about how he shouldn't be in the CIA (even though being in his job is what saved her life in a previous book) and he's crazy-madly-insanely in love with her even though she constantly complains to him about his occupation. She's ridiculously one-dimensional and it's tiresome listening to her incessant griping about Mitch being in the CIA. I might continue on to part 2 of this book if I thought she'd get blown up or otherwise eliminated from the plot.

Long, but well done.
Revisado: 05-22-11
A very long audio program, but full of interesting details. I liked it very much. Chernow did a great job of making Washington seem like a real person, not the marble statue we've come to know through history books. It did take several weeks to listen to it, though.

I love the Jack Reacher books, but this was awful.
Revisado: 12-20-10
I've listened to all of Lee Child's Jack Reacher books and enjoyed them. This one was awful. There were a myriad of one-dimensional bad guys who were impossible to keep straight. We learned nothing new about Reacher. It was flat, uninteresting and not particularly suspenseful. The Jack Reacher books are worthwhile -- just don't start with this one.

Historia
The terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, led most American citizens to feel that we are no longer safe and secure in our communities. However, terrorism is not a new phenomenon in the United States. This book chronicles 37 such assaults on American soil from the end of the Civil War to the present day. Not only are the most infamous attacks discussed; events that are obscure and relatively unknown - but fascinating nonetheless - are detailed as well.

Revisado: 04-23-09
I really liked this audiobook. I found the guided exercises very helpful and I've gone back and listen to some of them over again. It's a little hard to get into at first, because it is a complete, step by step program and there is some background info the author goes over in the beginning. But once I got a couple chapters into it, I felt it was really worthwhile. I learned a lot.
