Historia
Before 1862, Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain had rarely left his home state of Maine, where he was a trained minister and mild-mannered professor at Bowdoin College. His colleagues were shocked when he volunteered for the Union army, but he was undeterred and later became known as one of the North’s greatest heroes: On the second day at Gettysburg, after running out of ammunition at Little Round Top, he ordered his men to wield their bayonets in a desperate charge down a rocky slope that routed the Confederate attackers.

Pretty Good Biography
Revisado: 04-29-25
This is a complete and well research biography. It gave me larger insight into Chamberlain as a man of his time. However, I liked him a lot less- he seemed to be a fuddy duddy, sort of like Lee. Perhaps truly Victorian men were just like that. It did explain his war wounds more than I had previously understood, and they were pretty terrible. The war was clearly the seminal event of his life, and maybe it should have played a larger role in the book.
This was a narration I liked less than usual. The narrator, in his attempt to have perfect diction, became ponderous. He paused constantly, and was fairly monotonic. Maybe I would have found Chamberlain more lively with a more lively narrator?

Historia
The Ball family hails from South Carolina - Charleston and thereabouts. Their plantations were among the oldest and longest-standing plantations in the South. Between 1698 and 1865, close to 4,000 Black people were born into slavery under the Balls or were bought by them. In Slaves in the Family, Edward Ball recounts his efforts to track down and meet the descendants of his family's slaves.

Well worth it
Revisado: 12-04-23
I remember when this book came out, and somehow, I never got to it. Now there are more books on this topic. but this one is sui generis, the marriage of someone with incredible access to original sources with the talent and outlook to make it meaningful. This also represents a much better than average author narration. The author's well modulated baritone with its very slight southern accent, added to my enjoyment of the book.

Historia
The Ogallala aquifer has nourished life on the American Great Plains for millennia. But less than a century of unsustainable irrigation farming has taxed much of the aquifer beyond repair. The imminent depletion of the Ogallala and other aquifers around the world is a defining planetary crisis of our times. Running Out offers a uniquely personal account of aquifer depletion and the deeper layers through which it gains meaning and force.

Both informative and beautiful.

I expected this to be a book about aquifer conservation, and it was, but it was also a touching memoir about regret, masculinity, and ultimately understanding.

Historia
In Ill Fares The Land, Tony Judt, one of our leading historians and thinkers, reveals how we have arrived at our present dangerously confused moment. Judt masterfully crystallizes what we've all been feeling into a way to think our way into, and thus out of, our great collective dis-ease about the current state of things.

Performance got in the way

Yes, excellent diction, and the requisite Oxbridge accent, but this guy conveyed a superciliousness that is not congruent with how one assumes Judt himself would have sounded.

Truly remarkable
Revisado: 08-04-22
Magisterial in scope, and so beautifully written it stuns. How did I miss this book when it came out? The second half of the twentieth century now makes a lot more sense. It is also wonderfully narrated, across multiple languages.
