This was my second set of lectures by Professor Allitt. I love his speaking style, gentle humor, and presentation. He makes the lectures so very engaging, and I learn so much

I reviewed an earlier title in this series with some concerns about the narrator. But now I feel like I can dial some of that back as the series progresses. There are still some mispronunciations ("garrotte" is a big one), but previous words at issue have been corrected. And in this episode specifically, the narrator does a surprisingly not-annoying New England accent (source: I am a native of New England). It's really hard for someone who hasn't grown up leaving out Rs to be proficient in their (non?)application, and really hard for anyone who has done so to listen to most people try. I won't say she nails it, but it was pleasantly not horrible, and the misses were more cute than nails-on-a-chalkboard. Definitely an improved experience overall.

I love Seanan McGuire's books: Toby Daye is one of my favorite characters ever. I am enjoying this series so far: there's a place in everyone's life for "saw that coming a mile away" brain candy sometimes, and the story is entertaining. But there are flaws in the narration that keep pulling me up short. The first and most obvious is the narrator's frequent mispronunciation of words: gorgon, annals, so many others - I am constantly losing the flow of the story to an awkward pronunciation. The other thing that keeps throwing me off is not being able to tell if the main character is speaking out loud, narrating her thoughts, or having a telepathic conversation with another character. A different voice for these three states would have been helpful, though she's good at differentiating the actual other different characters. I'm definitely going to finish the series, but won't be as immersed in it as I'd love to be.

The story mostly reads more like a history textbook than a historical novel, but the tie-ins of how the legends MIGHT have been born are kind of neat. They remind me of Jack Whyte's Camulod Chronicles in concept, if not in depth. But I may have mentioned in other reviews that John Lee could read me the phone book, so I'll finish the story and maybe the series...

For some reason I had always thought Rumpole was Victorian-era, so the "modern" setting was kind of a surprise, but not a bad one. And if I could give this narrator six stars, I would. His timing and intonation were absolutely dead on. You could FEEL Rumpole trying to be funny, you could HEAR a character blushing at an unexpected compliment. Heading off to find more of Frederick Davidson's work!

First of all, John Lee could read me the phone book and I'd be content.

This book follows Follett's general formula: monks, builders, nobles, serfs, bad guys, good guys, speed bumps and luck, evil and good and reward and comeuppance. The infuriating moments were not unexpected, and neither were any of the results. But it was a decent read regardless.

I order Correia's books as soon as ever I can, and I'm usually enraptured. This one was just ok. Characters were more caricatures, and the "final" battle scene dragged on and on and on. I "had it on" more than "listened" to it. Definitely not as engaging as his other work. Probably won't bother with the obviously forthcoming sequel(s). Wyman was, as always, wicked fun to hear.

Big fan of the Hearne/Daniels combination anyway, and this story holds the line. Lots of Kevin's usually silliness and welcoming inclusion makes his first scifi tale a winner!

I usually really like Niven, but the "future" in this novel isn't translating well to more modern times. Everything from technology-related descriptions, to social mores, to the songs people sing, to the language people use is dated, and not in the fun campy way these things usually work: I'm having trouble suspending my disbelief. And there's too much focus on romantic relationships and sex/flirting in a way that comes across as incredibly juvenile. So far, the murder mystery is just a very flimsy structure to set the story on. I'm not done yet, so we'll see how that goes, but I'm not loving this book. The narrator is otherwise fine.
