Lovely writing and engrossing story
Revisado: 03-11-25
Don’t be put off by the slow, expository start. Before you know it you’ll be able to lock in on the timelines and characters and you’ll be in for a great listen and fun ride. Save this for a time when you’re able to commit to a long tale (and a lot of English culture) - you won’t be disappointed.

Historia
Hana Babic is a quiet middle-aged librarian in Minnesota who wants nothing more than to be left alone. But when a detective arrives with the news that her best friend has been murdered, Hana knows that something evil has come for her, a dark remnant of the past she and her friend had shared. Thirty years before, Hana was someone else: Nura Divjak, a teenager growing up in the mountains of war-torn Bosnia—until Serbian soldiers arrived to slaughter her entire family before her eyes. The events of that day thrust Nura into the war, leading her to join a band of militia fighters.

Revisado: 02-24-25
But not great? So much of the story is told outside of dialogue it drags at times. I realize it’s difficult to convey historical events without expository narration, but it just felt slow and a bit monotonous at times.

Historia
Cate Kay knows how to craft a story. As the creator of a bestselling book trilogy that struck box office gold as a film series, she’s one of the most successful authors of her generation. The thing is, Cate Kay doesn’t really exist. She’s never attended author events or granted any interviews. Her real identity had been a closely guarded secret, until now.

Different and interesting

LOVED this. The writing is really strong and the storyline is very original. A few details require you to suspend belief a bit, but it’s totally worth it. What a talent.

Good listen - annoying narration
Revisado: 02-07-25
Trust the other reviews. Story is REALLY original, so go for if you love the author or want something really different. Just brace yourself for the narration. You won’t notice it too much at first - but by 30% in you’ll have to consciously dismiss the narration.

When Boady Sanden first receives the case of Elijah Matthews, he’s certain there’s not much he can do. Elijah, who believes himself to be a prophet, has been locked up in a psychiatric hospital for the past four years, convicted of brutally murdering the pastor of a megachurch. But as a law professor working for the Innocence Project, Boady agrees to look into Elijah’s file. When he does, he is alarmed to find threads that lead back to the death of his colleague and friend, Ben Pruitt, a man shot to death four years earlier in Boady’s own home.

Great listen, despite …
Revisado: 01-21-25
I really liked this book - storylines and characters were both well developed and interesting. But the use of multiple narrators - not just for different chapters but within conversations and individual lines of dialogue - was really odd and distracting. I got used to it - but I’m not a fan.

Historia
Olivia McAfee knows what it feels like to start over. Her picture-perfect life—living in Boston, married to a brilliant cardiothoracic surgeon, raising their beautiful son, Asher—was upended when her husband revealed a darker side. She never imagined that she would end up back in her sleepy New Hampshire hometown, living in the house she grew up in and taking over her father’s beekeeping business. Lily Campanello is familiar with do-overs, too. When she and her mom relocate to Adams, New Hampshire, for her final year of high school, they both hope it will be a fresh start.

Some of the most eloquent and moving writing I’ve experienced in recent years. It’s up there with Demon Copperhead and Tom’s Lake for me - just lovely to listen to, except when it’s breaking your heart.

Stunning houses nestle beneath mighty Douglas firs, and lush backyards roll down to the lakefront. It’s the kind of place where neighbors look out for one another. Sometimes a little too closely…

Interesting storyline with largely believable details. Was worth a credit for sure. Re: narration, I listen to all books at 1.2 and sped this up to 1.5 and it sounded perfectly normal.
