Fun, if a little predictable, but the wrap-up at the end killed it for me
Revisado: 05-01-24
Not great, not awful. Story was fun to follow, and I definitely would've rated the book higher, despite its predictability, if the last two chapters hadn't been so saccharine. The ending was so cheesy that it undercut how much I enjoyed the rest of the story.

Historia
Rosie and Chad Lowan are barely making ends meet in New York City when they receive life-changing news: Chad’s late uncle has left them his luxury apartment at the historic Windermere in glamorous Murray Hill. With its prewar elegance and impeccably uniformed doorman, the building is the epitome of old New York charm. One would almost never suspect the dark history lurking behind its perfectly maintained facade.

What in the Rosemary's Baby...?
Revisado: 03-07-24
That was my constant refrain while listening to this amazing new book from Lisa Unger. Trust me, that's a good thing. Every time I thought I had the story figured out, it would take a new turn that surprised me. I love it when a book keeps me on my toes!

Another Great Human Monster Meets Supernatural Mystery from Simone St. James
Revisado: 03-05-24
Performance was excellent, and the story was wonderful! Took off a star for the suspension of disbelief required to read how the police harass an innocent couple when their alibi is easily established. But everything gets wrapped up nicely, and overall, it's another brilliant mystery by one of my favorite authors.

Historia
When the Australian Mystery Writers’ Society invited me to their crime-writing festival aboard the Ghan, the famous train between Darwin and Adelaide, I was hoping for some inspiration for my second book. Fiction, this time: I needed a break from real people killing each other. Obviously, that didn’t pan out.

What A Sequel!
Revisado: 02-01-24
Stevenson's follow-up to Everyone in My Family Has Killed Someone did not disappoint! It was fun to follow Ern as he navigated his newfound fame and some more strange murders. I love how the story continued the ultra-meta talking-to-the-reader style, including the new "rules" for these books. (Almost got me there for a minute at the end!) The performer was also excellent and did a great job distinguishing the characters and keeping me immersed in the story. Hoping HBO picks this one up too!

The Essex in the Arctic
Revisado: 12-06-23
This was a wonderful epic with flavors of the real-life tragedy of the Essex but plenty of its own twists and turns. The story flowed very well and built up to the climax perfectly. Additionally, the narrator was fantastic, and his voice-work really helped immerse me into Captain Day's world. An excellent, chilling [and chilly!] read for the winter!

Historia
Twelve years ago, eight friends ran an exclusive group at university: the Masquerade Murder Society. The mysteries they solved may have been grisly, and brilliantly staged, but they were always fictional—until their final Christmas Masquerade, when one of the group disappeared, never to be seen again. Now our privileged young cast of old university friends are summoned to the depths of Scotland for a Christmas-themed masquerade party. But all are hiding something deep below the surface that could make or break their careers.

And Then There Were None, But Make It Christmas
Revisado: 11-08-23
I loved this book so much it's definitely got a spot on my yearly re-read list. It had all my favorite whodunit tropes, plus some juicy modern-day drama and creative morality kills. The narrator was excellent, as well, though I may have to switch to the physical copy for future readings because there are so many characters that it got a little confusing to keep up with them all. I highly recommend this holiday thriller!

A Good Story, A So-So Narrator
Revisado: 10-11-23
Even though I prefer Colleen Cambridge's Phyllida Bright as a protagonist, this was an intriguing story that was still fun to experience. Plenty of twists and turns for any whodunit fan. The narrator wasn't my favorite. It seemed like she couldn't quite decide what kind of character to make of the protagonist (including what kind of accent she should have) or whether she wanted to read dramatically or comically. Still, it was a solid listen!

A Little Too Long But Great Plot
Revisado: 09-06-23
The narrators were fantastic, and I liked the overarching story. My one gripe is that a good 30% of the book could've been cut, which made it a bit too long of a listen with all the superfluous details. But otherwise, I really enjoyed it!

Amazing Thriller About A Real Unsolved Murder
Revisado: 08-07-23
I highly recommend this book for anyone who loves thrillers and/or true crime. It's wonderfully written and acted and incorporates the details of the real-life unsolved murder in an interesting way that not only keeps you interested but also provides social commentary that transports you to the 1920s. The book drags a bit about 2/3rds of the way through, but not enough for me to detract a star, especially because the ending was excellent. Broadway Butterfly reminds us that real life isn't always wrapped up so neatly. Sometimes, people are treated unfairly. Sometimes, prejudices impede justice. And sometimes, the murderer gets away with it.
