Historia
As the “Seeing Eye Girl” for her blind, artistic, and mentally ill mother, Beverly Armento was intimately connected with and responsible for her, even though her mother physically and emotionally abused her. Beverly’s mother regained her sight and went on to enjoy a moment of fame as an artist, but these positive turns did nothing to stop her disintegration into delusions. In this memoir, Beverly shares the coping strategies she invented to get herself through the trials of her young life, and the ways in which school and church served as refuges over the course of her journey.

Gripping, yet hard to take in
Revisado: 02-05-23
This is the second work I’ve read lately that has to do with mistreatment of children by parents and society’s inability to respond. The first was set in the Great Depression. This was post-WWII.
The accounts of the mother being treated by medical professionals and showcased by nonprofits was almost unbelievable vis a vis the madness that no one caught on to.
The role of the teachers was positive and they led to the writer’s resilience. I was waiting on a divine intervention and it had to come from inside the heroine. Maybe that’s the point of resilience??
The book was gripping and I kept listening. The performance by the reader was strong.

Historia
A major new biography of J Edgar Hoover that draws from never-before-seen sources to create a groundbreaking portrait of a colossus who dominated half a century of American history and planted the seeds for much of today's conservative political landscape.

Interesting book
Revisado: 01-22-23
The narrator was great for reading this very long book. The tone and expression kept it moving.
It’s an important book about a complicated figure. The author does a fine job pulling it together and using evidence.

Historia
A poignant look at the disillusionment and angst of the post-World War I generation, The Sun Also Rises introduces two of Hemingway’s most unforgettable characters: Jake Barnes and Lady Brett Ashley. The story follows the flamboyant Brett and the hapless Jake as they journey from the wild nightlife of 1920s Paris to the brutal bullfighting rings of Spain with a motley group of expatriates. In his first great literary masterpiece, Hemingway portrays an age of moral bankruptcy, spiritual dissolution, unrealized love, and vanishing illusions.

William Hurt made this novel work
Revisado: 05-31-21
Hemingway’s spare narrative requires emotion to keep it from being boring. The William Hurt narration with the various accents for various characters helped a lot.

Historia
Born during the Civil War into a slaveholding family that included Black, White, and Cherokee forebears, Adella Hunt Logan dedicated herself to advancing political and educational opportunities for the African American community. She taught at Alabama's Tuskegee Institute but also joined the segregated woman suffrage movement, passing for White in order to fight for the rights of people of color. Her determination - as a wife, mother, scholar, and activist - to challenge the draconian restraints of race and gender generated conflicts that precipitated her tragic demise.

Interesting family memoir
Revisado: 05-09-21
Princess of the Hither Isles is an interesting book. Adele Logan Alexander brings together a broad swath of American history through the life of her grandmother.
The audio book helped me stay interested in the very detailed story and also historical context.
Some of the narrator’s accents were stereotypical and exaggerated. I wondered if having a couple of narrators would have made it better.
