Historia
Mallory Viridian would rather not be an amateur detective, thank you very much. But no matter what she does, people persist in dying around her—and only she seems to be able to solve the crime. After fleeing to an alien space station in hopes that the lack of humans would stop the murders, a serial killer had the nerve to follow her to Station Eternity. (Mallory deduced who the true culprit was that time, too.)

Just didn’t quite hit
Revisado: 03-19-25
I really wanted to like this book. I didn’t love the first book, but the reviews were much better for this one and I felt like maybe the author just needed to get out some of the kinks.
First of all, let me just say that I love the premise, I think the idea of somebody finding themselves around murders all the time is exactly what many of the main characters in mysteries would actually be like in real life. Why are all these people dying around them? I love the wasp aliens. I think that is fascinating.
That said, I feel like the relational interactions were a little bit off. They felt more like caricatures with exaggerated actions than actual ways that people would interact. I know that many of the characters are aliens, but I also think there is an expectation that things would flow in a recognizable way to the reader. I will go so far as to say if you just single out to humans, I felt like the emotional and relational interactions were flat.
The mystery also didn’t really develop. It felt like an afterthought at the end. Overall, I think the biggest criticism I would have would be the flow of the story. Some of the things that happened just didn’t seem realistic. Some of the characters act so dumbfounded when they discovered very obvious aspects of the story. At one point one of the character said they felt so stupid for not seeing it earlier and I couldn’t have agreed more. I think the series has much promise, but there is a lot of tweaks, especially in character development that would need to take place for me to want to read the third book.

Historia
From idyllic small towns to claustrophobic urban landscapes, Mallory Viridian is constantly embroiled in murder cases that only she has the insight to solve. But outside of a classic mystery novel, being surrounded by death doesn’t make you a charming amateur detective, it makes you a suspect and a social pariah. So when Mallory gets the opportunity to take refuge on a sentient space station, she thinks she has the solution. Surely the murders will stop if her only company is alien beings. At first her new existence is peacefully quiet…and markedly devoid of homicide.

Good, but can be better
Revisado: 03-13-25
I really like the premise of this book. I also think it has really great promise. There are a few little things that were cons for me:
1. The narrator does have an annoying meter to her voice. It’s usually when she’s describing things - not when she’s doing the character voices. But it is a little bit drone and informational. Still, it wasn’t enough to distract me so I was OK with it.
2. The main characters were just a little bit whiny. Not anything that was too distracting, but at times I wish they did embrace the story rather than constantly lamenting about it.
3. Finally, there was a mystery here, but it was a little bit buried into a larger, sci-fi, suspenseful, Origin story.
I look forward to more of these and will definitely read the next one. I hope that it is a little bit more focused on the murder mystery rather than some of the other aspects, however, I understand with this being the first book, it was important to establish the world and the characters within that world. Overall, I thought this was really great.

Across the country women are being murdered by a killer who leaves no evidence, no fatal wounds, no signs of struggle, and no clues to a motive. They are, truly, perfect crimes. In fact, the only thing that links the victims is the man they all knew: Jack Reacher.

Ok, predictable
Revisado: 02-18-25
I started the series when number 20 was out. So I get that things have changed a bit since they started this. I watched the TV show and the movies first. Maybe it’s the comparison, but I feel like this is a little clunky. The mystery was solved for me about a third of the way through. Felt like all the clues were in place and you could clearly see the puzzle. So when people have no clue, it was really annoying. Again, don’t want to be too hasty. It’s a solid book and I’m hoping that the later installments will be a little more polished.

Nice world. Want more
Revisado: 02-08-25
I really like this book. I think it was a really good start. I would love them to develop the mystery just a little bit more and have more adventures for these two. One thing that is a personal thing, but not a dealbreaker in this book is the narration. You can almost always tell when an author narrates their own book. There is a sense of timing that is off. Like they’re reading something rather than inviting in the characters. I think Libby did an incredible job but still a little offputting with the narration. I wish they had more professional actors next time. Definitely worth listening to. And I enjoyed it very much.

Historia
Meet Jack Price and the Seven Demons: Doc, the evil mad scientist presently using Jack for sex; Rex, an explosives expert who doesn’t ask too many questions so long as something goes boom; Volodya, a Ukrainian assassin who may or may not be a cannibal; Charlie, a comic book artist with computer skills and an anarchist bent; Lucille, whose specialty is razor-edged hugs; and Jack’s predecessor, Fred, who doesn’t contribute a whole lot owing to being a severed head on a stick. Finally there’s Jack himself, former coffee magnate turned cocaine dealer turned First Demon.

Greatest narration ever heard!
Revisado: 11-13-24
I cannot say enough about the narrator’s reading of this book. It was brilliant and obviously very difficult and perfect in delivered and temperament!
The book is amazing. It is not necessarily for the faint of heart. It is about a villain, and there is an enormous amount of swearing. That said it’s not necessarily gratuitous. I feels like the book is a tapestry and it is a definite thread. It serves as seasoning. This book is not everyone, but if you love, incredible character-driven stories of mystery and thrills that also include quirky characters - this is for you. I would give it six stars if I could.

Surprising good
Revisado: 11-06-24
I bought this on a whim. It was surprisingly really really good. The premise intrigued me, but it did also delivered. There’s a period in the middle that gets a little bogged down, but it ends well and was very entertaining.

You need to go out and get this. I got it day one and I’m already finished with it. Couple of days is all it took to dive headlong into the wonderful world of good boys. It makes me a little bit sad that it’ll only be a trilogy. Would love to see these characters blossom into a much longer series.

A must have - a special book
Revisado: 08-23-24
This book is so incredible. Maybe this touched me where I am right now, but I feel like this book was equal parts entertaining, informative, and inspiring. Interesting stories of some wonderful pieces of sports as well as heartwarming stories of his family, coupled with inspirational stories of trying to be the man God made him to be despite the unscripted moments. I especially like the idea of unscripted moments being both positive and negative. Both balancing a life well lived.
