Historia
Lost Hollow constable Graham Gordon just walked into his abandoned childhood home for the first time in 20 years. Local teenagers have been spreading rumors about disembodied screams coming from inside. Now, thanks to a rickety set of cellar stairs and the hateful spirit of his dead father, he might never escape.

Ugh, mediocre story ruined by awful reader.
Revisado: 08-15-19
For goodness sake, do authors take the time to listen to the body of work of the reader's they engage?
Instead we get mildly nasal sound of the most annoying coworker you can imagine. Most of the reading is flat. The rare flourish of extra effort consists of poorly executed country accents.
The story itself is an amateur hour creation. The author expended significant effort endlessly expounding on the evil of every "typical straight white male". The stereotypes are really quite jarring, I can't say I see much difference between this author's statements and hate speech, as there wouldn't be any question if the demographics of his target was different.
This book is being returned, but there's enough promise I'll give the next one a chance if there's a different narrator.

Historia
In this reappraisal of racial politics in modern America, Kevin Kruse explains the causes and consequences of "white flight" in Atlanta and elsewhere. Seeking to understand segregationists on their own terms, White Flight moves past simple stereotypes to explore the meaning of white resistance. In the end, Kruse finds that segregationist resistance, which failed to stop the civil rights movement, nevertheless managed to preserve the world of segregation and even perfect it in subtler and stronger forms.

Garbage
Revisado: 02-19-19
Filled with half truths and broad generalizations, this book is little more than fuel for those who are seeking to reinforce their own bigotry against a large swath of people. If you're an elitist seeking to feel superior to "knuckle dragging southerners", this is the book for you.

Historia
Once every year, in the city of Sunja, gladiators meet in the arena known as Sunja’s Pit. Some are lured there by the prospect of fortune or fame; others come simply for the thrill of the fight. The games continue for days, until a champion is crowned—or all involved perish. When it becomes clear that to be a Free Trained pit fighter is to live with a mark on one’s head, four warriors struggle to change their lot, both in and out of the arena. But that’s easier said than done, and not everyone is pleased to learn of their plans.

A Masterpiece, read by one of the best!
Revisado: 12-23-18
OK, this doesn't belong in horror, which is where I found it. I'm not typically a fan of action fantasy fiction. It takes an exceptional book to get one to like something outside of their preferred genres, and this book does that and leaves me wanting more.
131 Days is like the best historical fiction, rich with detail, fast moving, but in this case so compressed, focused on the arena and those connected to it that it ultimately seduces you with the finely woven world.
Then there's the one-two punch of Blackmore's excellent character development and Lee's typically incredible character performance. While I notice a few voices were familiar from other works (particularly Clive Barker's the Crimson Gospels) this is in no way a negative. They were perfect for the characters they were used for. In my mind, Lee adds so much to the uniqueness of each voice, that it's as if you're listening to a full cast audio play, and some roles are being played by familiar, highly talented actors. Take note publishers, and you too Audible, THIS is what an audiobook should sound like.

A great imagination makes for terrific ghost stories - stories that go beyond the tapping on the doors in the middle of a night or a whistling thrush or even a squeaky swing in the wind. This is a collection of some such horror stories selected and compiled by Ruskin Bond that will send shivers down your spine.

Ruined by poor choice of narrator.
Revisado: 12-12-18
This is a high quality collection of stories. It's my preferred genre, and I usually give a lot more leeway in terms of narration for supernatural short stories than for other books, but this is unlistenable. The narrator puts forth a good effort, including the application of unique voices for speaking characters. The problem is the syrupy thick accent, and the competent, but coarse English spoken by Mr. Kochar. Nothing is better for a good ghost story than a nice British accent (whether English, Irish, Welsh or Scottish), and there is no shortage of them available for narration work. Why they chose a heavily accented non-native English speaker for this book is beyond me. There are books for which such a narrator would be appropriate, this isn't one of them.

Boring beyond belief
Revisado: 11-06-17
I'm a patient reader/listener. I prefer my horror atmospheric and slow to build, think M.R. James or H.P. Lovecraft. This is not slow to build, it's glacial. Rather than filling that time building a rich tapestry, this is just mundane detail after mundane, everyday detail with very little progression in the story.
Incredibly for such a poor book, the narration is top notch. The narrator puts the type of effort into distinct voices for various characters I associate with the best in the business.

Geoff Ashden is a regular guy trying to make an honest living as an antique dealer, but who has an uncanny knack for finding cursed objects and haunted places: a sinister Georgian clock carved with obscene and satanic designs, a hideous doll with deadly powers, a pair of old spectacles that let their wearer see a little too clearly, an ugly house with a terrifying secret, a church full of graffiti scrawled in decomposing human flesh.

Magnificent collection of ghost stories!
Revisado: 10-22-16
Would you listen to Antique Dust again? Why?
Literary horror. If you enjoy MR James, Sheridan Le Fanu, HP Lovecraft you will enjoy these masterfully crafted stories.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Antique Dust?
Thinking the first story was a standard, formulaic story with the "bad guy get's his"!
Any additional comments?
Get it, I've read and/or listened to over a thousand horror/supernatural audiobooks. If you enjoy intelligent, well written horror without being drenched in gore, you won't be disappointed!

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
A better narrator without the strange cadence and random inflections!
What other book might you compare Horror Stories to and why?
Other great classic material ruined by Dobson's weird narration.
What didn’t you like about Cathy Dobson’s performance?
Everything. She has a British accent, which would usually bode well for this type of material, but in her case it's just awful.
If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Horror Stories?
The scene where Cathy Dobson enters the narrators booth.
