My son actually recommended this book to me. It was assigned to him for a college course. I found this an excellent introduction in trauma informed care. I definitely recommend it to anyone who works with the public. I plan to pursue further education on the topic. Thank you Oprah and Dr. Perry for bringing this topic to a general audience.

Annoying voices, story needs editing

I tried. I do not like to stop a book after I have started, but after investing ( hours into this book I simply can’t keep going. The voices are not just annoying, but they all seem annoyed. No one is happy. It’s a very strange thing to experience a narration like this one. The story is too slow and in need of editing. I feel like nothing is happening. There is no reason a plot like this one needs 13 hours to finish. Cut about half of the book out and it might be fun -with a different narration. I try not to leave negative reviews but this book has way too many positives to make sense. I read a lot and listen a lot, and this one is just not worth a credit.

Deserving of all of the credit it has been given. Artful, literary, heart wrenching, and beautiful.

This book was very slow. The inciting incident did not come until chapter 41. Even then, it just drug on with inane details that did nothing to add to the story, including retelling the entire story from another character’s perspective. I appreciated the first two books in this series, but this one may have turned me off to the author all together. A good editor would perhaps been able to save it, but not without a lot of effort.

As a student of shamanism (sans plant teachers) and as a physician, I find the correlations depicted in this book to be quite intriguing. I have both studied DNA and spent time journeying with the spirit teachers in the upper and lower worlds. In my own experience, one certainly does not cancel out the other. The only thing that would improve this volume would be to see/hear about the author furthering his own shamanic experiences with or without plant teachers to help improve the overall quality of his own research. The vast majority of the world’s shamanic cultures work with spirits without the help of hallucinogenic substances. Most use auditory or physical driving which awakens the brain waves involved in the shamanic journey (or hallucinations, if one is to use the terms of this book). Drums, rattles, dancing, flute, didgeridoo, etc, are used far more often amongst these cultures. This does not necessarily mean the author’s premiss is incorrect, as our own human cells have a plethora of nicotine receptors and many common foods contain nicotine, including potatoes and broccoli. In other words, there is far more research to be done and this thesis is only scratching the surface of what we have yet to learn. This book proves nothing but does present an interesting theory as a jumping off point for further exploration. I only hope the author, in his ongoing study, will find that the path to knowledge is available to him within his own DNA. Knowing this will ultimately lead to far more discoveries than reading books will ever allow.

Beautifully written and read. This is not my typical genre but I am so glad I went with this book.

This book is at least 4x longer than it should be because there are pauses every few words filled with music. I would really just like the information without having to wait for it to keep going. I realize this is called a meditation, but it is several hours long.

Narration is not good

I wish I had sampled this title before purchasing. I can’t listen. I am sure the author thought she would do well narrating her own work, but I think a professional narrator would likely bring a more palatable experience. I can’t seem to return this one, which really is frustrating since despite trying three times, I can’t get past the first chapter.

These have to be some of the best books of all time. I read a lot, between 50-100 books per year. I rarely Re-read novels, but every year from September to October, I Re-listen to all 7 Harry Potter books. This is a tradition my family and I share. Every time, I pick up something new. One thing that impressed me immensely is JK Rowling’s incredible understanding of child psychology and her ability to translate that into her characters. The way they interact, how their home lives affect their personalities, and the hard (and exciting) parts of growing up. Her imagination is incredible and the amount of research that had to have gone into the creation of the wizarding world is astounding. I have so much respect for her art. Jim Dale is also a phenomenal narrator and listening to these stories never seems to grow old. The Harry Potter books truly are magical in every sense. I feel badly for those who have only watched the movies. While well made, they don’t hold a candle to the books, and so much is lost on screen. I can’t recommend these books more highly for kids and adults. I can’t wait to have grandchildren someday, so that I can continue to share the magic with another generation.

The basic story line was not bad. It was just suspenseful enough that I finished it, but it was painful. The narration was one star better than AI generated speech. The writing was mediocre but I’ve never written an entire novel, so who am I to judge. I’m going to go with this as a first best effort - maybe the later books are better.
