Historia
It’s a beautiful day in Newport, Rhode Island, when Phoebe Stone arrives at the grand Cornwall Inn wearing a green dress and gold heels, not a bag in sight, alone. She's immediately mistaken by everyone in the lobby for one of the wedding people, but she’s actually the only guest at the Cornwall who isn’t here for the big event. Phoebe is here because she’s dreamed of coming for years—she hoped to shuck oysters and take sunset sails with her husband, only now she’s here without him, at rock bottom, and determined to have one last decadent splurge on herself.

It was ok. I like stories that pull me in and this just didn’t. It was shallow all the way through. The characters were unremarkable and was the story. There were times that I thought “Oh it’s going get good” and it didn’t.

I didn’t care for the podcast part and I felt like the character’s choices and behaviors were forced in this book. I really love Caroline Mitchell, this book, not so much.

Historia
After Tova Sullivan’s husband died, she began working the night shift at the Sowell Bay Aquarium, mopping floors and tidying up. Keeping busy has always helped her cope, which she’s been doing since her eighteen-year-old son, Erik, mysteriously vanished on a boat in Puget Sound over thirty years ago. Tova becomes acquainted with curmudgeonly Marcellus, a giant Pacific octopus living at the aquarium. Marcellus knows more than anyone can imagine but wouldn’t dream of lifting one of his eight arms for his human captors—until he forms a remarkable friendship with Tova.

Historia
In this award-winning Audible Studios production, Trevor Noah tells his wild coming-of-age tale during the twilight of apartheid in South Africa. It’s a story that begins with his mother throwing him from a moving van to save him from a potentially fatal dispute with gangsters, then follows the budding comedian’s path to self-discovery through episodes both poignant and comical.

I need a sixth star for this book
Revisado: 01-26-17
Wow! I loved Born a Crime from the second I turned it on it is happy, sad, funny, as well as interesting!! I never found my mind wondering while listening because it is so well written. I don't want to say more because I hate spoilers. I would highly recommend the audio book because it is read by the author Trevor Noah whose narration adds a whole new later to the story. It wouldn't be the same narrated by any other person.

Great Idea for a story, poorly executed
Revisado: 10-16-15
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
Some character development. There wasn't any and the author needed to do better research about, cold weather, scouting, crime, fishing, poverty and how different personalities interact in the real world. The characters were not believable in their actions or in much of their dialogue.
What was most disappointing about Mary Kubica’s story?
The old saying "Write what you know" has never been more pronounced with the shortcomings of this story
What didn’t you like about the narrators’s performance?
They did a great job reading, the problem is that one of the characters is supposed to have an English accent and there were like three narrators and when they did the "other" character voices it was distracting. Each of the narrators were very good at their part. It is when they are all put together that the "overall" performance is not good. Not their falt.
What character would you cut from The Good Girl?
None.

Rather predictable and contrived
Revisado: 07-21-15
What did you like best about The Quiet Game? What did you like least?
I liked the general idea for the story. What I liked least was the execution. The main character and his family are supposed to be open minded, and socially aware. I get the impression that the author is looking to paint a picture of Atticus Finch, but has a hard time doing so. The whole idea of 'write what you know' is missing here. Knowing what small town life is like is imperative to writing about small town life. Let's just say that a stranger (young woman) moving to town will attract a lot of attention particularly if the king pin of the town or his debutante daughter did not want her there. Oh and one does not decide to walk 3 miles in 3 foot of snow (post holing) in sneakers and a light jacket. It also takes A LONG time to walk that 3 miles. Don't get me started about being wet in winter and how long it takes hypothermia to set in. One also does not 'run' in wet clothing in deep snow. Also things do not just 'work out' for people who get caught trying to look at FBI records. Even if the person is found to be guilty that they are trying to expose.....they are still breaking the law and will be punished accordingly.
What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?
I liked the idea of this story in that it had some twists, though they were rather predictable.
What does Tom Stechschulte bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
I think Tom Stechschulte does a variety of voices and transitions between them flawlessly. His narration very much added to the experience. I probably would not have finished the book if it was poorly narrated.
Did The Quiet Game inspire you to do anything?
No

Mary Karr's biography looks back through a child's eyes to sort through dark household secrets. She witnesses an inheritance squandered, endless bottles emptied, and guns leveled at both the deserving and the undeserving. In a voice stripped of self-pity and charged with brilliant energy, she introduces us to a family ravaged by lies and alcoholism, yet redeemed by the revelation of truth.

A good narrator is important for an audio book
Revisado: 07-21-15
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
The story seems intriguing, the problem is that it is written by someone who experienced emotional damage and is (understandably) disconnected from the true/raw feelings present at the time they were felt. The events are more 'reported' than shared from a deep feeling and understanding. So in order for this to be a 4 or 5 star story I think there needs to be a professional writer (who is familiar with this emotional numbness and can see through it) helping write this story to help add better descriptions of the experience of this young girl. Perhaps the book is better than the audio book. This one is read by the author, it is a depressing drone with no feeling or incite one would expect from the person who experienced the events she is talking about. It is reminiscent of recordings taken of office visits to a psychologist or psychiatrist of a heavily medicated person seeking help.
Would you ever listen to anything by Mary Karr again?
No
Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Mary Karr?
No clue
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
I was disappointed in the quality of the material and the presentation. The story seems to have a lot of potential
Any additional comments?
No, I think I covered it all in the first bit.

Historia
The Goldfinch is a haunted odyssey through present-day America and a drama of enthralling force and acuity. It begins with a boy. Theo Decker, a 13-year-old New Yorker, miraculously survives an accident that kills his mother. Abandoned by his father, Theo is taken in by the family of a wealthy friend. Bewildered by his strange new home on Park Avenue, disturbed by schoolmates who don't know how to talk to him, and tormented above all by his unbearable longing for his mother, he clings to one thing that reminds him of her: a small, mysteriously captivating painting that ultimately draws Theo into the underworld of art.

Too much detail for too long
Revisado: 10-01-14
Is there anything you would change about this book?
The story seemed to drag aimlessly about 3 or 4 times. The attention to detail is well done, it is just overdone to the point of boredom those 3 or 4 times.
What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?
I liked the plot twists, and I liked the characters.
Which character – as performed by David Pittu – was your favorite?
David Pittu's performance made the book interesting enough for me to continue listening. He did such a great job with the characters that I will probably look for books read by him in the future.
If this book were a movie would you go see it?
If this book was made into a movie I probably would not see it unless it had outstanding reviews.

Why we think it’s a great listen: Seabiscuit was a runaway success, and Hillenbrand’s done it again with another true-life account about beating unbelievable odds. Then, on the ocean surface, a face appeared....
