I found this less engaging than other books by Simon Winchester. The first two chapters were difficult to get through as they wandered far afield from the 1906 earthquake. I enjoy the science and the history and the political / religious ramifications that Winchester observes I just found this book less coherent than the map that changed the world or Krakatoa.

What made the experience of listening to The Penderwicks on Gardam Street the most enjoyable?

My two daughters 10 and 12 love to listen to stories and particularly enjoyed this one. The characters are engaging and they keep quoting things they learned from Mr.Penderwick.

Who was your favorite character and why?

They seem to love batty and Sky the best but really they love them all, except Mrs. Tipton and Baxter.

What about Susan Denaker’s performance did you like?

She does a great job capturing the characters with different voices and good pacing.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes, but it was too long.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I would recommend this book due to the dynamic nature of the story and the theology so deeply woven throughout.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Last Battle?

I love the scene when the dwarves refuse to believe they are in Alsan's country and act as if they are trapped in a dirty stable. C.S. Lewis uses this to illustrate the way in which some people refuse the good things that come their way by being

Which character – as performed by Patrick Stewart – was your favorite?

Stewart has a good range of voices and keeps the story going, I especially liked his voice for Puzzle the donkey.

Any additional comments?

While the theology is unavoidable it does not overwhelm the story or make it inaccessible to the children I have read it to, though some are very sad that Narnia comes to an end.

Anne Rice has done a powerful job delving into the potential experiences of Jesus the Christ in those early years. She is blending excellence of research with vibrant imagination to create a realistic narrative thread. She also uses both the Jewish history and the the traditions of the church to her advantage. Brilliant!
