I chose this book because books like Shepherding a Child's Heart or What the Bible Says About Parenting are not available through Amazon Audible and I really wanted some help in thinking about raising children. This book would be a very bad book if written today now that our culture is so psychologized and has such a heavy focus on self-ism and self-esteem. Thankfully this book was written before the 1900s and has therefore dodged a major bullet. It really lacks a lot of scriptural references which would be helpful since so much of Scripture does talk about working with your children. However, it does make a lot of proverbial wisdom commonsense recommendations. Often these days when a book lacks scriptural support and speaks on 'wisdom' it rarely comes from biblical base of proverbial wisdom but rather a common worldly and secular thinking based on psychology. So this book does give a lot of good, timeless, and helpful thoughts and strategies and ideas for raising your child properly. I am a public school teacher, Sunday school teacher, children's church server, and I train and coach young athletes. With two young children of my own and a wealth of experience many of the things stated in this book seemed common sense to me. However, that is only because I have experienced that God is put into my life. But of course there were enough suggestions where light bulbs went off like, "That's a great idea, why have I not been doing that?" Therefore, if you have similar experiences you may find the book a bit long given its simple recommendations. I believe the concepts of this book might be better taken by somebody else and written as an article where each point is given a paragraph or two to explain why the suggestion fits. This book has a chapter for each suggestion and it does go on for quite a while. However, I am still reviewing it well because any tips or strategies that are not worldly and secular that can help you raise your children in a more biblical and loving home are always welcomed and appreciated. Also, I realize that many people may not feel the same way that I do because many people may not have quite the experience of working with kids and trying out different strategies that I have. The two books that I mentioned at the beginning would be better resources if you're only going to choose one or two books. However, for what Amazon Audible offers this is not a book that you should easily pass over. It does offer a lot of good simple strategies that we should be doing with our children but sadly we don't because our culture has changed and it is not common place. In this sense, it is very good that we can turn back to an older book to refer to strategies that worked for Christian parents back before the culture changed so much. As with all audiobooks I do voice recognition software notes by pausing the book throughout and collecting my thoughts by speaking. I have about 17 to 18 pages of bulleted notes from this book that I plan on going back to at some point and periodically checking to make sure that I am doing all that I am learning to be the best and most godly father that I can be to our two children. In that sense it has much to offer and I recommend it.

I've listened to at least five audiobooks by now and this narrator was the most pleasing to listen to, although I think they all are. But quite honestly the content of this book is so rich in helping us to think clearly about who God is, what he has done, how we should think about him, and how we should live in a right response to that that I wouldn't mind if the reader of the book had the most annoying voice. This audiobook really blends a great reader with a great concept written by a great author. There was nothing about the book I disliked. I have read and listened to many different teachings on the attributes of God. In some degree you may find a bit of redundancy if that is the case for you as well. However, this nonexhaustive book covers greater breadth and depth than other books written on the topic. I never found myself bored. I never found myself listening and thinking all too often, "I already know this". Surely, some topics and ideas and explanations will be something you are already familiar with but it is presented in a fresh way. As the book goes on I truly feel that the best parts of it are in the last remaining chapters. This is so wonderful because it brings great closure to what can be a long book. So much is said about knowing God because of what he has revealed about himself on the pages of Scripture. Then, one of the most wonderful doctrines presented in the book that is rarely addressed in a book on the attributes of God is the chapter on being adopted by God. This is a chapter that I will come back to and reflect on more and more to help me be grateful to the Lord and love him for his amazing grace and to use in times of difficulty to remember his kind providence and care. Lastly, the book ends with a marvelous chapter and exposition of Romans chapter 8 in light of what Paul says in Romans chapter 7 and Packer uses these two chapters of the Bible to teach us the adequacy of God so that we would find our pure assurance and satisfaction in him alone for what he has done for sinners such as us in Christ. Listening to this book was a pure joy and I'm sad that it's over. As with all audiobooks I pause frequently and use voice recognition software to record my notes. I have ended up with about 29 pages of bulleted thoughts and notes from this book that will help me throughout my life. I strongly encourage you to consider spending time with this book.

Very Helpful Guide to Think Rightly on Marriage

Though I would state that books like the Exemplary Husband, Preparing for Marriage, and the Excellent Wife would be better resources for people preparing for marriage I would say that this is the best book out there for those who are distraught and downtrodden in their marriage. This book helped me tremendously to see my selfishness in a whole new light. We know that we are sinful but sometimes it is difficult to connect all that we know to be true about sin to the everyday occurrences in which we find difficulty with our spouse. This book is outstanding because it not only lays out many of these principles but it gives many examples of couples that the author has counseled and it shows that he paid real close attention to who they are and what brought them to their difficulties so that he could point their errors out to us. You'll often find yourself saying, 'I am guilty of that, too'. In this case you realize as it says in first Corinthians 10 verse 13 that no temptation has overtaken you but such as is common to man. You are a sinful spouse to your spouse but so is everybody else. But the great hope is that God does provide the way of escape or endurance because he is faithful. There are chapters that are less substantive than others. I would suggest that my favorite chapters were probably around chapter 7 or eight in really addressing the issue of how to uproot weeds in your own heart and begin to put on love. As Christians we often know that we are to love and that we are not to sin. And we know what is clear in the Bible that we should not do. Most couples are not lying to their spouse or cheating on their spouse or degrading their spouse. However, there are many ways in which each of us must take ownership and personal responsibility for the subtle difficulties in our marriage that we have sadly become comfortable with and this book lays them out. I know of no better resource to give you a great understanding of how you may be at fault for the errors in your marriage. This may seem like bad news but with the proper understanding of the root of the problem there is true hope. There is always hope in our great God who has offered power through him to put on righteousness for his glory and out of kindness and adoration towards your spouse. I truly believe that this book will help me fight to be a better husband though I fail so often. I truly believe that this book will help many couples have a realistic understanding of what marriage is and why the problems occur. Along with all that right understanding is the remedy of finding satisfaction in Christ alone and realizing how to act in a proper manner towards your wife based on proverbial wisdom and with what the Scriptures clearly teach. The only downside I would suggest is that there could've been far more biblical references to support many of the ideas. However, an outstanding husband book or wife book that attaches the Scriptures are the ones that I mentioned in the beginning of this review. If you're looking for a book that takes a slightly different approach and speaks to commonsense problems that we are also guilty of this is it. Do not pass up on this book.

Great, necessary concept. Redundant in some small ways and perhaps repetitive for seasoned Christians

John Piper makes an excellent case for why we are to delight in the Lord and find our pure joy in Christ. This book is needed for anyone who's struggling to love God more closely. I appreciated the many biblical references this book gave as well as its sound theology. Listening to it in a three-week span; it went by quick and I was able to notice that the second half of the book seems to be longer than necessary. In the beginning of the book he's already made the case for why we should pursue our joy in God. The remaining chapters describe how we should apply that to things in our lives such as marriage, money, missions, and prayer. In my opinion after the prayer chapter the points made in the remainder of the book could have been much shorter and much quicker. For where I'm at the remaining parts of the book beyond that were redundant. Nonetheless, this is a needed book for anybody who disciples, counsels, or needs encouragement in their walk with the glorious Lord.
