While I'm sure older kids would totally enjoy this, the adventures of Lillian are so captivating that anyone with a beating heart will love them. I started with the audio version, and let me tell you it's difficult to maintain one's macho standing when you're openly weeping while mowing the lawn. If I could give this six stars I would, and I suspect anyone reading this review will, too. (time passes) I wrote the above when I was about halfway through the story, and now that I've finished it I realized I didn't praise this book enough. Every time I turned it on I was run through such a spectrum of emotions from elation to despair to hope to terror to serenity and finally to joy, and never once did I feel manipulated or forced into these feelings. And as I saw that I was approaching the end I kept trying to will that counter to start going backward, but alas, all good things, eh. This was truly a joyful noise in my ears, and I encourage anyone who loves a rollicking good story told with love and passion to pick up this book.

This is a fine overview of the early days of space flight up to the end of the Apollo missions, but unless you already know a lot of the details this book seems to gloss over quite a bit, while being painstakingly detailed in other areas. Some people have complained that the book was read by an English performer, but given that the author is also English I don't see this as an issue. My main complaint is, probably, with the editing. There are practically no pauses between sections of the book, so it is difficult to tell sometimes when the perspective shifts say from the US to Russia, but this was a fairly minor annoyance and did not significantly detract from my enjoyment of the story. Overall I enjoyed Apollo 11, but I'd encourage newcomers to this bit of history to listen to a more comprehensive account or two before picking this one up.

This book gives some great back-story for the characters in Star Trek: Discovery, but could have benefitted from some prodigious editing. The beginning and end are fast paced and interesting, but the book really bogs down in the middle. The author also seems to forget that we know that the characters in mortal danger cannot die, since this is a prequel, and spends too much time focused on their peril. There is also a sub-plot involving the planetary governor that could have been totally excised without harming the story at all. The performance by Susan Eisenberg is adequate, but she brings no life to the characters, unlike most other readers I've heard. She simply reads the book. If this were either not a Star Trek story, or at the least not a prequel, it would have held up better, but as it is if you are a fan of Discovery, and want to know more about Burnham, I recommend this. If not, skip it.
