Historia
Katniss Everdeen, girl on fire, has survived, even though her home has been destroyed. Peeta has been captured by the Capitol. District 13 really does exist. There are rebels. There are new leaders. A revolution is unfolding. It is by design that Katniss was rescued from the arena in the cruel and haunting Quarter Quell, and it is by design that she has long been part of the revolution without knowing it. District 13 has come out of the shadows and is plotting to overthrow the Capitol. Everyone, it seems, has had a hand in the carefully laid plans - except Katniss.

Great book, alright narrating. The singing was probably the most awkward thing I've heard in my life tho.

Historia
Investigative journalist Laura Chambers is back in her tiny hometown of Hillsborough, North Carolina, the one place she swore never to return. Fired from The Boston Globe, her career in shambles, she reluctantly takes a job with the local paper. The work is simple, unimportant, and worst of all, boring - at least until a missing girl turns up dead, the body impeccably clean, dressed to be the picture of innocence. Years earlier, 10-year-old Patty Finch left home and never made it back. But for the people of Hillsborough, Patty was just the beginning.

the story was cliche, the characters unlikeable, and the narrator awful. I'd look for something else.

Two Truths and a Lie. The girls played it all the time in their cabin at Camp Nightingale. Vivian, Natalie, Allison, and first-time camper Emma Davis, the youngest of the group. But the games ended the night Emma sleepily watched the others sneak out of the cabin into the darkness. The last she - or anyone - saw of them was Vivian closing the cabin door behind her, hushing Emma with a finger pressed to her lips. Now a rising star in the NYC art scene, Emma's paintings catch the attention of Francesca Harris-White, the socialite and wealthy owner of the very same Camp Nightingale.

Brilliant
Revisado: 03-28-23
This was so damn close to being a one star review for me. I honestly felt cheated when it was said to all have been a freak accident in the past and that the twist that had been building the whole story wouldn't come. BUT THEN, in the LAST FIVE MINUTES there is a complete new twist, and this one is breathtaking. I don't even mind that so many other things didn't make a lot of sense to me, because this, THIS, is how you do a twist. Absolutely brilliant.

Nothing exciting whatsoever
Revisado: 07-01-22
I usually enjoy this author's work, but this book was a disappointment. Nothing really happened in it, the characters were unrealistic and the "twist" fell extremely flat. There were also several questions left unanswered, like the author ran out of time and decided to end it way sooner than it should have. Pick another book, this author can and has done way better.

The ending ruined it
Revisado: 01-19-22
Was the story good? Up to a point. Was it believable? Not even a little bit. The narrative was amazing and in the beginning I really enjoyed the mix of narrated chapters and the played out audio parts, until I realised they were just a way for the author to loophole her way out of letting us know what the main character had figured out. Suddenly in the climax we find out details Charlie had noticed about the character behind the so called twist, which were supposed to make it feel like all pieces fell in place but instead made for a moment of eye rolling. If the only way you can write a twist is to withhold information, you're not doing it right.
The ending was so over the top it made me physically cringe and I could barely finish the last chapter because it was just so. bad. Everything magically worked out for everyone, in the least realistic way possible.
So why two stars? Because of the narrator. She was amazing. The book, however, wasn't.

Great narrative, predictable story
Revisado: 01-13-22
How does this have so many 4 and 5 star reviews? The story was slow, with the same things repeated over and over, and the twist was so obvious I actually rolled my eyes when it was revealed. I gave it two stars because I kind of liked the characters and it wasn't so awful I felt like it had completely wasted my time, though I could surely have done something better with it.
There are plenty of brilliant books out there, but this wasn't one of them. You can do better.
(The narrator did a great job, though.)

Not worth it
Revisado: 11-27-21
For 8 hours or so, I absolutely loved this. I love what others would see as fillers and I fully enjoyed the slow pace with not a lot of action, thinking you get closer to finishing the puzzle piece by piece. Then, during the last 40 minutes, the whole book is ruined. The supposed to be big reveal is terribly executed and makes no sense at all, and the only thing it did was confuse the hell out of me. You can't just turn it all around, make your readers realise that they've basically been lied to through the whole book, and call it a twist. A twist is meant to make you feel like everything just makes sense, that all of the pieces are now coming together perfectly, not make you stop for a moment and wonder what the hell you've missed.
It gets two stars because until those last minutes, I truly enjoyed the book, but no one should be allowed to string their readers along for hours just to let them know that nothing they've learned through the book matters, because it has nothing to do with the final revelation anyway.
Save your time and your money, this one isn't worth it.

Brilliant
Revisado: 08-13-21
This is by far the best book I've read this year, with twists and turns that kept me on the edge of my seat through the whole thing and with the final realisation of it all so perfect, I had to stop for a moment to catch my breath. I almost always see the twist coming, few books can surprise me nowadays, but this one left me wondering until the very moment when all the pieces suddenly fit together and it was so stunning I had to remind myself to breathe.
So why four stars and not five?
Because of the very last chapter. After the mystery was solved and justice had been made, the final chapter was too cliché and just... kind of cringe. I still recommend reading it because it truly was the best damn book I've read in ages, but I wish the author had simply skipped the final chapter, because it felt completely out of place and didn't fit in with the rest of the story.
However, if you get the chance to read this one, do it. You won't regret it.

The Perry family's new house is perfect - except for the weird behavior of the neighbors, and that odd smell coming from a dark corner in the basement. Pity no one warned the family about the house. Now it's too late. Because the darkness at the bottom of the basement stairs is rising.

Terribly, terribly bad
Revisado: 03-19-21
When you write a story about haunted places you need to be careful to not overdo it. what makes a ghost story scary is the way you can relate to it, how it's something almost normal but still something that doesn't really fit in. Things that aren't strange enough to tell people without them wondering if you've lost your mind, but still not so ordinary you can't fully believe something odd isn't happening. When you start adding random faces in toilets and men with tentacles slipping under a girl's blanket, you've just made it ridiculous rather than scary.
It started off intriguing enough with creepy text messages and things being found where the house members knew they hadn't left them, then it turned into some crazy story about sex addicted ghosts and... yeah I don't even know, I couldn't read it to the end. I rarely give up on books, but this was so bad I simply couldn't keep wasting time on it.

A disappointment
Revisado: 07-14-20
I usually love anything by K.L. Slater and never thought I'd be disappointed by a book by her, but this one simply felt illogical. The main character felt plain stupid for staying for as long as she did and the so called twist in the end wasn't surprising at all. The "villain" was predicable from early on and the whole story felt unbelievable. I will continue to read this author's work because I've never been disappointed before, but I wouldn't recommend anyone to waste their time or money on this one.
