Historia
Somewhere out beyond the edge of the universe there is a library that contains an infinite number of books, each one the story of another reality. One tells the story of your life as it is, along with another book for the other life you could have lived if you had made a different choice at any point in your life. While we all wonder how our lives might have been, what if you had the chance to go to the library and see for yourself? Would any of these other lives truly be better? In The Midnight Library, Nora Seed finds herself faced with this decision.

Historia
In a world as rich and real as our own, Richard Rahl and Kahlan Amnell stand against the ancient forces which besiege the New World - forces so terrible that when last they threatened, they could only be withstood by sealing off the Old World from whence they came. Now the barrier has been breached, and the New World is again beset by their evil power.

Historia
Americans have built an empire on the idea of “race”, a falsehood that damages us all but falls most heavily on the bodies of Black women and men - bodies exploited through slavery and segregation and, today, threatened, locked up, and murdered out of all proportion. What is it like to inhabit a Black body and find a way to live within it? And how can we all honestly reckon with this fraught history and free ourselves from its burden? Between the World and Me is Ta-Nehisi Coates’ attempt to answer these questions in a letter to his adolescent son.

Historia
In a world of self-driving cars and big data, smart algorithms and Siri, we know that artificial intelligence is getting smarter every day. Though all these nifty devices and programs might make our lives easier, they're also well on their way to making "good" jobs obsolete. A computer winning Jeopardy might seem like a trivial, if impressive, feat, but the same technology is making paralegals redundant as it undertakes electronic discovery, and is soon to do the same for radiologists.

As a teacher in cooperative education as well as in MBA level curriculum, I will say that this book is spot on. I also serve as an Information Security Officer for a large community college. As such, I sort of have a front row seat watching the interplay of the themes between jobs, companies that hire workers, what they look for, and the challenges the businesses face. This book largely echoes the events unfolding in real time.
I think this book does a wonderful job of exposing what those of us who write software always knew: We are digging the very graves in which we will lie. Capitalism has always had this fatal flaw imo.
As for higher Ed, I will say I agree with many of the ideas put forth. With student loan debt at 1.2trillion dollars and rising, impoverishing the next generation of workers to compete for scarce good paying jobs will be our undoing. Make no mistake...higher Ed is in for a reckoning and technology will contribute mightily to this. The moment that hiring managers accept alternative credentials in lieu of college degrees, the house of cards will come down.

Historia
The folks in Mike Erikson's small New England town would say he's just your average, everyday guy. And that's exactly how Mike likes it. Sure, the life he's chosen isn't much of a challenge to someone with his unique gifts, but he's content with his quiet and peaceful existence. That is, until an old friend presents him with an irresistible mystery, one that Mike is uniquely qualified to solve.
