Great characterization of the people and the times at the close of the 19th century

I like how Austin brings her characters around to understand God‘s will and purpose for their lives, despite the societal constructs of the times. She does this without hitting you over the head with religion, but softly touches your heart, nonetheless. From her women, we can learn something about God’s mysterious providence in the lives of a Christian, and perhaps be encouraged to stand against the cultural leanings of our day.

Riveting story

Anyone who has ever questioned the goodness and faithfulness of the Almighty will connect with the characters in this story, who make authentic history come alive. I have read all of the Lynn Austin books, and this one ranks high on the list.

Great Historical Novel

I could not stop listening, which is rare for me. The characterizations were exquisite, and I grew to identify with each girl/woman. The readers did an excellent job of portraying each one as they told their stories from their different perspectives and wove them together into one great tapestry. Thanks, Serena Burdick for a wonderfully entertaining, yet heart wrenching, read.

Excellent all around

I have listened to everything Lynn Austin has written. This was one of the most enjoyable reads. I had been waiting expectantly for the next book, and I was afraid after her trip to Israel that Mrs. Austin’s life might go in a different direction; one that wouldn’t include writing historical fiction. The English accent of the reader was so appropriate and delightful. God’s character concerning forgiveness climaxed in the words of Mrs. Vandenberg toward the end, and the portrayal of true friendship came through loud and clear throughout the book. Austin must continue to use her God-given gift.

Not really to my taste

This was one of my least favorite books simply because it seemed too much like a Hallmark movie. I like a little more intrigue. It was so predictable and simple. However, the author’s motivation to bring out the spiritual/psychological theme was well received.

the style was difference between than the other Lynn Austin Books in that each character had a separate story. I liked the book a lot, but I believe the readers voice was a little old for the main character.

I loved this book. As usual, Austin tied up all the loose ends. But more than any of her other books I've read, she kept me smiling. The reader did a superb job. Delightful!

facinating and heart-warming story
