Having found this book through a talk on philosophy, I did not expect so much representation of thought and standard laid out by the squeaky wheel that is Evangelical commercialism found in the United States.
The assertion that evangelical industrial complex’s definition of sexual morality that has been forefront since the second world war ended, is the standardbearer for faithfulness to God, was a disappointment. By limiting a relationship to God to this particular vein of Christianity, a huge chunk of those who profess valuable relationship with God have been left out of the equation.
Although the final chapters of this book, R, a more honest evaluation of spirituality overall, sifting through the statistics and dogmatic representations of a single line of protestant theology was an undesirable process for this listener.

The last chapter is worth the whole book & it’s okay to skip to the end. But… This book will not be a waste of time and brain space to take in even if you’re not an alcoholic or even in relationship with someone who struggles with alcoholism. Rohr fleshes out the steps in a way that point us to our own struggles and releases the stigma associated with those prone to drink by making us all a little more human. In doing so, the good Franciscan brings us a little closer to the divine.

Rachel Held Evans would likely refuse the title “prophetess,” thinking that she always had somewhere to improve. However she gives the answer to why her byline should carry it in the pages of this book. She points out that a prophet is simply a teller of truths and that is what she does in this book. She brings the truth about herself, the truth about the American church, the truth about history and the truth that faithful Christians disagree, yet are no less faithful. With her open, truthful words, she brings story that connects us and also leaves space for us to write a bit in the margins.

McKnight delivers an excellent study into not only the leadership of Paul contained in his writings but the example that shone through humbly relating to those he shepherded.

Although a bit dated, this is a decent representation of turn of events. The author meanders a bit but in some of the better sections lays out the history of specific cultural, religious, and political ideology in a way that... eventually... points out the effects we see today. However, keep in mind that statistics from ages past are according to those keeping the records and while the author conveys that the US had a literacy level of 95% at or near it’s founding, that number most likely does not include indigenous peoples, nor the slave population, and maybe not even women.
