Why we think it’s a great listen: A masterpiece like none other, Brooks’ powerful performance of Haley’s words has been known to leave listeners in tears. It begins with a birth in an African village in 1750, and ends two centuries later at a funeral in Arkansas. And in that time span, an unforgettable cast of men, women, and children come to life, many of them based on the people from Alex Haley's own family tree.

I thought this was a great book! I have been familiar with the story from the TV series but had never watched the whole series or read the book until now.
All I can say is that this is both a sobering and inspiring story!

Historia
The holidays are upon us, and this year Audible is very happy to present to our members one of Charles Dickens’ most popular Christmas stories, The Cricket on the Hearth. This holiday classic (original subtitle: “A Fairy Tale of Home”) tells the innocent, picturesque, and charming story of a poor family and their would-be guardian angel; in short, a delightful vision of Victorian Christmas. As always, a great story calls for a great voice, so we’ve brought in legendary actor and record-breaking Audie and Grammy award-winning narrator Jim Dale (The Night Circus). Happy holidays and happy listening!

Pretty Good Listen
Revisado: 12-23-13
I enjoyed this story quite a bit. The more I read Dickens' work the more I appreciate it.
The story had some good messages but they aren't as powerfully conveyed as some of his other books in my opinion.

Can't give this a great review but it was helpful
Revisado: 11-30-13
I have to say that this book was useful in my study fro the GRE. I must have listened to it 15 times (at 3x speed, which is pretty easy to do since normal speed is pretty slow).
There are a couple things that bothered me quite a bit:
1 - Pronunciation, a few words probably at least 10-15 (out of 650 or so) to my ear were mis-pronounced during recording. I understand that these are not the easiest words to pronounce but if you are recording a book you should probably make sure you are pronouncing the words properly. Two specific examples that were driving me crazy:
Facetious was pronounced Facetous, it took me a while to figure that out
Exacerbate was pronounced Exasperate.... that one really got me
There were plenty of others (and possibly some I didn't catch)
2 - Sloppy Production - at least one word and possible more were repeated, i presume this was due to sloppy editing. Also, there were some spelling sections that I believe were skipping some letters (again some kind of recording/editing issue?).
I could probably go on a bit longer. However the bottom line is that I thought this was a valuable book. It did help me with studying. I just wish they could take a little more pride in their product and look more and some of the details.

A meld of history and science, this book is a group portrait of some of the greatest minds who ever lived as they wrestled with natures most sweeping mysteries. The answers they uncovered still hold the key to how we understand the world.

Enjoyable Read
Revisado: 11-15-11
I am happy that I got this book. It gave an enjoyable account of some of the most influential scientific discoveries in the 17th century. It didn't get too technical, and so was easy to listen to without getting lost.
While I was vaguely familiar with many of the accounts of these discoveries, it was enlightening to hear pieces of journal entries or letters that describe the events first-hand.

Historia
In a scrap heap within an abandoned factory, the greatest invention in history lies dormant and unused. By what fatal error of judgment has its value gone unrecognized, its brilliant inventor punished rather than rewarded for his efforts? In defense of those greatest of human qualities that have made civilization possible, one man sets out to show what would happen to the world if all the heroes of innovation and industry went on strike.

Very interesting story
Revisado: 11-11-11
I thought that this was a very good book, however I got a bit tired near the end. I think the ~3.5 hour speech may have been my tipping point.
However, I must say that since I have finished the book I can't help but use its ideas in my day-to-day life. It has definitely affected my outlook on economy and politics. Very influential!

The Overlords appeared suddenly over every city - intellectually, technologically, and militarily superior to humankind. Benevolent, they made few demands: unify earth, eliminate poverty, and end war. With little rebellion, humankind agreed, and a golden age began.

Great Book!
Revisado: 09-16-11
What a great book!
I got this because it was on sale. Little did I know how pleased I would be with it. The story is so original that it leaves you guessing the whole time. This is a great thought experiment regarding evolution, the human race and the existence of other more advanced races.
I loved it!
