Unpredictable and Enjoyable
Revisado: 03-29-25
Most of the time you can anticipate what’s going to happen. Not here. I was constantly surprised by what happened next. The context of the story is family relationships. But the family is from India. In that regard it did feel a little stereotypical. But I’m not from India and I very much enjoyed this story… although it is not very realistic. You have to let go and simply enjoy, despite the lack of realism.

This book is like a Hallmark movie with a satisfying sex scene. Great performances. Easy to listen to. But a bit predictable.

Historia
The Founding Fathers tried to protect us from the threat they knew, the tyranny that overcame ancient democracy. Today, our political order faces new threats, not unlike the totalitarianism of the twentieth century. We are no wiser than the Europeans who saw democracy yield to fascism, Nazism, or communism. Our one advantage is that we might learn from their experience.

Insightful
Revisado: 12-28-24
No wasted text. Concise explanations of the situations facing us. Sadly, I don’t think Americans care this insightful message. For most White Americans, tyranny is preferable over democracy where power is shared with the previously oppressed minorities

Gabby Leggett left her Boston family with big dreams of making it big as a model/actress in Hollywood. Two years later, she disappears from her apartment. Her family, former boyfriend, friends - and the police - have no idea where she is and no leads. Leggett's mother hires Spenser to find her, with help of his former apprentice, Zebulon Sixkill, now an LA private eye. Spenser barely has time to unpack before the trail leads to a powerful movie studio boss, the Armenian mob, and a shadowy empowerment group some say might be a dangerous cult.

Above Average
Revisado: 07-28-24
This story was not as engaging. The role of the Indian apprentice should have been enhanced. And Susan’s behavior seemed really out of character. Still, it was not bad. Overall above average.

Terrific Performance
Revisado: 06-29-24
Very consistent with the earlier books. But the last two books have been more difficult to keep track of the characters. I was amazed how the reader was able to separate all the characters. Excellent story. I particularly loved the ending!

Great Performance/Convoluted Story
Revisado: 04-17-24
I really enjoyed this book. But it was not as good as the third one in the series. The beginning was great because it picked up where the third ended. The story that developed was infinitely more complicated and a bit confusing for me. It was all saved by the fantastic reading performance.

Historia
When Robin Ellacott opens an unexpected delivery, she is horrified to discover that it contains a woman's severed leg. Her boss, private detective Cormoran Strike, is less surprised but just as alarmed. He suspects that four people from his past could be responsible - and any one of them is capable of sustained and unspeakable brutality. With the police focusing on the one suspect Strike has essentially ruled out, he and Robin take matters into their own hands and delve into the dark and twisted worlds of the other three men.

Fantastic!
Revisado: 09-29-21
This was a wonderful book. Such an inspiring story. It’s a true story, which makes it both heart warming and gut wrenching at the same time. It’s an excellent reminder of the strength and resilience of African descendants.
The details are so genuine. It is a “page turner.” I couldn’t stop listening. And the narration is outstanding. I don’t think I would have enjoyed this story as much if I were reading it myself. The names of all the tribes and other details would have been more difficult to keep track of.
I highly recommend When We’re Home in Africa! I thank Themba Umbalisi for sharing this fantastic story.

Revisado: 09-03-19
This book gives a very clear and accurate description of racism. I can give witness that the issues reviewed were either generally consistent or exactly the same as my life experience. It’s definitely well presented.
And the narration by Bahni Turpin is truly outstanding.
